Right now, local time Friday noon, after a restless night of sleep and the consumption of significant amounts of paracetamol I’m feeling a lot better but I’m still not 100%.
The UK government is starting to plan for booster vaccinations in the autumn, possibly a single dose of a different vaccine for each person to try and cover all the bases. They’ve ordered 60 million doses of Pfizer for this project.
The scientists (who are being listened to by the High Heid Yins) think there will be another surge in cases later this year here in the UK as variant versions of COVID-19 spread and cause sickness in previously-vaccinated individuals. I hope they’re wrong or at least the surge will not be very large but they know more about this than I do. @MomSense: On my walks outside I’ve sometimes taken my mask off when no one else is around, but I keep it handy.
In spite of official state mandates, in this town we were already evolving toward a situation in which nobody wears masks outside except in dense areas. It seems to me like the new CDC guidelines inspired a lot of people to just ditch them except in places where there are specifically signs telling them to mask up.
I do wonder whether it was a good idea. Massachusetts’ case rate had been dropping from the peak of the relatively modest spring wave but now it seems like that drop has stalled. It’s as if there’s a threshold we hit at which people stop being scared enough to suppress the spread of the virus, and that threshold keeps rising. And at this point the bulk of the spread is being done by young people who still haven’t gotten vaccinated (if they even can get vaccinated), so the fact that more than half the state has a shot isn’t cutting into this much.
(It does seem to be keeping the deaths down, though. It may be we get to a situation where COVID is just perpetually endemic here and people treat it as a flu, because the unvaccinated spreaders are young enough that they don’t die much. Too bad about the long COVID. School mandates might help eventually.)

Scotland — the information about COVID-19 in the past 24 hours in Scotland is updated at 2:00 p.m. local time. There were 191 new cases of COVID-19 reported and zero deaths. The test positivity rate is 1.1%. There were just over 5,000 first vaccinations and over 40,000 second vaccinations.
There will be delays to the reporting over the weekend as it’s a holiday on Monday so “real” numbers will only be available on Wednesday or thereabouts. It’s still looking good now the daily number of new cases is staying consistently below 200. We are opening up a bit though and this may push the case numbers up again if we’re not careful.

I had almost no reaction at all my Pfizer shots. I almost wish there had been a little more, a sign that something was actually happening.
And the brief mention of bad news brings to mind this quote from Douglas Adams:
Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special rules. The Hingefreel people of Arkintoofle Minor did try to build spaceships that were powered by bad news, but they didn’t work particularly well and were so extremely unwelcome whenever they arrived anywhere that there wasn’t really any point in being there.

The little town of Republic in NE WA just 30 miles south of BC in Pine covered low mountains had a superspreader “defying lockdiwn” event at the Eagles clubhouse. 95 people contracted Covid, almost 10% of the population of the town. People were transported to hospitals in Spokane and elsewhere.
When the new variants arrive this may be all too common since people have heard that Covid is over. It’s not over. What they’ve heard is the governor has eased restrictions so it must be over, right? Right!
Inslee, please stop “easing”. Set a date for any easing. Make it three or more weeks after a benchmark, tough benchmark. State that lockdiwn will be immeduate and severe if there are any violations or increased cases.
