… The 366,161 new infections and 3,754 deaths reported by the health ministry were off a little from recent peaks, taking India’s tally to 22.66 million with 246,116 deaths.
As many hospitals grapple with an acute shortage of oxygen and beds while morgues and crematoriums overflow, experts have said India’s actual figures could be far higher than reported.
Sunday’s 1.47 million tests for COVID-19 were this month’s lowest yet, data from the state-run Indian Council of Medical Research showed. The figure compared with a daily average of 1.7 million for the first eight days of May.
The number of positive results from the tests was not immediately clear, however…
Delhi’s health minister said the city was running out of vaccines, with just three to four days of supplies remaining of AstraZeneca’s (AZN.L) vaccine, made by the Serum Institute of India and branded Covishield, the NDTV news channel reported.
By Sunday, the world’s largest vaccine-producing nation had fully vaccinated just over 34.3 million, or only 2.5%, of its population of about 1.35 billion, government data shows…

@rikyrah: Though legal analysis has stated that most businesses can require the vaccine, none of them (even hospitals) want to waste legal fees getting that confirmed on drugs that still are only under emergency authorization. As soon as the FDA fully approves them, you’ll see businesses slowly start to require them. Slowly, because people who refuse to get vaccinated can’t be easily replaced now, not even at higher salaries, despite the constant refrain here that more $$ will draw scores of bodies. There are precious few bodies available right now, no matter what the pay.

Sunday in the UK we had 1770 new cases. This is a decrease of 4.3% in the rolling 7-day average. Weekend warnings apply. New cases by nation,
England – 1418 (down 324)
Northern Ireland – 98 (up 17)
Scotland – 200 (down 24)
Wales – 54 (did not report on Saturday.)
Deaths – There were 2 deaths within 28 days of a positive test reported yesterday. This is a decrease of 39.1% in the rolling 7-day average. both deaths were in England.
Testing – Not updated at weekends.
Hospitalisations – Not updated at weekends.
Vaccinations – As of 8 May, a total of 35,371,669 people had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 17,669,379 people had had both. In percentage terms this means that 67.2% of all adults in the UK have had 1 shot and 33.5% were fully vaccinated.

Here’s a question: is there any reason that people can’t get two vaccines? For example, if they vaccinate with Sinopharm and then a year later get Pfizer or Moderna, is there any problem with that? I realize that it is twice the work and greater expense and time, of course.
WaterGirl
@Suzanne: I’m sure there will be testing related to booster shots in the fall, or next year. But I sure wouldn’t double vaccinate now. I am not a scientist, but I can think of at least a couple of potential bad outcomes from doing that.

PM Muhyiddin Yassin has declared all of Malaysia under the strictest level of movement control orders from 12th May to 7th Jun. No gatherings for Eid, no visiting of family members’ graves, congregations for Eid prayers this Thursday limited to 50 people in big mosques (i.e. those with capacity over 1,000) and to 20 people in smaller mosques. No crossing state or district borders. No dine-in at restaurants either, only takeaway permitted.

Now I think about, Jesus Christ on that Johnson quote, 3,000 is the number of people who die every week in the US from COVD. What the fuck is wrong with that boy’s head? If him and GOPer circle jerk buddies were willing to sacrifice 2% of the population over three years in the name of herd immunity, a vaccine that only kills less that a percent of that and the return to normalcy in three months should be a god send in their book.

Scotland — 168 new cases of COVID-19 and zero deaths reported. Test positivity rate is creeping up, 1.6% of those tested were positive. These numbers are likely affected by some reporting offices being closed at the weekend. Tuesday’s numbers will be more representative.
Vaccination numbers are down, 11,000 first vaccinations and 17,000 second vaccinations in Scotland over the past 24 hours, as of this morning. It may be that vaccine supplies are becoming limited due to the international situation — the available data I’ve seen suggests PHS tries to keep a buffer of between 300,000 to 500,000 doses (allocated by the UK government) in case there are severe shortages. There have been no news reports that supplies are being constricted at the moment but Britain made an early start in its vaccination program and so we had easy access to supplies to begin with and this may make our early vaccination rates look better.
Sloane Ranger
@Robert Sneddon:
This might be the case, alternatively, now we are vaccinating 40 pluses, I did wonder if there was less urgency or interest among that age group to get the vaccine. After all they’ve been told they are at less risk of dying or getting seriously ill from COVID.
