Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, man.

Republicans in disarray!

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

This fight is for everything.

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

“Look, it’s not against the rules anywhere, but a black woman with power was dating and there has to be something wrong with that.”

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

We’re not going back!

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Late Night #PizzaGaetz Open Thread: Alexandra Petri Makes An Excellent Point

by Anne Laurie|  April 6, 20211:35 am| 43 Comments

This post is in: Excellent Links, Open Threads, Republican Venality, The War On Women

read the piece that within minutes inspired a man to send me an email calling me “toots”!!!!!!! https://t.co/CddvHijrPQ

— Alexandra Petri (@petridishes) April 5, 2021

Back when I was in high school, my slightly younger brothers and their Boy Scout friends used to attempt to gross me out with stories about ‘fun’ camping trips where they (allegedly) tortured small animals, and each other. None of these mostly-harmless younglings would admit to being responsible when I confronted them individually, but when you got more than two of them in one room, Mark Twain’s theory of mob behavior ruled. BUT THAT WAS FIFTY YEARS AGO, MEN!

There are several details of the Matt Gaetz story that keep sticking in my head, but the one that sticks in it most is the report that the Florida Republican used to wander around and show his colleagues nude photos of people he had slept with. There’s a kind of grim weirdness to the idea of these interactions (which Gaetz denies) — a very “I Read On eHow.com That Men Bond Over Conquests” bewilderment. The callousness and the violation involved are enough of a sock to the gut. But the fact that this was allegedly known about him is what keeps getting to me. The fact that this, or something in this neighborhood of bad, occasioned senior staff from then-House Speaker Paul D. Ryan’s (R-Wis.) office to have a talk with Gaetz about professional behavior.

Over all of this I keep hearing the uncomfortable laughter of Billy Bush. I keep coming back to the fact that it takes two to make a locker room…

To me, this is something you do, ideally, zero times. You never experience the impulse to do it, and you lead a pleasant life. You travel. You eat lunchmeat sandwiches. Maybe you do a marathon, or climb something. You lead a blithe existence for many decades, you die in your bed in your mid-nineties surrounded by your cherished relatives, and in all that time, you never walk up to a colleague on the floor of the House of Representatives and out of nowhere present him with a nude photograph of someone you claim to have had sex with.

But if you can’t do it zero times, then ideally it happens only once. It happens only once, because the moment you do it, the person you show it to responds the way a person should respond. You produce your photograph to your colleague, and your colleague looks at you and says, “Never show that to anyone, ever again. Go home and rethink your life. I do not feel closer to you. If anything, I want to have you removed forcibly from my presence by strong gentlemen whose biceps are tattooed with ‘MOM.’ The fact that you thought this would make us closer makes me question every decision in my life that has led me to this point. Leave now and never come back.”…

… I am not writing this for Matt Gaetz. I am talking to the person who was on the receiving end. The person who was presented with this behavior and had a choice of how to respond. I am talking to the person without whose chuckle or back-slap this situation would, perhaps, have been just a little less bad.

This is a plea for those small awkward no’s. The moment will inevitably come for you to offer one. And when I think of how much difference could be made by just one person, one guy in a locker room, or around a campfire, or even on the floor of Congress, saying, uncomfortably, “What?” or “Why would you show someone that?” — sometimes I want to chew glass. It is a small favor to ask. But it could reshape this whole place, if it happened enough.

Gaetz Keeps Digging

by Betty Cracker|  April 5, 20213:17 pm| 145 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Scandal weasel Rep. Matt Gaetz refuses to drop the damn shovel. Maybe he’s acting as his own attorney, which would explain why he has such a fool for a client, because wouldn’t any competent lawyer serve him a nice steaming mug of STFU? In every TV appearance since the story broke, Gaetz has dug a deeper hole by doing things like defending or denying skeevy activities for which he hasn’t yet been accused.

Today, Gaetz wrote an op-ed in the wingnut Washington Examiner (no linky for the stinky; is easily Googlable). The piece is about what you’d expect if you’ve followed the disastrous media appearances, with Gaetz defending his conduct in gross and squirrely ways and trying to rope bystanders into his predicament. Here’s how it starts off:

Washington scandal cycles are predictable, and sex is especially potent in politics. Let me first remind everyone that I am a representative in Congress, not a monk, and certainly not a criminal.

LOL! It gets worse. Here are a couple of excerpts:

Folks won’t be surprised that bizarre claims are being made about me shortly after I decided to take on the most powerful institutions in the Beltway: the establishment; the FBI; the Biden Justice Department; the Cheney political dynasty; even the Justice Department under Trump.

The wheels of the bus go round and round, and thump-thump, there goes Barr. Also, it’s ironic that Gaetz calls out the “Cheney political dynasty” when he’s a nepotism legislator his own self, but I guess he’s counting on that not being widely known outside of Florida. Or maybe it’s just a profound lack of self-awareness, which is entirely believable with that blockhead.

Anyhoo, there’s a lot of herp-de-derp Hunter Biden and blah blah blah Bill Clinton and yada yada yada Andrew Cuomo, but then we finally get around to a preview of upcoming attractions:

You’ll see more “drip, drip, drip” of leaks into the media from the corrupt Justice Department and others. When you do, ask yourself why. They aren’t coming for me — they are coming for you. I’m just in the way.

Uh huh. That’s just what The Former Guy said even as his campaign was draining supporters’ bank accounts with shady “default” recurring contributions. It’s the busted conman’s refrain.

I think there’s a decent chance this scandal ultimately ends Gaetz’s political career since he’s a moron who allegedly left a paper trail of his crimes. His district probably won’t cough up anyone appreciably better from a legislative standpoint, but the fewer rich and entitled frat-boy Republicans in Congress, the better, so good riddance to bad rubbish.

Here’s hoping Gaetz’s flame-out is epic enough for political gossip rags like Politico to start looking at his relationship with FL Gov. Ron DeSantis. As I’ve mentioned, I don’t think DeSantis is stupid enough to be involved in the Gaetz-Greenberg criminal activities portfolio (although I suppose that’s possible).

But Gaetz was definitely a high-profile DeSantis ally. Gaetz and DeSantis were pals during their statehouse days. Gaetz was an early supporter of DeSantis’s gubernatorial bid and co-chaired the transition team when DeSantis won in 2018. DeSantis should definitely be asked about that. Repeatedly.

Not Everything Needs a ‘Well, Actually’

by $8 blue check mistermix|  April 5, 202111:31 am| 151 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Over the weekend, the New York Times’ version of Nate Silver, Nate Cohn, wrote up a “well, actually” piece about the Georgia voter restriction law. According to the best research available — two papers (!) — it seems that it’s hard to see a major impact on turnout, and partisan advantage, for some examples of voter suppression.

First, pardon my commitment to “data” and “science” if I don’t think that two studies of questionable applicability tell me much of anything about the effects of the Georgia law. This is, in general, my gripe about data journalism: there’s just not enough good data to draw evidence-based conclusions, so it devolves into speculative punditry with a patina of scientific respectability. I stopped following Nate Silver on Twitter because I can get uninformed speculation from the guy sitting alone at the end of the bar if I ever feel the need.

Second, some things are beyond the need to do a sketchy “well actually” analysis piece, and a fundamental right like voting is a great example of one of those things. “Well, actually, we found two studies of people who had their little toes amputated and they walk just fine” is not a justification for a program of toe amputation. Voting is a right, full stop, and people’s right to do it should not be unreasonably infringed. Six hour lines with no water is an unreasonable infringement. We don’t need to go further than that, and we certainly don’t need a privileged white dude who grew up in a Seattle suburb and moved to DC after private college to push out a “well, actually” piece about a Jim Crow revival.

Trump campaign and defaults

by David Anderson|  April 5, 20219:40 am| 27 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance

We all saw this New York Times story over the weekend about how the Trump campaign used extraordinarily aggressive and sketchy fundraising tactics last fall:

What the Blatts soon discovered was $3,000 in withdrawals by the Trump campaign in less than 30 days. They called their bank and said they thought they were victims of fraud.

“It felt,” Russell said, “like it was a scam.”

But what the Blatts believed was duplicity was actually an intentional scheme to boost revenues by the Trump campaign and the for-profit company that processed its online donations, WinRed. Facing a cash crunch and getting badly outspent by the Democrats, the campaign had begun last September to set up recurring donations by default for online donors, for every week until the election. [ my emphasis added ]

There is an amazing amount of details in the story that are well worth reading but the word that is sticking out to me is default.

Defaults matter a lot because there is a simple fact of both physics and human behavior — inertia matters a lot. It is easier to get a person to do nothing than to get them to do something. Therefore, defaults matter a lot. This is one of the key insights behind the entire “nudge” movement. Setting defaults matter because most of the time, people will not readily or easily move out of the default.

In the NY Times story, the Trump campaign used an “opt-out” default for people to make a recurring donation. The donors had the ability to move but that ability was getting buried further and further underneath an avalanche of words that were designed to impose cognitive costs and short-circuit critical thinking. Opt-outs mean a lot of people will stick around while “opt-in” solutions that require checking a box will get a lot fewer people making an active choice to make a recurring donation. Opt-outs can be beneficial; 401Ks are currently opt-out enrollment as a means of a socially beneficial nudge.

Why does this matter for health insurance?

Picking insurance is hard. Picking insurance is painful. Figuring out optimal or at least satisficing choices is demanding. People have a lot of choice inertia.
