Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Second rate reporter says what?

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

When I was faster i was always behind.

We still have time to mess this up!

All through the W years I was stressing out because so many seemed utterly oblivious to the dangers the Republican party kept delving into. Our elastic concept of middle class kept so many in a coma of complacency; seeing their struggles as individual, as the Rs intended.

At least that fever has been broken.

Malaysia’s Director-General of Heath Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reports 3,973 new Covid-19 cases today in his media statement, for a cumulative reported total of 448,457 cases. He also reports 22 new deaths today, for a cumulative total of 1,722 deaths — 0.38% of the cumulative reported total, 0.42% of resolved cases.

Monday in the UK we had 2357 new cases. This is an INCREASE in the rolling 7-day average of 3.1%. Hopefully, just a blip, we’ll see over the next few days. New cases by nation,

    England – 2009 (up 591)

    Northern Ireland – 76 (down 22)

    Scotland – 168 (down 32)

    Wales – 104 (up 50).

Deaths – There were 4 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 33.3% in the rolling 7-day average.. All 4 deaths were in Wales.

Testing – A total of 1,322,338 tests were administered on Sunday, 9 May. This is an increase of 8.9% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacity estimated by labs on this date was 648,153.

Hospitalisations – Not updated since 6 May.

Vaccinations – As of 9 May, a total of 35,472,295 people had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 17,856,550 had got both. In percentage terms this means that 67.3% of all adults in the UK have had 1 shot of a vaccine and 33.9% were fully vaccinated.

General – Boris Johnson announced yesterday that there would be a further relaxation of restrictions in England from this coming Monday. Among other things, this means that people will be able to go to a cinema, drink indoors in pubs and meet in larger groups outdoors. Social distancing remains in place as a general rule but there has been some relaxation in requirements in mask wearing for schoolchildren. He added a warning that the virus was still out there and people should be careful about exercising any of these new found freedoms. Given the rise in the rolling 7-day average for case counts I hope this is not a mistake. OTOH, a friend of mine, who spent her working life in Public Health, told me that if the vaccination programme is working, she expected to see a rise in cases when restrictions were relaxed but this would not be coupled with a rise in hospitalisations or deaths. We’ll see.

We can deal with endemic. Measles, rubella, influenza, polio (grrr… so close), et cetera are all endemic, and manageable with vaccines.  But I agree with the sentiment in this XKCD.

Scotland — the numbers today were delayed by network problems but they’re now available.

238 new cases of COVID-19 were reported with again zero deaths. The test positivity rate remains at around 1.7%. There were about 40,000 vaccinations carried out, mostly second vaccinations.

Tomorrow the National Records of Scotland (NRS) will release their weekly report of death certificates which mention COVID-19 as a contributory cause of death. This number is always greater than the daily PHS figure since that only represents the number of people who have died having been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the previous 28 days.

The move to reopen Scotland continues with a relaxation of the lockdown rules beginning next Monday 17th May. The exception is the Moray region in the north of Scotland which is still showing a distressingly high number of cases. It is responsible for about 10% of all COVID-19 cases in Scotland over the past week despite having only 2% of Scotland’s population. For this reason Moray will stay in partial lockdown for at least another two weeks and maybe more.

I have a question about what will happen when everyone who wants a vaccination in the US has had one.

After that point, if an unvaccinated person falls sick and is hospitalised, will their health insurance cover the hospital costs? Why would they pay when they can just say, you have this virus through choice so it’s not our problem?
