I guess this is gross Republican week. You may remember the Duggars, the breeding Quiverfull family that were the subject of a TLC reality series, 19 Kids and Counting. Towards the end of the series, viewers were on the edge of their seats as Michelle, the mom, was about to deliver, since she had been advised by her physicians that she might rupture her uterus if she had another kid for Jesus.

That show came to an abrupt end when Josh, the oldest, was accused of molesting underage girls (including some of his sisters) as a teenager. He was also caught with an account at Ashley Madison. At the time those allegations surfaced, he was director of the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council, an anti-gay hate group. He quit that job and asked for forgivess.

Well, apparently Josh is going to have to get on his knees in front of Jesus again, since he was arrested yesterday for receiving and possessing child porn. I wonder if his wife will forgive him a second time, as she did when the Ashley Madison revelations came out, and Josh admitted to being unfaithful to her. She’s expecting the couple’s seventh child.

I’m thinking that there might be some child abusers who don’t work out of the basement of a DC pizza joint that doesn’t have a basement.

I know the network formerly called “The Learning Channel” morphed into “TLC” when execs discovered that gross reality TV content is more lucrative than educational programming. But TLC ended the original run of the first Duggar show (alternate title: “Vagina: It IS a Clown Car”) after the first molestation scandal and then recycled unindicted members of the same sicko family for a new Duggar vehicle. I mean, WTF, TLC?

ETA: @JCJ: a classic for the ages.

I have (blissfully) never followed this family, other than to note 19 kids (ewww) and the previous arrest.

Were all 19 of these kids actually born to one woman?  Or has the state been letting these sick people adopt?

Speaking of RW projection,  there is this, as reported at Wonkette: https://www.wonkette.com/well-this-trump-supporters-infiltration-of-an-antifa-group-is-just-very-believable

On August 25, 2015, Duggar checked himself into a rehabilitation facility that his family described as a “long-term treatment center”. The facility was later confirmed in media reports as Reformers Unanimous, which describes itself as “a learning atmosphere where the addicted can be discipled in an environment that is much like a greenhouse”.

    [Re-post from dead thread.]
    This fuckin’ guy.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) told reporters that he does not support the bill to make D.C. the nation’s 51st state, the Washington Post reports.
“Manchin, a key swing vote in the closely divided Senate, said he believed a constitutional amendment, rather than legislation, would be required to admit D.C. as a state. His stance deals a major blow to statehood advocates who were hoping for his support after the bill passed the House last week.”

Hey, Joe (where you goin’…oops, wrong song):

On March 12, 1959, Congress approved Hawaii for admission to the union as the 50th state, marking the last time statehood was subject to votes in the House and Senate.
President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Hawaii Admissions Act a week later on March 18, 1959, and Hawaii officially became the 50th state on August 21, 1959, after Hawaiians voted to become a state in June 1959 under terms specified in the Admissions Act.
The Constitution grants general state-creation powers to Congress in Article IV, Section 3, under the Admissions Clause, which reads: “New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.”

There’s a woman who wrote a long and detailed report on the RW Xtian leaders of the cults the Duggars follow, and have promoted on their show.  Two of these guys have molested young women.  They prescribe that children smile and obey parents, especially fathers, immediately.  Some prescribe shunning if their is misbehavior.  This can include dating the wrong person, even if that person is a homeschooled conservative Christian.  The list of psychological abuses is long.  It seems Medieval.

I have an open thread question that has nothing whatsoever to do with the Duggars. I trust no one will mind not thinking about those folks. I am 67 years old and in the market for a new bicycle, one with a step-through frame, and I could use recommendations. For decades I rode a touring bike, and rode it quite a bit. By that I mean a road bike with drop handlebars and derailleurs, but heavier and more robust than a racing style bike, with fenders, racks, thicker tires, and the handlebars not nearly so low. It was a good all-weather commuting and errand bike, and fine for exercise and recreation since I didn’t care about speed. One advantage for me over a hybrid was that I was susceptible to losing feeling in my hands on long rides, and drop bars let you fight this by changing hand positions frequently. Another advantage to that kind of bike was being able to grocery shop using two big panniers (I don’t have daytime access to a car).

I loved that bike, which always made me think of the story of my father’s ax: every single bit of it had been replaced at one time or another, even the frame, but it was somehow the same comfortable old friend. Unfortunately, with time, I got less and less able to swing my leg over the rear wheel and saddle, especially with full panniers, and I had a couple of embarrassing falls while mounting. There isn’t always a curb to stand on, and one shouldn’t need one. It would be one thing to break a hip riding a bike, but truly humiliating to break one getting on a bike. Finally, in November, I had an ill-timed breakdown and spill in an unfortunate place, Wacker Drive, that left the bike not only unrideable but unrollable. Shaken up, I locked it where I was and never saw it again. So now I am looking for a recommendation for something with a step-through or mixte frame that I can use for most of the same purposes. The main difference is that I don’t care anymore about being comfortable riding long distances. This will be for running errands within a radius of five or ten miles. It will get years of frequent use, so I don’t mind spending for quality. It should be able to mount a large rear rack (or come with one). A bonus would be a hub gear in back instead of derailleurs, which are a messy pain and lead to messy cuffs. There are no mountains to climb in Chicago.

I don’t know anyone who rides one of these, so I have no one to ask, and the kind of on-line advice I need has been hard to find. Articles tend to be of along the lines of “good for you, old codger – here is a nice inexpensive bike you can tootle around on without falling – but wouldn’t you really prefer electric?” I wouldn’t. The market is incredibly fragmented with city bikes, cruisers, comfort bikes, etc., all seeming to work the same territory. Has anyone been through this and found something they can recommend?

    @PST:

This is my commute and knockaround recreation bike.

It’s not a step-through frame but hits most marks for city riding–I have commuted on it ten years and it by now has more than 10k miles (probably more like 20).

I’ll cite four things that make it perfect for town: belt drive, Alfine 11-sp hub, hydraulic disk brakes, 38mm tires. They make it silent (actually zero noise except tire on pavement), smooth (like buttah), simple to shift (you can shift while stopped), zero chain grease or grit, nearly zero flats (compared to road tires).

Maintenance is brake pads, hub oil changes, tires. That’s it. I added bar ends to the flat bars to give myself a needed second hand position and replaced the stock saddle and hand grips with good leather ones. I don’t have fenders because I hate riding in the rain, but there are mounts.

You might find that frame top tubes rarely are horizontal, sloping downward before they join the seat tube (random example). Might be all the clearance you need.

    Happy hunting!

There are a whole group of women who escaped the life and are just really brave  people and will happily educate anyone on what they (now) view as abuse. It’s not easy getting out.

I had the saddest child porn divorce/custody case pre-COVID. Guy had daughters between 6-9. He had been swapping some of the catalog of known, tagged images of prepubescents, about 10 yrs old. The wife was a total weakling and refused to tell the kids why dad wasn’t available to spend time with them outside of virtual space.

I had to represent him, and was stuck with the explanations as to why everyone from CPS to the criminal system as to why he couldn’t be trusted with live contact. High ick factors on it, but my hands were pretty tied.

Oddly enough, her lies to them made everything worse.

Thing is, to me, that sounds like a reason to make certain federal buildings the equivalent of embassies, and possibly pass an amendment that would put certain federal officials under the sole jurisdiction of the federal government, and the right laws to make sure no Bill Barr could quash any and all Republican should-be prosecutions.

It was and is a federal district.  However, the 23rd amendment, granting electors to the district complicates that.  A simple legal review suggests that Congress can just redefine the District along the lines of the House bill and then admit the territory that used to be in the District as a state.  However, how this will go in the courts is not something there is any way to predict, giving Rs and Manchin a potential out.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out – in my opinion DC should be a state at this point, but this is not as clear cut as everyone wants.  On the other hand, there were potential reasons the 27th amendment could not be ratified and added to the Constitution … and then it got to 38 states and it became part of the Constitution with no actual issues to speak of.

There is a well-known and very clear reporting artifact with covid, in that the lowest numbers show up on the weekend, the highest in the middle of the week. This is probably because many of the offices that compile and report the data up the chain are closed on weekends. That’s why they always refer to the current one-week daily average, to even out that artificial cyclicity. Today’s one-week daily average is a little above 51,000. It has been going down, but slooooowly.

I posted on another thread where this monster was mentioned that years ago I was part of a Grand Jury that was presented a case wherein a guy had been found to have multiple videos on his computer of his own daughter being raped (perhaps by himself) accumulated over years.

The police/prosecutor had prepared a print out of stills from that monster’s video collection which was passed out to the Jury members. I couldn’t stand to see all of it. I looked at enough to know what was in there, to know what was going on, and voted to hand up the indictment. Horrible.
