Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Petty moves from a petty man.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Be a wild strawberry.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

This really is a full service blog.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

So many bastards, so little time.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

That Time of Year

Steve got his lion cut today, and as usual made an enormous production and screamed venomous thoughts at me the whole ride there, pooped on the groomer, and then pissed the crate when he was done, but now he is at home and a little pensive and subdued:

That Time of Year

Please tell him he is amazing and a very good boy to cheer him up.

Tell him it could be worse.  When our cat got a lion cut, they shaved her tail too, leaving a little ball of fur at the end. I thought she would hate it, but she loved it. Burrs slid right off, no longer matting her long, fine, fur, and she was cool in the heat of the summer.

@prostratedragon: My big Akbash was regularly shaved twice a year due to way too much fur.  She loved it because she could actually feel us petting her.  She would come and push up against me and almost knock me off my feet to get her pets.
ETA: Steve is handsome with or without fur.

Please tell him he is amazing and a very good boy to cheer him up.

He is handsome and amazing and an exceptionally fine cat, but he was not a good boy.  However much he appreciates the comfort of his cut, the indignity of being shaved is something he is compelled to protest, and it really looks like he knows his efforts in that regard were a bit over the top.  Just tell him his apology is accepted and give him his favorite food for dinner.

How cute!  My current rescue kitty has now become a prima donna when I take her to the vet.  She meows piteously, tries to bolt, and ultimately starts panting.  She also flees in terror at the slightest prospect of drops of water from the kitchen sink or shower.

All this from a cat who was dumped outside during winter and was utterly skinny with eyes crusted over when rescued. Instead of creating a tough cookie, this experience apparently created the most sensitive princess. Who knew it was in her?

Steve, you are amazing and gorgeous, and a Very Good Boy.  ::cuddles::

Penny is a little Domestic Shorthair tabby, but I recently had a bout of illness that resulted in her getting spattered.  I had to chase her down and clean her off, poor thing.  She squirmed away, and I worried she was pissed off at me.  But as I lay down to try to calm my stomach, she got on the bed, lay beside me, and pressed up as closely to me as she could.  Cats resent baths, but they forgive once they realize how comfortable they are again.

My condolences to the groomers.  Hope you tipped them well!

I’m sorry to rain on the parade of “Steve is planning revenge” but John’s description of his actions sounds like a scared cat, not a pissed-off one. Losing control of his bowels is a sign of fear, guys. I’m sure he’s happy and relieved to be home again, and will be much more comfortable in his new cute cut.  He looks wonderful.  Thanks for taking such good care of him, John.

Our meankitty was walking around with the fur on her spine standing up straight today, and the blind cat was standing on the sofa and yowling, so I checked and the Feliway diffusers were out of juice. So diffusers refilled and the cats are all asleep.

Oh Steve is the most gorgeous boy! My wee cat Cassie needs to go for her checkup/jags every year, which means she loses one-third of her body weight that week, because in the car  she drools in terror for 25 miles. The vet staff are amazing – taking her in to clean her up before examination , esp. these past two years when everyone’s on lockdown. So far she continues to have a good bill of health at 12 years old.  So glad to read about other jackals’ cats, so glad to read about so many jackals that love their cats and dogs

    @MattF:

    Cats are tough.

Physics.  Weight, surface area, drag, and terminal velocity.  Almost all squirrels survive falls from heights and scamper away.  Humans die gruesomely.  Cats as a species are right on the border — some survive, some don’t.

We have to take both cats in for annual checkups.  Our current batch are terrors at being out in the carriers and riding in the car.

    And did I mention bleeding?

    Not them…

Where do we get cat proof chain mail or full upper leather protection?  How about Fancy Feast Knockout?  Trank darts?

Did I mention dread?  Did I mention IV drip antibiotic sessions in my past?
