We’re at the point now where governments at all levels need to start focusing on people who’d like to get vaxxed, but have access problems, be it no car to get to where the shots are being given, or no time away from their jobs and taking care of the kids.
Not a whole lot we can do about people who have a political aversion to getting vaxxed.

The Washington Post has an article about West Virginia Governor Jim Justice’s initiative giving a $100 savings bond to people under 35 who get vaccinated for Covid, including those already vaccinated. Justice calculated this would cost the state $27.5 million, and would help shut the pandemic down. As for critics of the program’s cost, Justice said he would tell them “they can kiss my butt.” (from this morning’s Politico Playbook.)

I’m just back from getting my second AstraZeneca jab here in Edinburgh, Scotland. No queues, the vaccinators were fighting over who got to treat me. The winner turned out to be the same vaccinator who gave me my first jab back in February. I did see a lot of people entering and leaving but no visible delays, probably thanks to the invitation-only scheduling being operated by the NHS. A noticeable number of those attending were elderly, there to receive their second vaccination like me since the clock is ticking on the maximum 12-week delay between jabs promised back in January.

Tuesday the UK had 2685 new cases but bear in mind that numbers may still be affected by the weekend reporting delay. This is a decrease of 5.8% in the rolling 7-day average. New cases by nation,
England – 2410 (up 658)
Northern Ireland – 109 (up 36)
Scotland – 133 (down 9)
Wales – 33 (down 64).
Deaths – Yesterday there were 17 deaths within 28 days of a positive test. This is a decrease of 20.7% in the rolling 7-day average. New deaths by nation, England – 16, Scotland – 1. None in either Northern Ireland and Wales.
Testing – A total of 1,034,181 tests were conducted on Monday, 26 April. This is an increase of 3.4% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacitry estimated by labs on this date was 662,547.
Hospitalisations – On Sunday, 25 April there were 1608 people in hospital. On Monday, 26th there were 227 people on ventilators. The rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions was down by 20.7% as of 21st April.
Vaccinations – As of 26 April, a total of 33,843,580 people had received 1 dose of a vaccine and 13,201,811 people had received both jabs. In percentage terms this means that 64.3% of the UK adult population have had 1 shot and 25.1% were fully vaccinated.
General – Matt Hancock has said that we are on course for a relaxation on the restrictions on foreign travel in mid-May but the Government will be waiting until nearer the time before saying what countries we can go to and what (if any) specific restrictions will be in place for that country. Of course, the fact no-one will stop us going doesn’t mean the other country will let us in. A friend of mine has just learned that her half-sister, who married a Swiss man, has just died. She found that the UK Government would allow her to travel to Switzerland for the funeral under a compassionate excemption but the Swiss Government would require her to quarantine for 10 days when she got there – so she won’t be attending the funeral.

I was just reading a thread in which Jeffrey Goldberg and David Graham were fretting about vaccine/COVID denialism that SOMEHOW appeared on the right, and somebody posted the galaxy-brain idea that masking/distancing requirements in private businesses should be banned so that the additional danger would “incentivize vaccination”. I guess the assumption is that people who are already denying that the pandemic is a big deal will suddenly go all rational Homo Economicus.

@J R in WV: Outdoor mask wearing in my neighborhood was already rare, but I went out to a nearby trail yesterday afternoon and it appears to me that the new CDC guidance was basically the end of people wearing masks outdoors here, period. It used to be that many people using the trail did wear them, but that’s over.
Later I went downtown to pick up some takeout dinner; in that area there are actually signs telling people to mask up, but I didn’t see enough people out on the street to know how good compliance was (aside from outdoor restaurant seating areas, where of course the customers weren’t masking).
