Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

I was promised a recession.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

He really is that stupid.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Bark louder, little dog.

I’m not going to embed a Tucker Carlson YouTube, but here’s a link. Basically, Tucker’s interviewing a former member of the New York Sheriff’s Department and a former Corrections Warden, Ed Gavin, who says some sensible things about Floyd’s murder, and Tucker mocks him by laughing while simultaneously shitting himself in a hurry to get Gavin off of his show.

What Tucker’s bookers didn’t understand is that the NY Sheriff’s Department is a force of 150 that does mostly civil enforcement. They’ve been key in shutting down bars and clubs that weren’t following New York COVID rules. I’ll bet they thought Gavin was NYPD.

Tucker doesn’t convey typical human expression in proportional response to the situation before him. I have seen several clips where one of his “friendly” guests makes a “trigger the libs” type joke (admittedly often very dumb), and rather than chuckle along, or even crack a smile, Tucker’s face just stays dumbfounded, as if his neurons are still processing the literal meaning of the words.

TBH, most of these guys–Hannity, Shapiro, etc.–rarely smile or laugh on camera, even when it would be appropriate to do so. It’s really strange. There is a segment out on YouTube where Bill O’Reilly had Jon Stewart on, and Stewart was absolutely killing it. You could hear the production crew on the set busting up hysterically. O’Reilly just sat there stone faced.

A lot of political stories came out of the November 2018 elections. One out of North Carolina:  African-American Sheriffs were elected in four counties never before having had a Black Sheriff. A couple of the counties were among the most populous in the state.

I never followed this story up to see how it’s gone for these trailbreakers. It would be easy enough to, though, as Sheriffs tend to be in local and state news a lot. I guess they will be up for reelection next year.

O’Reilly was a polite white supremacist, though, the kind John Stewart could be friends with, who phrased things in less hateful terms. “This is the end of the White Establishment in America” for example, when Obama won reelection.
EDIT – No, I will never, ever forgive John Stewart for using his interview with Barack Obama to blame Obama for the partisan tone in Washington and declare Senate gridlock proof that Obama failed to bring ‘change’. It was the only thing Stewart would talk about. People talk here about revealing character – well, Stewart revealed his character, and it was ugly.

I don’t know if this has appeared in another thread already. Merrick Garland was on television this morning announcing that DOJ would launch an investigation into the practices of the Minneapolis police force. This is separate from its investigation into the Floyd case. It can be read as an announcement that the department is back in the business of investigating systemic police misconduct. That was deliberately stopped under Trump, but many of the Obama-era lawyers who worked on those investigations will reportedly be back, starting with Vanita Gupta, who should be confirmed today.

@germy: she really let him have it – GOOD

State GQPs are going nuts not just with voter suppression but protest suppression/criminalization of free speech/immunity for those who might want to run over Black people:

How the GOP is Creating Harsher Penalties for Protestors

Republican legislators in Oklahoma and Iowa have passed bills granting immunity to drivers whose vehicles strike and injure protesters in public streets.
A Republican proposal in Indiana would bar anyone convicted of unlawful assembly from holding state employment, including elected office. A Minnesota bill would prohibit those convicted of unlawful protesting from receiving student loans, unemployment benefits or housing assistance.
And in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed sweeping legislation this week that toughened existing laws governing public disorder and created a harsh new level of infractions — a bill he’s called “the strongest anti-looting, anti-rioting, pro-law-enforcement piece of legislation in the country.”
The Florida law imposes harsher penalties for existing public disorder crimes, turning misdemeanor offenses into felonies, creating new felony offenses and preventing defendants from being released on bail until they have appeared before a judge. A survey conducted in January by Ryan D. Tyson, a Republican pollster, found broad support in the state for harsher penalties against protesters “who damage personal and business property or assault law enforcement.”

But [these laws go] farther. If a local government chooses to decrease its law enforcement budget — to “defund the police,” as Mr. DeSantis put it — the measure provides a new mechanism for a prosecutor or a city or county commissioner to appeal the reduction to the state.

I got sick of him long, long, long before his stupid rally. And then he sat out the four years when the country really had a need for as many “truth tellers” (what he always was claiming to be) as we could possibly get.
I will never watch another tv show with him on it again and am relieved I haven’t seen his smug self-satisfied face for many years now and hope to never have to.

@zhena gogolia: The other weird part of that story is Tucker looks exactly the same as an adult as he did as a teen. That’s not normal. This dude has some development issues going on?

Somewhat related…what are y’all’s thoughts on the Columbus death of Ma’khia Bryant?  I basically never give cops the benefit of the doubt and teens certain can act irrationally.  And her death is tragic.  But they seem to have released the full body cam footage and if she did, indeed, have a knife in her hand, it’s very hard to say the cop was 100% wrong.  It’s extremely tragic and sad but, again, if there was a knife, do you let the wielder stab the person right in front of her or do you do something about it?

I don’t want a tragic, sad yet maybe justifiable scenario to muddy the waters by pairing it with the many other incidents – many in just the last month or so – where it was 100% clear that what the cops did was wrong, wrong, wrong.

Tucker’s yearbook lists “Dan White Society” but also – and, I think, more revolting, the Jesse Helms Foundation. Here are a few “notable quotes” of Helms.

@OGLiberal: What we seem to be lacking among our various police forces all over the country, is enough officers who encounter situations like this and if he/she elects to use a gun, why not shoot a person like that in an arm holding the knife or a leg? But, recent evidence indicates that we’ve lots of easily panicked police men and women,

    @dww44:

they are only panicked when it’s a Black person. A White person can do anything pretty much, include attack them, and they don’t get panicked.

why not shoot a person like that in an arm holding the knife or a leg?

That’s really not easy. even if they’re just feet away. And in this case, the woman being attacked is behind the attacker. Which means even if you hit an arm or leg most likely it goes thru and hits her, or it ricochets and hits someone else.

The problem is that the police are being issued hollow point ammo which expands as it goes thru the body causing terrible damage. Ball ammo, which the military uses (because the idea is to cause wounds that require others to give medical treatment, taking them out of the fight also) should be issued. But in this case, again the attackee is behind the attacker, there’s no good options here.

Tucker’s HS yearbook shows that he was a racist homophobe clear back in High School, and is only more so now as a 51 year old adult. I’m not sure why he would be reluctant to have that come out, as he is obviously both a racist and a homophobe on national cable TV every day.

It would make it hard to run for office in many places, though. I would hope.

Tucker Carlson’s take on the Chauvin guilty verdict, in a Fox opinion column he wrote, amounted to:

    1. But…but what about all those previous riots by BLM supporters?
    2. Can we trust a jury verdict when the jury was subject to an atmosphere of intimidation when they were aware of the riots that would break out if they voted to acquit?

Carlson of course makes no mention that the jury was likely very strongly influenced by clear video of Chauvin suffocating the life out of a subdued, nonresistant Floyd.

“Let’s face it: what we saw in that video was pure savagery … That was clearly an excessive, unjustified use of force … I think the verdict was just … It was an open-and-shut case.”

I couldn’t have said it better.

I would love to be a fly on the wall at Tucker’s next Klavern meetup. Should be spirited.

@dww44: I think it’s a combination of panic and training – I don’t think they are trained to “wing” somebody…I think they only thing they are trained to do when they pull the trigger is kill somebody.

And while what he did may be “justified” in the legal sense of the word, have to think he wouldn’t have been so quick to shoot a white teen girl in a white neighborhood, despite the “shoot to kill” training.
