Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

“woke” is the new caravan.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Bark louder, little dog.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

This really is a full service blog.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

No Justins, No Peace

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

I am pretty sure Katy Tur wasn’t always such a bootlicking sycophant.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

On The Road – Albatrossity – Brazil 2011, part 2

This post is in: Albatrossity, On The Road, Photo Blogging

Send in your Paris pics if you have them.  Photos for Springtime in Paris don’t have to be Spring photos – it’s just that we will be featuring the photos as a series in the springtime.  Plus, I thought Springtime in Paris had a nice ring to it.

On the Road: Week of April 5  (5 am)

evap – Myanmar, December 2016, Part 1
?BillinGlendaleCA – — Scheduled, Classic edition
JanieM – China, Part 1/8

?  And now, part 2 of Albatrossity’s 2011 trip to Brazil.  Such amazing creatures, and the Scarlet Ibis is amazing!

Albatrossity

The second half of our 2011 trip to Brazil was spent near the mouth of the Amazon, in the city of Belem and on the island of Marajó, a delta island that is larger than the state of Maryland, or approximately the size of Switzerland. But before we get to those, I will add a couple of images from our time near Manaus.

One of the creatures that we all wanted to see was a sloth. And we did see quite a few, including one mom with baby. She did not get out in the open for a family portrait, but this guy did, and you can see that is a three -toad sloth, specifically the Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus), which is the most widespread sloth species.

Credit Where It Is Due: Please Allow Me To Introduce Ms. Hannah Simpson Creator of Unleaven the Curve

by Adam L Silverman|  April 4, 202111:17 pm| 70 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

When I did my Passover post, I started with a picture I had seen posted somewhere on the Internet of a woman wearing a piece of matzo as a face mask. I had no idea who she was, but as it was just before the start of Passover 2020 and I thought it was hilarious, I saved it. And then I used it for the top of this year’s post.

I can now happily inform you all, and give credit where it is due, that the creator of the picture and the matzo face mask model in the picture is Ms. Hannah Simpson. Ms. Simpson tried to let me and everyone else know in the comments, but our SPAM filter ate it and it was only discovered a short time ago by WaterGirl who forwarded it to me. Here’s the original image, which, of course has attribution as it was tweeted by Ms. Simpson:

This year in quarantine.
Next year in Jerusalem.#UnleavenTheCurve#Passover2020 #Pesach #virtualseder #covid19 #passover #matzah #facemask pic.twitter.com/uFaza8BCQW

— Hannah Simpson חנה הייה-לב סימפסון (@hannsimp) April 8, 2020

And here’s Ms. Simpson’s explanation via her now unSPAMed comment:

In reply to Sister Golden Bear.
@Sister Golden Bear: Ironic the post talks about this, but the woman in the cover photo of this blog post is herself transgender. It’s me, and this is my photo that I have not yet been properly attributed for. It’s proper title is #UnleavenTheCurve and it belongs to and features Hannah Simpson.

In reply to me (Adam)
Hi Adam Silverman,
This is actually me, my selfie. Here is the original link, in fact:
https://www.instagram.com/p/B-dLXzyHvy1/?igshid=145ozedtcttt5
I’m a Jewish and transgender comedian who regularly writes and speaks on the intersections of queer identity, our faith, and modern life in general. Since the pandemic, I have also been working in Covid19 ICUs, morgues, vaccine sites, and as a contact tracer because I wanted to step up and serve my community (New York City). You can find lots more of my writing including about Passover by googling my name and Passover. I also run an Etsy shop selling Jewish Pride pins and jewelry at ChangedMe.etsy.com.
The hashtag and title for the photograph is #UnleavenTheCurve.
I hope you will promptly please properly attribute the image to me by editing this post immediately. As your blog is monetized, that’s a separate conversation to be had. I ask that you add my full name and clickable hyperlinks to my Instagram.com/hsimpso and/or Twitter.com/hannsimp accounts to drive followers to me. I also highly recommend that you consider using readily available “reverse image searches” before posting pictures because this information would have come up, and exposure without attribution is plagiarism. Saying you are not sure where something came from, if no due diligence was taken, does not suffice.
Thank you for addressing this promptly.

I will add one final point: Ms. Simpson, no offense was intended, nor attempt to steal or misappropriate your work. Had I had any idea whose it was, and that it was created for a specific purpose/campaign, I would have first tried reaching out and asking if you were okay with us using it and, if you were not, then I would not have done so.

And I’m very sorry that both I and Balloon Juice made your acquaintance in this manner. I’ve had my professional work plagiarized in the past, so I understand exactly what your concerns are and I hope that this post, and adding appropriate attribution to the original one, will make proper amends.

If you still want me to take the pic in the original post down, please let me know and I will do so. I’m going to go, as soon as I hit publish on this one, and put the actual tweet in in place of it and ensure that it is properly attributed with a note indicating what I did and when.

This was too funny!

This Car Talk video is surely old news, and decades old, but  someone (sorry, don’t recall who!) Kattails linked to it last week and boy is his laughter contagious.  They are reading a story from The Onion.  It’s a slow start, but at one minute in I couldn’t stop laughing.

Medium Cool with BGinCHI – Climate Change, Human Impact

by WaterGirl|  April 4, 20216:00 pm| 114 Comments

This post is in: Guest Posts, Medium Cool, Popular Culture, Culture as a Hedge Against This Soul-Sucking Political Miasma We're Living In

In case you’re new to Medium Cool, BGinCHI is here once a week to offer a thread on culture, mainly film & books, with some TV thrown in.

Medium Cool with BGinCHI – Climate Change, Human Impact

For this week’s Medium Cool, let’s talk about fiction/film, climate change, and refugees.

One of my MA students is writing a fascinating thesis, and his work makes me wonder what kinds of texts or films people might add to the conversation. Here’s his argument:

“Through an exploration of the important interventions marginalized speculative artists make in a culture obsessed with materialism and endless consumption, this thesis examines how climate refugees in fiction and film navigate dying ecologies and explores why their stories matter.”

Most of the works he’s considering are speculative fiction. What works come to mind when you think about stories in which climate/environment and refugees/immigrants intersect?

Happy Easter Open Thread: Meet The Ducklings

I thought you might like to learn their names*.

*names will be adjusted if their sex reveals itself to be male.

They are spending most of the day outside today, weather is warm and they are so very happy out there, even in their little penned area.

I’ve been calling them Nikki and Nora for weeks now, but didn’t want to introduce them by name until I was sure it was going to stick. I can easily tell them apart and their personalities are polar opposites, which is fun. I’m still 90% convinced they are female because of the way they talk – they have a strong, high pitched quack and they talk constantly. Males have a gravelly voice and are not as talkative. But until we see a turned up tail feather (male) or see eggs (around October) it’s all speculation.

Meanwhile, meet Nora:

The reason I know the Biden infrastructure plan is immensely popular is that the GOP has preferred to declare war on the national pastime.
