Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Everybody saw this coming.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Come on, man.

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Infrastructure week. at last.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

We still have time to mess this up!

At John Adams Middle School/Will Rogers Elementary in Santa Monica, where anti-mask activists are protesting public safety guidelines requiring masks in school.

Multiple SMPD cruisers nearby.

This is the third such protest in Los Angeles that I’ve documented. pic.twitter.com/qqozOF2zBd

Mr. Braslow has a long thread of video tweets, some with pushback from neighbor adults, and:

A student asks one of the protesters if he is a doctor and tries to give him a mask. He asks, “Where’s your data? On Google?”, and then walks away. pic.twitter.com/WFt4lf5839

These people are *dangerously* idiotic…

Dr. Pope points out how hospitals reached their breaking point over the winter.

“These scenarios have repeated themselves throughout the world. If you look at what’s going on in India right now, is that fake?“

Later: I’m not owned, those middle school kids are owned!

middle and high school children have a preternatural eye for human weakness. some use this power for evil. others, for good.

Ah, the classic anti-science “I think those pointy-headed scientists and doctors don’t know what they’re talking about, but anyone who disagrees with me must be brainwashed!”

The wingnut I monitor on Twitter is constantly retweeting things about “lockdown lovers” and “mask fanatics.” They’re freedom-loving, we only support these things because we love restricting and controlling people, not because we believe it’s necessary and it works. Yesterday he approvingly forwarded someone who is still, still! spouting “their lockdowns have done far more harm than the virus.”

They’re not just doing these things to “own the libs,” they really do believe. Sigh.

The shock when some of these people come out of their Fox News/early bird special coffee shops/megachurches bubbles is very entertaining.  There is no such thing as too much schadenfreude.

The dude who’s creeped out at blue or green hair cannot be from LA; kids have been doing that here for decades. I knew a girl who used KoolAid in the 70s. And chosing The People’s Republic of Santa Monica of all places, probably because the Miller creep is from there and they think somebody must have supported him or been convinced by his entirely true and sensible fascist/racist points.

Congrats to L.A., San Francisco and Trinity counties for squeaking into the yellow tier today. I’m jealous. OC’s numbers improved slightly, to 2.4 new cases per 100,000 residents, 1.3% test positivity, 72 new cases, and 97 people hospitalized.

We looked for a restaurant Saturday and they were either closed or packed cheek to jowl outside, so I worry. Disneyland is open at 25% with insanely high ticket prices and a waiting list out the wazoo, so there’ll be pressure to look the other way there. The ads are everywhere.

Nearly gave me hives being in there. I am not normally a person that reacts that way. But I just wanted to get out of there. It’s crazy.

I only have one shot in me so I’m not fully vaccinated up yet, but the way I felt, I wonder if it’ll be anytime soon before I am comfortable eating out again inside. I do alright with outside and empty spots between tables, but I didn’t even like looking at the packed outdoor/indoor eating as if it was pre-pandemic.

I live in the Bay Area on the peninsula so I assume a decent vaccination rate, but still heeby jeebies.

As a parent of a kid who’s just finishing up middle school, this all sounds perfectly normal to me.  Blue or green hair? Sure, seen plenty of that.  Middle fingers to idiotic adults who aren’t their parents or teachers, who are feeding them some line of bullshit? That’s exactly what I’d expect.

I was a 13 y o kid so long ago that we weren’t allowed to give anyone the finger, and in HS my cousin, who was a 4.00 gpa senior student, was expelled for allowing his hair to grow long, as in down to his collar and over his ears.

My uncle showed up the next morning with his kid and a lawyer. Which ended that bull shit right then and there. Uncle J was nearly a Marxist, not in favor of long hair, but big on personal freedom. I was never a 4.0 student… Dean’s List pretty much, but never 4.0. Back then you couldn’t get above a 4.0.

I wish I had the self-assurance to give asshole adults the finger when I was 13, back in 1964 — but it was a very different world back then. Before the Civil Rights act, for example. Which took 20 year to take any effect in many places. Was so not in effect in 1972 Mississippi~!!!~
