Several weeks ago, the nest that stayed all winter was torn down and then… it was not rebuilt. I threw up a bunch of ferns to make the porch more inviting, moved another feeder out front, and… nothing. I began to worry- where are my birds? Were the ferns too small? Did the black snake under my porch (it’s a biggun) scare them off? WHERE ARE MY BIRDS?
I am pleased to report that when I went to Lowe’s today for more soil, I saw a bird fly out of the ferns. I went over, checked, and sure enough there are five tiny eggs in a petite little nest. So it looks like at least one more generation of birds.
I’m very excited. I was filing the birdfeeders and putting out suet this evening, and momma sat in the wire and sassed me until I left. So we have healthy eggs and an alert mom. And that is good. I’ll take some pictures in a couple days.
I was actually suffering in silence, really upset that my house was being shunned, so this came as such a relief.

I sent Cheryl and Betty a funny kookaburra video earlier today on Twitter but that’s all the bird I have.
Here are some very dramatic dogs to make up for the lack of aviary fun.
(Dog who can’t howl is hilarious)

@HumboldtBlue: I keep meaning to send this boxer video to Betty; it cracks me up:

They heard you were thinking of encouraging crows to come to your house.

And it begins:

@Mary G:
That’s making a splash!

Yay!

@Mary G: Crap, I hope the smoke stays away from Joshua Tree tomorrow night.

Yay for the grandbirds! Will you still be able to get a spyeye in there amongst the ferns without spooking the parents?
@HumboldtBlue: Those are all marvelous, but I think my fave is the first one, the dog doing a full body plant into the bushes, and wagging her (?) tail when Mom laughs.
@Mary G: “I wanted a dramatic, glorious sea to jump into, but what do the humans provide? A kiddie wading pool!… I’m doing my Grand Jete anyway.”

@Mary G: Now that is a raincoat!
(I totally want one!)

The kid posted a video with the caption, “My neighbors have taken up gardening”, two pot plants.

Won’t the snake eat everything?

@Origuy:
Yeah. I’m thinking the front potch birbs and crows might not be a good mix.

No boundaries!

@Mary G: I’m missing the working collectively part, but that bunny bandit is definitely BUSTIN’ OUTTA HERE! YA SEE? NAAAWWW!!!

maybe if the ferns make you throw up, you should not eat them in the first place ..
definitely cool the birbs came back…

This is so awesome, John. Congratulations for setting up an AirBnB for your birbs. I have spent way too much time lately looking for, trying to photograph, and identify birds, I fear I’ve gone down the slippery slope to being a birder. But hey, it’s something to do to get me outside. And some of them look really cool (I’m looking at you, Painted Bunting, that didn’t show up in Florida or Texas … maybe next year!)

@Mary G: Great advice! Presented very well, indeed.

We’ve got a robin’s nest from last year built in a great spot between a downspout and a wall, up under the eaves. Supposedly they don’t reuse them but we had two broods in there last year so we’re hoping for some new tenants soon.

Awe???
Raven
Off to the boat!
Geminid
@Raven: Glad somebody’s fishing. Good luck!
Raven
@Geminid: it took forever to get this 10hr. I tried for 3 days and they were supposed to call me yesterday and didn’t. I called after hours and they said, oh you are booked! I guess if I had not called them they would have charged me $425 as a no show! Now I’m breathlessly waiting to see if Lyft shows!
Johnny's mom
That is good news. So glad to hear your grandbirbies are on their way.

I am jealous. We used to have house wrens nest in our porch eaves every year. Last year a rat snake crawled up one of our porch columns and got the baby birds in the nest. Stayed up there for 3 days after feasting. After it left I scrubbed the heck out of the spot, hoping to get rid of snake smell and keeping fingers crossed that the event would be forgotten by this spring. Nothing doing – no wrens this year :(

So please don’t invite crows anywhere near them. By near I mean 100 miles.

I have a bird’s nest in a similar place right outside a family room window.It’s under the roof right by a downspout. Alas, no birds have taken up residence this year. I’ve read the same thing that birds don’t reuse nests but I had a robin family two years in a row. The birds built another nest right on top of the old one so technically I guess they didn’t reuse it. I had left it up in case any birds wanted to use it, it’s in a great place, but I’ll take it down now.
I do have some small birds that have built a nest in some decorative molding right over our front door. House wrens maybe? I don’t put up bird feeders anymore because mine were always raided by raccoons.@John Revolta:

Maybe This will be the summer that Cole has babby birbs in his beard.
