The rest of the family gets their second dose today (one Pfizer and one gets Moderna.)
In the modeling that allows 9-15 weeks between shots, they make a critical assumption; that protection levels do not wain during that time AND the final result (after waiting) creates the same level of protection. So, there might be a big down side to this approach (which they say in the paper.)
India is a disaster that will only get far worse. I wish there was anything that could be done by the US but there isn’t. Tragic is an understatement.

@OzarkHillbilly: Yes, and why the UK as well? We may not be doing as well as Israel but our figures are still quite low. Could it be the Biden admin. is trying to save potential American visitors blushes by saying you can’t go there, rather than waiting for the country in question to say we don’t want you/will only let you in if you quarantine for 10 days?
Anyway, here are Wednesday’s numbers from the UK where we had 2396 new cases, which is a decrease in the rolling 7-day average of 9.4%. New cases by nation,
England – 1943 (down 226)
Northern Ireland – 116 (down 8)
Scotland – 273 (up 95)
Wales – 64 (up 11).
Deaths – There were 22 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease in the rolling 7-day average of 28.2%. New deaths by nation, England – 20, Northern ireland – 1, Scotland – 1 and none in Wales.
Testing – There were 730,210 tests conducted on Tuesday, 20 April. This is an increase in the rolling 7-day average of 14.9%. The PCR testing capacity estimated by the labs on that date was 659,009.
Hospitalisations – The number of people in hospital on Monday, 19 April was 2004 and the number on ventilators as of Tuesday, 20th was 300. The 7-day rolling average for hospital admissions as of 14 April was down by 13.4%.
Vaccinations – As of 20 April, a total of 33,139,742 people had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 10,775,817 had received both. In percentage terms, 62.9% of all adults in the UK had received 1 shot and 20.5% were fully vaccinated as of that date.

Because no matter how much we hate it, getting at least a portion of those people to get vaccinated is important to the country as a whole. I think some of them will quietly do it once it becomes as easy as going to the pharmacy at CVS. I think we should quit begging them to get vaccinated, and instead say a version of “Well I’m protected, so if you want to take a chance at dying I guess that’s your right” or “OK, all the liberals are protected now, so if you want all the conservatives to die off I guess that’s OK with me!”. I think the more they think they’re “owning” us by not getting vaccinated, the more they hold out.

Ugh, I heard the “hospitals get $20,000 every time they say someone dies from Covid” myth again last night. He said his daughter is a health care worker at a hospital, and she told him that. Unless she works in billing, how would she even know that? These people are convinced that Covid patients are a huge profit center for hospitals, so they are lying and saying everyone had it when they didn’t. Next time I’m going to ask if they’ve ever dealt with a health insurance company or Medicare before, because they definitely don’t look kindly on you lying about things like that. It’s a myth that just won’t die – I’ve been hearing it from people since last April!

@rikyrah: Well, it’s city government in a 65% TFG-supporting area, so I don’t look for them to do that even though I wish they would. The reason the effect is so small is Chipotle is already paying 12-13 (average) for hourly employees.
The “minimum wage” (essentially) already went up, where “minimum” is the wage where they can get employees.

@Mary G: Oh, absolutely. A broken arm is an annoyance for weeks, this will be 2 days maybe. No big.
I’m really glad that we seem to be recognizing that we fucked up over the holidays. it was nice running around yesterday morning and seeing zero unmasked people, even outside.

@Kay: Minimum wage for Chipotle in my city is $19/hr right now. They are still in business. Curiously they moved their HQ from Denver to Newport Beach a few years ago. $127K median household income and median home price of $2.4M (good luck to anyone trying to square those two numbers).
So much for ‘we can’t afford to pay’ and ‘CA high taxes will drive out business’.
Kay
It’s just so funny to look back at the “minimum wage debate” from 2008-2012 “hamburger flippers making 12 dollars an hour! Outrage! Societal collapse! Replace them all with robots!”
Then that wage increase happened anyway and very few people even noticed :)

I’ve just received my appointment details for my second jab of AstraZeneca here in Scotland. All vaccine distribution and administration is being dealt with by Public Health Scotland, there’s no drop-in schemes or similar so it’s a question of waiting until they get round to you based on a priority scheme.
I’m booked in for next Wednesday, 28th April. That’s 11 weeks and a day after my first inoculation and just within the promised 12-week maximum delay between inoculations approved by the joint vaccination group (JCVI) overseeing the vaccine rollout for the four national health services. I’ve not seen any studies or other analyses to indicate whether the extended delay, meant to take the load off the healthcare sector during the early part of this year when the case numbers were increasing and hospitals were filling up, has actually been a problem or not. It’s notable that the UK generally has seen a significant fall in cases, hospitalisations etc. over the past couple of months as the vaccination program gathered pace although we have been in limited lockdown for that time as well.
Assuming the numbers provided are correct there doesn’t seem to be any real amount of vaccine hesitancy here in Scotland — the age cohort of people aged 70 through 79 is reported as having more than 100% takeup of the first dose at the moment, for example. This seems to be an artefact of imprecise population estimates of how many people are actually in this age group, an undercount perhaps but it’s still indicative of high levels of acceptance of the vaccine. Younger people might be more hesitant, this is still to be discovered.

That’s happening here too due to a shortage of workers. Amazon is building a huge warehouse about 10 miles south of here. Bass Pro raised their starting wage to $15.50/hr. I saw a table in WalMart asking for applicants advertising $14.50/hr starting wage. We may get to a $15/hr “minimum wage” without ever raising the federal legal minimum.
The worker shortage is real. I’m hoping that as vaccines become more easily available and more people get vaccinated, and as kids are able to go back to school, more and more people will come back into the workforce because it’ll feel safe for them to do so.

@Soprano2: Where does that crap get started? My mom died of COVID last month–six days from diagnosis to death. Up until her diagnosis, she was in good health and living independently in the St. Louis area. Admitted to ER with classic COVID symptoms, tested positive immediately. We had a hell of a time getting the hospital to ADD COVID to her death certificate. They wanted to say simply that she died of cardiac arrest, which I pointed out, we all die when our heart stops. The reason hers stopped was her SpO2 was under 50% for more than 24 hours. They put it as a third factor in her death, after much agita.
My brother, a fan of TFG, could not explain that one after assuring me that the hospitals got Bonus Bucks for reporting COVID. Here I would say it’s more like they get Bonus Bucks for suppressing numbers.

@matryoshka: I researched it a little bit and couldn’t figure it out either. Best as I can tell, there was money in the CARES Act to increase Medicare payouts to hospitals for Covid patients, I think partly due to the fact that Covid patients crowded out every other hospital patient; I think that got turned into “hospitals get $xxxx every time they diagnose someone as having Covid, so they’re saying everyone has Covid”. It’s like none of these people have ever dealt with an insurance company or Medicare! I agree, when you ask them “who’s paying that” they say “the government”, but they can’t tell you what part of the government. It’s just a conspiracy theory that makes them able to claim that Covid isn’t as bad as everyone says because of course all the hospitals are lying to make money. They always cite that mistake with the guy who died in a motorcycle accident, as if that’s happening everywhere. These people also don’t know that there is often more than one cause of death on a death certificate; my husband’s father had about five “causes of death” on his.
I’m sorry for your loss, that’s terrible.

All of them, KT?

That actually makes more sense.

@matryoshka: That happened to a friend of mine when her husband, a paraplegic from a car accident, was sent to the hospital for a medical emergency. He came back from the hospital and developed a high fever and dry cough. Back to the hospital and died days later. The Florida medical examiner refused to test his body or attribute his death to COVID. She wasn’t in good enough emotional shape to appeal.

Okay update at work.
Just got off the Info desk at the library, feeling very lightheaded. It *awas* busy this morning. Serious need to take a nap in my office, but I gotta——– whump

The government is gradually returning to a functional state in which State Department advisories reflect CDC evaluations.
This is not a response to changing conditions, only a belated return to normal standards.
Changes going forward should reflect new information.

@Baud: Maybe we need to buy them a nice dinner, take them to a show, then some soft music and candle light?

@L85NJGT: Speaking as someone in medical manufacturing, the FDA gives the companies plenty of warning to get back into regulatory compliance.

My reaction on hearing “don’t bully people who are vaccine holdouts” is maybe they haven’t been bullied enough.
I’ve become meaner. Maybe this is related to the fact several acquaintances of mine have died or become seriously ill from covid-19.
The latest: My cousin was on social media putting out an APB for her uncle who is hospitalized with covid in India. They are trying to transfer him from the hospital in Banaras to another hospital that has oxygen cylinders.

Vaccine update: Hubby and I got our first shot of Moderna yesterday at the Costco pharmacy. While there, our second appointment was made, so that was good. Today my arm is very sore and his arm is somewhat sore. Looking forward to becoming a 5G hotspot.

@rikyrah: Until companies (esp. retail) are willing to tell CUSTOMERS “no vaccine, no service”, I don’t see how they can make employees get the shot. I’m continually amazed at how many of my fellow grocery employees are resistant.

Heh, something akin to absurdity sprinkled generously with overboiling rage.

Such idiots. It’s only the RWNJs trying to reduce COVID-19 to something less so it can be dismissed with a wave of their jaundiced hands.
