During early COVID time, when he was getting lots of positive attention, Andrew Cuomo didn’t mind having reporters at this events and press conferences, all masked and socially distanced, of course. Now that the news has come out that he harassed a bunch of women and had aides help him with his book, this:
Amid myriad scandals that threaten his future as governor, Cuomo has barred reporters from attending his public events in recent months, citing ongoing COVID-19 safety protocols.
Instead, he answers questions from the media via Zoom at some, but not at all events. And by using Zoom instead of having in-person reporters, it allows his staff to handpick the journalists and limit follow-up questions.
[…] For his part, Cuomo said he is simply following state guidelines that bars large gatherings. He contended that reporters could overwhelm the spaces where he attends events.“When will reporters be back in the room? That is purely a function of the COVID safety requirements,” Cuomo said Tuesday when asked about the restrictions.
I’ve got nothing deeply insightful to add — I just thought that Cuomo’s ability to say that limiting reporters was a COVID thing is hi-fucking-larious, especially considering that probably everyone at those gatherings is fully vaccinated.

I have no skin in the game..
Cuomo seems like an arrogant azzhole….
but, is that impeachable?
My thing about all these folks…they come out of the woodwork and head for a tv camera…
But, don’t seem in a hurry to make it to AG James’s Office to go UNDER OATH.
You can sense my skepticism about them…..
Mary G
WTF, NY Democrats? You elect some terrible people. I would have wanted to run his ass out of state on a rail way back when he conspired with Republicans to keep them in charge of the state legislature. Example two is Andrew Yang polling first for NYC mayor, although his meeting with LGBLT folks did not go well according to my twitters.
Geeno
Nobody listens to us New Yorkers. We TOLD you America’s Mayor was not all that, but everyone else needed too actually watch him campaign in 2008 before they said to themselves “Wait a minute …. This guy’s an asshole”. We told anyone who listen “Trump is a nothing – he’s not even actually rich in any meaningful way” – no one cared.
Cuomo mania came, and we were all “It’s nice that he’s doing his job, but this guy is a serious arrogant f***ing asshole” – no one ever listens.
Geeno
@Mary G: Sadly, NY is still a machine politics place, and Cuomo controls the Democratic machine. The Republicans are such a clown show they can’t capitalize, because they are controlled by Al D’Amato’s old Long Island Machine.
Four Seasons Total Landscaping mistermix
@Mary G:
Now, I’ll agree that NY Dems do some dumb stuff, but I’m not going to take a poll this far out seriously. That said, Yang certainly showed that he has the retail political skills of a high-tech dork (i.e., none) at that meeting.
rikyrah
@Mary G:
The thing is…the groups that put boots on the ground….that will go door to door for you….he hasn’t gotten any of them.

@Mary G:
@Four Seasons Total Landscaping mistermix: MM’s right about polling this far out, it’s just name recognition at this point.
WaterGirl
@Mary G:
Fixed that. That was unforgivable. The one positive about his current scandal is that it means he can’t run for president in 2024, which i suspect he planned to do, what with how he “redeemed” himself with his handling of covid.
Baud
@Mary G:
I heard about that, but not the details of what Yang did wrong. Can you give me a quick run down?
WaterGirl
@rikyrah: I’m sorry, but Andrew Yang is a yahoo. Just the fact that he thinks he is fit for doing the job in New York tells me he’s totally clueless.
ugh. If New York isn’t smarter than that, I don’t know what to say. If a republican gets elected because Yang wins the nomination… I don’t even know what to say.
WaterGirl
@rikyrah: Thank goodness for that!
Baud
@WaterGirl:
Yang is kind of interesting, but doesn’t strike me as the type of “generalist” you need for an executive position, like mayor, or president for that matter.

Don’t apologize to me. I said from the beginning that he’s nothing but a Libertarian Dudebro.
Why others can’t see that, and that he, is in NO WAY A DEMOCRAT..

Do we let Peanut go to Summer Camp?
It would be Day Camp. I don’t know. So conflicted.
All the Adults closest to Peanut are fully vaccinated. But, do we risk it with her?

@rikyrah: I haven’t followed Yang in NYC at all, but I don’t recall him taking any anti-Democratic position during the 2020 primary, as in way outside the boundaries of our big tent.

My take, too. A Glibertarian with one Bernie-esque idea to get some twitter accounts excited. I still don’t get it.

@Four Seasons Total Landscaping mistermix: Can’t remember where I first learned this, but I looked it up and it’s true: Yang’s whole tech bro shtick is an illusion. He got rich as a corporate executive at a test prep company that was swallowed up by Kaplan. From his background and education, my guess is Yang is about as competent at coding or engineering as I am, i.e., not at all.

I feel like there’s some weird corollary to the Anne Karenina principle, that every Red State is messed up in the same way [absurd gun laws, racist voting laws, misogynistic restrictions on women’s healthcare, etc etc etc], but every Blue State is messed up in its own way. NY is full of shitbags, IL is all on the take, MA is obsessed with Republican governors, CA has its propositions and jungle primaries, Oregon, Jesus Christ–

@Baud: TNR story from 2017: How Andrew Cuomo Profits From a Republican Senate.
The article casts Andrew Cuomo as a passive participant, but I’ve read many stories claiming that he was the lead actor who ordered or agreed with Peralta to do this to take away Democratic power in the legislature and make sure nothing too progressive passed. The motive was to set up a presidential campaign as a moderate who could work across the aisle.
MM or another NYer can explain it better, as I am just an observer across the country. I had a hard time finding this article, because all his mentions are about his current mess.
sab
Stupid comment deleted. Wrong facts.
Mary G
@Baud: Oops, reading comprehension fail, I didn’t answer your actual question. MM pretty much answered it at #19. One of the things a lot of my tweeps complained about was that he promised to reopen gay bars so “you people can have fun again.”

@rikyrah:
Strictly IMHO unless routine, frequent Covid tests of the campers is part of their protocol then no, not safe.
We have Covid galloping through some area reopened schools, with hundreds of kids quarantined. I especially would hate for a little one to get Covid but having to quarantine for two weeks because some other kid has it would be both very stressful and unfun.
Betty Cracker
@Searcher: True, but Yang wasn’t an engineering student or anything remotely adjacent. He majored in poli-sci and got a law degree, IIRC. And yet he presents as a tech entrepreneur. I’m not sure if it’s a conscious act or if he just goes with people’s assumptions because it’s good branding.

@Geeno:
Oh god, that slimelord. I still remember when he got Javits to run as a third candidate (1980?) to keep Elizabeth Holtzmann from being elected senator. He had a giant house in my home town. I hope he’s dead so I can spit on his grave.
Baud
@Mary G: I was asking about Yang. I’ll look at the story MM linked to.
Yang’s policy positions during the 2020 primary, FWIW. IIRC, besides basic income, he talked a lot about job losses from automation, which a lot of people appreciated.
rikyrah
@Searcher:
speaking of California,
will someone explain what a Republican is going to run on against Newsom in a recall?
Where, in America, was there a Republican who was stronger on COVID?
Where
I’m still trying to understand what Newsom did that justifies him being recalled.

You are right.

@rikyrah: Mike DeWine. Have had issues with him forever, but with Kasich we could have been Alabama or South Dakota.

@rikyrah: That is a tough choice. Only you and your family can decide, but my off the top of my head answer for myself is that if it’s outside, she really wants to go, and the camp has strict protocols about masking, distancing, hand washing, etc., I would let her. Kids have suffered the most from this fiasco TFG created. My house teen has been going to the beach and skate park for months without contracting the virus.

I just got an email from someone saying they are UPS wanting me to update my address because they couldn’t deliver a package.
First, I don’t have any packages coming from anyone.
Second, UPS does have my address, I have an account.
Third, this is not the email address that I use with UPS, it is not one that I often give out to anyone public.
Fourth, the email looked nothing like anything I’ve ever gotten from UPS.
Fifth, the many addresses in the senders info, none of them were actual UPS addresses but contained UPS somewhere in them. Be aware of bogus bullshit from someone looking for your address or other info.

He made some mistakes, but then most everyone did and most a hell of a lot worse.
It’s part of what I see in politics, everyone (but trump) is human, with at least many of the foibles that all of us have to some degree. Some have all of them. Some make foibles look tame (that FL gov guy). When you support someone you should, but we often don’t, take those foibles serious or consider them at all. Opponents only consider them.
No republican that will run against Newsom will be successful because most of them don’t have enough of a name to be noticed and the one’s that do, stink to high heaven. That doesn’t make Newsom the best governor ever but it does make him far better than most. But it’s a big state and those looking to lead by destruction will always want to be front and center. We’ve had our fill of republican governors, boy have we had our fill.
WaterGirl
@rikyrah: Registration begins May 10, that’s 2.5 weeks away. 6 weeks makes me lean toward no.

Andrew Yang strikes me as someone who’s be OK at generating policy ideas, but is a terrible politician and would be terrible at managing constituencies.
Only half of the job is having good policy ideas. The other half is implementing them and most of THAT is managing groups of people.
Like Sanders, he’s not very good at handling people not like him.

Just found out another trans woman was murdered last night, not far from where I live. Stabbed in the neck and multiple times in the chest.
She was only 23. Rest in Power, Natalia Smüt (her stage name, don’t know her muggle name).
I didn’t know her personally, but she was a friend of several my friends. She was also a drag performer (yes, there’s trans people who also perform drag), and performed in some of the same shows I’ve done (although I don’t think I ever shared a stage with her).
