Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

This blog will pay for itself.

The current Supreme Court is a rogue court. Very dangerous.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

The new republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Cole, when it comes to calico cats, restraint is overrated.

Trump’s legal defense is going to be a dumpster fire inside a clown car on a derailing train.

If marriage is the equivalent of selling yourself into slavery, women with self respect should reject the offer.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Even though I know this is a bad idea, I’m off to do it anyway!

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

The arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend itself. it’s up to us.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Enjoy your car and boat ride, Karen:

Last week, a police officer responded to an Alaska Airlines terminal in Juneau as state Sen. Lora Reinbold clashed with staffers over mask rules. It was a familiar battle for the Republican lawmaker, a vaccine skeptic who has blasted flight attendants as “mask bullies” and accused the airline of “mask tyranny.”

Now, she isn’t welcome on their flights at all. Alaska Airlines this weekend banned Reinbold “for her continued refusal to comply with employee instruction regarding the current mask policy,” the airline said in a statement to The Washington Post.

That’s a serious problem for the lawmaker, because Alaska Airlines operates the only regular flights to the state capital from her home in the Anchorage area, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Reinbold scrambled on Sunday to get to Juneau via an arduous 14-plus-hour car ride, including a jaunt through Canada, to reach a ferry to the capital.

“Alaska I went to new heights to serve you & have a new appreciation for the marine ferry system,” Reinbold posted on Sunday night.

Reinbold also lashed out at the airline, claiming that her latest fight over mask rules was caused by “uptight employees at the counter” and arguing that Alaska Airlines was wrong to publicly confirm that she had been banned.

“Alaska Airlines sent information, including my name, to the media without my knowledge nor permission. I do believe constitutional rights are at risk under corporate covid policies,” she wrote on Facebook.

Here we are, swimming in fucking vaccine while people in India are dying for lack of oxygen and medical care, and anti-vaxxer idiots like this woman flap their ignorant gums, oblivious of the fucking medical miracle that we enjoy because of our wealth and privilege.

In a similar vein, this weekend I heard a story from a young woman who had just returned from a family trip in Utah. Unknown to them, the mask mandate in that state had expired during her trip. She and her parents walked into a gas station with their masks on and were angrily refused service unless they took them off. What are the odds that the clerk refusing service was vaccinated? I put them somewhere between zero and none.

ETA: I just checked Google Maps, and they say it takes 19 hours (not 14) to go from Anchorage to Juneau. That includes an 8 hour ferry ride from Haines to Juneau. There is a fast ferry, but it’s currently closed due to COVID. Also, entry to Canada is possible but not guaranteed — you have to follow rules, including masking and social distancing.

A BFD for the tropical world

by David Anderson|  April 26, 20218:30 am| 44 Comments

NEW: Oxford researchers find malaria vaccine is highly effective:

• Vaccine efficacy of 77% in African children

• Vaccine, trialled in 450 children, shows favourable safety profile and was well-tolerated

More info ⬇️https://t.co/vOvEuICo2Q

This is, truly a BFD for the tropical world.

Malaria kills hundreds of thousands of people per year and infects millions. A reliable and relatively inexpensive vaccine will be a massive improvement in the quality of life for hundreds of millions of people. It still needs to go through Phase 3 trials, but getting out of the Phase 2 trial stage means that this vaccine has surmounted a significant hurdle.

Before I took office, I promised help was on the way. Just three months in, I’m proud to say help is here. We’ve delivered over 150 million relief checks, administered over 200 million shots, and are working hard to build back better every day.

COVID-19 Coronavirus Updates: Sunday / Monday, April 25-26

More than a billion Covid vaccine doses have been administered globally. But that's not enough to achieve herd immunity https://t.co/RmNsoG9iFI pic.twitter.com/pgM7TIfVzV

— delthia ricks ?? (@DelthiaRicks) April 24, 2021

Milestone numbers:

More than one billion doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered worldwide, less than five months after the first mass inoculation programs began to be rolled out, according to an AFP tally at 17:45 GMT on Saturday.

At least 1,002,938,540 doses have been administered in 207 countries and territories, according to the tally compiled from official sources.

More than half, or 58 percent, have been given in three countries: the United States with 225.6 million doses, China with 216.1 million doses and India with 138.4 million…

While the majority of poor countries have also started to vaccinate, mainly thanks to the Covax program, inoculation is still largely a privilege of high-income countries, as defined by the World Bank, which are home to 16 percent of the world’s population but have administered 47 percent of vaccine doses…

Despite the troubles that has plagued it since it was approved for use, the jab developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University is the most widely used so far, and has been administered in three-quarters or 156 of those countries and territories that have started vaccinating.

A rival jab developed by Pfizer and BioNTech has been administered in 91 countries, or 44 percent of the total. Another shot developed by Moderna has been administered in 46 countries or 22 percent. Sinopharm’s jab has been administered in at elast 41 countries or 20 percent of the total, Sputnik V in at least 32 countries or 15 percent, and Sinovac in at least 21 or 10 percent.

More specifics at the link. (Read the whole thing, it’s not long!)

JanieM – China 2/8

?  And now, back to Albatrossity.

Albatrossity

Often spring in flyover country will sort of sputter along. A few days of cool overcast weather, a few days of hot weather, and then all of a sudden it will be summer. As I write this we are still sputtering. Yesterday we had a high of 86F, today it is cool, overcast, and drippy with occasional excitement from a passing thunderstorm. So these pictures will reflect that; there will be some winter birds, some migrants, and some year-round residents warming up for the summer season.

Our backyard feeders have an abundance of several species of woodpeckers in winter; we have Northern Flicker, Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. All of them like this suet log, although when it is nearly empty I get the stink-eye ,like this Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) male is giving me.

Sunday Evening Oscars Open Thread

by Anne Laurie|  April 25, 20217:15 pm| 80 Comments

This post is in: Movies, Open Threads

“Right out of the gate, people are going to know: ‘We’ve got to put our seatbelt on,’” Steven Soderbergh says of Sunday's Oscars, which he's producing along with Stacey Sher Jesse Collins. They're promising a ceremony less like TV, more like a film.https://t.co/YIx0DtAZNX

— AP Entertainment (@APEntertainment) April 24, 2021

Just in case anyone’s still interested, here’s some how-to-access journalism from C/Net:

… The 93rd Academy Awards have been a long time coming. The Academy delayed the awards by two months, accommodating films released in 2020 through to February 2021. In addition, movies released straight to digital platforms like HBO Max are also eligible for Oscars. One positive is, thanks to the delay, you can stream almost all of the films right now…

The Oscars are spread over two locations: Los Angeles Union Station and the Dolby Theater. Only nominees, their guest and presenters have been given the green light to attend. Nominees who don’t attend won’t be allowed to Zoom in…

The Oscars will air on ABC in the US. To stream online, there are a couple of options:

– ABC is streaming the live broadcast of the Oscars on the ABC website, but only to specific cities and only after you sign in with a participating pay TV provider — typically a cable company, satellite provider or livestreaming service.
– Another option is Locast, which streams local broadcasters, including ABC, in certain large US cities, for free. And of course, you could always use an antenna to try to pick up the ABC station in your area (DVR optional).
– If you subscribe to a live TV streaming service that carries ABC in your city, you can use it to watch the Oscars too. AT&T TV, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV all carry ABC in most US cities. All of them offer a seven-day free trial, so you can sign up now and cancel after the ceremony if you want. Note that Sling TV, Fubo TV, AT&T and Philo don’t carry ABC at all…

Is there an Oscars red carpet?
It’ll be a much smaller red carpet event this year, but we might see a few interesting face-mask-and-outfit-coordinated combos if the Grammys are anything to go by (although you won’t see nominees wearing masks during the show). Based on last year’s programming, you’ll be able to watch the red carpet on the ABC site or app from 5:30 p.m. ET, the Academy’s official Twitter from 6:30 p.m. ET, or the E network, available on many live TV streaming services, from 5 p.m. ET…

Who’s presenting the Oscars?
Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Bong Joon-ho, Don Cheadle, Bryan Cranston, Laura Dern, Harrison Ford, Regina King, Marlee Matlin, Rita Moreno, Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger and Zendaya will be handing out awards.
