Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Republicans in disarray!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

He really is that stupid.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

    Monroe County, NY stats:

    139 new cases
    4313 active cases
    1226 deaths

    2.9% test positivity
210 people hospitalized, 46 people in the ICU

48.1% with at least 1 vaccination

    35.6% totally vaccinated

The vaccination rate is slowing down a lot.

The UK’s vaccination record is a credit-card-sized cardboard slip with hand-written details of when the vaccination(s) took place and which vaccine, batch numbers etc. It’s not any kind of vaccination passport or proof the card’s owner has been vaccinated at all (no name or other ID).

I get my second vaccination tomorrow here in Edinburgh, AstraZeneca. It’s just over 11 weeks since my first vaccination, within the promised 12 week extended interval decided on by the JCVI advisory group to try and prevent the health services crashing under the load of the large numbers of cases back in January and February. Most vaccinations happening right now in the UK are second-dose to catch up with the first-dose vaccinations carried out over the previous couple of months.

Does anyone know whether or not comprehensive vaccine records have been computerized so that we may eventually be issued a federal ID card if necessary? Such an ID could also be used to satisfy Republican voter ID requirement shenanigans – Oh and wouldn’t it be nice if prospected voters were required to have the vaccine? (not all snark, but quite a bit).

India is a disaster solely due to its fascist leader Modi; still, hope our emergency supplies of equipment (esp. oxygen generators) are rushed there asap.

They wasted a year that they could have been far better prepared for a return of the virus. The loonies that said they were ‘immune’ because the first wave was minor did bother to look at India’s population to age pyramid – younger people (under 25) make up a huge majority as a percentage of the population (and old people 60 and up, very few in comparison) and since the early Covid-19 didn’t readily infect young people (and was quickly suppressed by those that did get ill), they assumed they were safe overall. Stupid not to also realize that the virus would mutate becoming more infectious and more likely to hit the younger population. Africa is likely in a similar situation.

It will be a long and terrible spring in India (AC units are already causing fires in hospitals – not a good sign for the summer season yet to come.) Hope the local countries can speed supplies/equipment to India.

Worth keeping in mind that India has four times the population of the US. The current number for India still aren’t as bad as a percentage of the total popular at the ours’ are. Not to say it isn’t a tragedy, but we are hardly ones to go tsk tsk them.

Well, it’s a suitably sized plastic envelope inscribed “Essex Coounty, New Jersey Vaccination Record / Putting Essex County’s Health First.” and should I ever need to carry that card around anywhere, will undoubtedly be useful.  As most of nearby Krispy Kreme shops are in Manhattan, keeping my vax card with my PATH and MTA senior fare cards…

Monday in the UK we had 2064 new cases. This is a decrease of 6.5% in the rolling 7-day average. Some of these cases might have actually been identified over the weekend but not reported until yesterday. New cases by nation,

    England – 1752 (up 351)

Northern Ireland – 73 (no change from Sunday)

    Scotland – 142 (down 34)

    Wales – 97 (up 35).

Deaths – There were 6 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. Deaths by nation, England – 3, Northern Ireland – 1, Scotland – 0 and Wales – 2.

Testing – 1,477,709 tests were conducted on Sunday, 25 April. This is an increase of 6.2% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacity estimated by labs on this day was 639,654.

    Hospitalisations – Not updated.

Vaccinations – By 25 April, a total of 33,752,885 people had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 12,897,123 had received both. In percentage terms this means that 64.1% of all adults in the UK had received 1 dose of a vaccine and 24.5% were fully vaccinated. As Robert Sneddon noted above, this month the NHS has concentrated on giving 2nd doses in order to meet the 12 weeks interval decided upon.

Unlike the US, we are, in typically British fashion, forming an orderly queue based on age and it has just been announced that those aged 42 and over are now eligible to get vaccianted. Hate to boast, but, although the US may have a higher percentage of fully vaccinated people, we in the UK have more of our population with at least some protection against the virus and there is little organised opposition against getting the shots. It helps that people generally trust the NHS and all the major political parties and organised religious groups are aboard the vaccine train and urging everyone to also get on.

@e julius drivingstorm: Andy Slavit (I think it was) said weeks ago at one of the Covid briefings that there was not going to be a federal “passport”.  The CDC probably gets reports on each vaccination, but I don’t know how much personal information is attached.

It’s unfortunate that we cannot have sensible official documentation, but the Teabaggers would like nothing better than yet another thing to distract from the job at hand, so it’s smart (in this political environment) for Biden’s team not to spend any time on it.

    Cheers,

    Scott.

Scotland — 133 new cases, 1 death. Test positivity is at 1%. Over 42,000 people were vaccinated yesterday, mostly second-dose appointments. The headline numbers are noticeably better than they were even a month ago. I’m looking forward to the new cases number falling and staying below 100 soon.

Shops, restaurants, gyms etc. in Scotland opened up for business again on Monday with occupancy limits, distancing, mask requirements etc. Pubs can serve alcohol outdoors, no indoor drinking permitted quite yet. The intention is to move from Level 3 to Level 2 with nearly everything open and limited restrictions of activities by the middle of May if things continue to improve.

…whatever record keeping is done is a mish mash of incompatibility.

I love your use of the technical term “mish mash” — so elegant, so accurate!!

Good lord, I saw a picture of the woman who runs that “School” in Florida, really a Christian Madras; some Rich Family’s Fail Son married his sex worker and dad gave her a job to keep it respectable is the look of it.
