Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

This fight is for everything.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

I really should read my own blog.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Today, you hand-delivered a message to essential workers who had to clean up your crap – a message of supremacy in action on #EarthDay which is supposed to center indigenous people and essential workers. Your performance is what’s bullshit. You owe those workers an apology. https://t.co/vO0bdHhinD

— Christine Pelosi (@sfpelosi) April 23, 2021

Self-righteous white people parading with their matching pink wheelbarrows, for a much-photographed stunt that will be blamed on ‘Democrats’. Thanks for nothing, jagoffs!

oh, the poop leftists were extinction rebellion? the anti semitic group that also cost jeremy corbyn in the UK? lol.

I guess they were attempting another hunger strike by loading their usual lunches into wheel barrows.

— Bernie supported ethnic cleansing in Nicaragua (@TheRosesAreOver) April 22, 2021

IIRC, the two-hour-‘hunger strikers’ in Nancy Pelosi’s office were a different batch of self-righteous wankers, but I’m sure there’s some membership overlap (when they’re not feuding with each other)…

I was wrong, it’s the same ‘movement’:

I forgot how extremely funny this all was. https://t.co/362I8t15wp

UC and CSU will require all students and staff to be vaccinated for fall terms. That’s roughly a million people in CA that will have a vaccine mandate. The community college system may follow suit, but it’s a bit more complicated for them. They aren’t residential campuses, so the pressure isn’t as high, and they serve such a diverse population that it would be really difficult to implement. They have 2.1 million students, so its a hell of a logistical problem.

But that allows every other university to have the same mandate.

what galls me the most about this stunt is that it they only show up when Dems are in charge.

    why is that?

most likely because if they had done this stunt with 45 in office, he most likely would have had them either arrested or gassed or both.

You want to speak about your convictions, then show up when the bad guys are in charge, otherwise, shitting on erstwhile allies means that you’re just a bunch of fucking poseurs.

With a crisis as existential and immediate as climate change if you’re not laser focussed on actions that help bring about rapid changes then you’re actually helping the polluters and the deniers distract from the real issue.

Dumping shit on the White House lawn could serve as a focus-grouped example of just that.

Swear to God I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn that well-funded former intelligence assets have been tasked by the bad guys to recruit and promote infiltration of the decision-making positions in groups like ER. Nothing like excessive zealotry to disguise intentional sabotage.

It’s what I’d do, if I was a bad guy.

So, someone explained the European Super League to me in a way that made sense. US soccer is Comedy while Euro soccer is Tragedy. US sports are only focused on winning championships. If your team is dogshit, the only consequence is actually a positive – you get better draft picks the next year. But in euro soccer, winning the championship is at best balanced out against being relegated. That’s usually a worse outcome than winning a championship is a better outcome. Americans don’t really have a concept of relegation, and that’s really what the ESL was designed to mimic – a league where teams couldn’t fail. US sports self-correct. In many ways they don’t need to earn their place – it’s guaranteed.

There’s an interesting paper arguing that national climate policy has been focused on the wrong problems.

The authors argue that the problem with climate change thinking in the US is that we are concerned that we will take action, and other nations like China won’t, resulting in the US being harmed economically, and China benefitting. They argue that it’s a distributed conflict problem – that a post-carbon world will have different economic winners and losers, and nations will compete for the winners.

That’s how CA views matters. We don’t worry about cutting our carbon footprint and Alabama rolling more coal. For decades we’ve viewed climate change as an economic opportunity – we’ll be the leader on renewables or clean transportation and eventually Alabama will need to fall in line, and they’ll start shipping their dollars to CA. It’s not always easy to get the balance right, and CA has fucked up plenty, but we get it more right than wrong. But you see it with how we present it to the public. Not only do we publish our emissions inventory, but we publish it also as emissions/GDP. We proved decades ago that you could decouple economic growth from power usage and emissions.

This is why I was really excited to see Kamala in the VP role, and more CA voices in the WH. Climate change is an opportunity, and CA has always seen it as such. You can either choose it to be an opportunity that you jump at, or choose it to be an opportunity you leave to others. But you can’t just wish it away.

@Amir Khalid: I actually am impressed by a 2 hour hunger strike. That implies that they don’t ever go more than 120 minutes without eating, which is pretty fucking impressive. I mean, most people would become psychotic if they never slept more than 2 hours at a go. Can you imagine needing a root canal and having to stop 1-2 times midway through for a meal? Going to a movie means popcorn is almost mandatory.

I dare anyone here to go a week with no more than 2 hours between meals.

So, someone explained the European Super League to me in a way that made sense.

TV rights money. At the moment UEFA spreads the broadcast rights moolah around all the professional teams in Europe large and small, the ESL would reserve all their franchise and TV rights earnings to the small coterie of top clubs in the ESL.

Regular fans could also expect to be priced out of being able to watch their teams play with the corporate boxes taking over the stands, a thousand bucks a seat. A Liverpool season ticket costs about a thousand bucks US at the moment for forty-plus League and Cup matches (there’s a waiting list, natch).

I don’t think that would be allowed at our city’s site. Even pre-COVID it was “stay in your vehicle please” while men in gloves and breather masks took the stuff out of your trunk.

And I’m sure it wouldn’t be allowed at the site where you can drop off unused medications.

@Martin: The IPCC’s October 2018 report set a goal of 2050 for a net-zero carbon emissions world. I suspect they chose this round number because their experts concluded that it is the earliest achievable date. The clean energy transition is possible, but it will be, figuratively speaking, a marathon. Extinction Rebellion wants a sprint, and “degrowth” is their plan. But if we want a sustainable planet, we need a politically sustainable program to get there. The environmental lefties with pink wheelbarrows seem to take pride in advocating unworkable programs.

If we can get to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, we can move on in the remainder of the century to negative carbon emissions, through afforestation, agricultural tecniques etc., and possibly negative CO2 technologies. In his February 2019 Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists article titled “The Green New Deal: A View From Across the Atlantic,” British climate scientist Myles Allen gives a good overview of the problem of atmospheric CO2, and reviews available and potential solutions. Allen helped write the IPCC report.

Join us on April 28th and together, let’s demand that democrats lead and deliver citizenship for immigrant communities!

Pressing for action is good and proper. Demanding citizenship “now” is counter-productive. Effectively saying that only Democrats have agency is all too typical…

I always laugh at “…. now!”  It is often unaccompanied by any “how”.   Effective pressure to accept refugees had a mechanism that could be acted on.   But without identifying the mechanism, it all amounts to “please activate  the Green Lantern Corps.”  Oh, with a side of unicorns.

I’m pretty confident that he is first going for the stuff that Rs should be on board with, but likely are not.

God, I hope we ditch the filibuster, or at least change some of the rules so the Rs can’t send an email and then anything with less than 60 votes is essentially dead in the water

Hopefully he’s giving them enough rope to hang themselves, and Manchin and Sinema will wake up to the reality we live in.  Read your fucking history and learn.  (Directed at Manchin and Sinema, in case it wasn’t obvious.)
