Well, I’m officially a slacker. Someone not only saved democracy by working to elect Democrats in Georgia, but she also wrote another novel. (She’s on Lawrence O’Donnell right now)
Also – if you have MSNBC, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett will be his guest tonight – I’m recording it so I can watch later…I’ve had enough news for today.
From celebrated national leader and bestselling author Stacey Abrams, While Justice Sleeps is a gripping, complexly plotted thriller set within the halls of the U.S. Supreme Court.
“Brilliant and mesmerizing. Abrams follows in Dan Brown’s footprint with this masterfully plotted thriller that unfolds like the ultimate chess match—bold move to bolder move with lives hanging in the balance.”—Lisa Gardner
“Stacey Abrams is a true novelist, and While Justice Sleeps is a first-class legal thriller, favorably compared to many of the best, starting with The Pelican Brief, which it brings to mind. It’s fast-paced and full of surprises—a terrific read.”—Scott Turow
Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk for the legendary Justice Howard Wynn, is doing her best to hold her life together—excelling in an arduous job with the court while also dealing with a troubled family. When the shocking news breaks that Justice Wynn—the cantankerous swing vote on many current high-profile cases—has slipped into a coma, Avery’s life turns upside down. She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney. Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery finds that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court—a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field. She also discovers that Wynn suspected a dangerously related conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington.
As political wrangling ensues in Washington to potentially replace the ailing judge whose life and survival Avery controls, she begins to unravel a carefully constructed, chesslike sequence of clues left behind by Wynn. She comes to see that Wynn had a much more personal stake in the controversial case and realizes his complex puzzle will lead her directly into harm’s way in order to find the truth. While Justice Sleeps is a cunningly crafted, sophisticated novel, layered with myriad twists and a vibrant cast of characters. Drawing on her astute inside knowledge of the court and political landscape, Stacey Abrams shows herself to be not only a force for good in politics and voter fairness but also a major new talent in suspense fiction.

There was an excerpt in Vanity Fair. It was pretty intriguing.

Stacey Abrams Is brilliant and wonderful and I’m sure this book is too, but right now I am not emotionally in a place where I can read a political book about SCOTUS. Maybe when the ideologues on the court are gone, if we still have a country by then.

In a literal case of “Let’s you and him fight!”, the increasingly odd Ted Cruz challenges 71 YO actor Ron Perlman to wrestling match with addle-pated animated garden gnome Gym Jordan

@Steve in the ATL:
I think that’s why I didn’t rush out to buy it.

@Steve in the ATL: I put a sample on my Kindle – that may be as far as I get…feel much as you do.

No kidding. I’d bet there’s way more of us in the same place than in any other.

Knowing nothing about this, and seeing only the title of the book, I didn’t expect it to be fiction

Someone should put the Four Corners thermometer in a nearby previous thread over the top. I made a small contribution to make it $100 from the goal. Think of the glory of being the one who puts it over the goal.

Stacey Abrams was on “Ellen” earlier this week. As I understood it, the book was started years ago. She finally finished it.

@Steve in the ATL: I agree. I really want to read one of her books, but not on the Supremes. Not now.

Sounds like a good book to read on our weekend getaway in a few weeks. Wonder if when I read it I’ll envision the narrative in Stacy’s voice or the protagonist’s.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
That happened last summer – the tweet is from 6/14/20.

The Pelican Brief remains one of my favorite books. Now, I’m intrigued! I wonder if Costco has Stacey’s book. I’ll find out tomorrow!

I’ve taken to downloading the MSNBC evening shows as podcasts. That way I can listen when I walk my dog or walk to work. Lawrence O’Donnell is one I really try to catch along with Rachel Maddow.

@Mary G:
Just saw that linked on the book of faces. Good stuff!

@Steve in the ATL: There’s so much talk of having a country or saving democracy. Whenever I read these I feel a sense of personal dread and fear for my neighbors. Will the future bring incarceration for trans people and people who rise up to protect them? Will police violence against black and brown people, and “asians” escalate? If the right wing gains control what will they do those of us who object?
Democracy and the rule of law are high level concepts until you are subject to the worst that society can dole out. And if you’re not first in line what does that do to your sense of security, your soul?

The Barbarian and I are in our last week of serious pandemic isolation. We see the old gaming crew this weekend. During the pandemic we have been watching various 20th-century TV shows, including Babylon 5. We just reached the episode with the deadly plague, drafa. There’s nothing like being in isolation during a plague watching people in isolation dying of a plague.

LOL Perlman would fuck Cruz and Gym up at the same time.
montanareddog
LOL. I am not sure that that is as complimentary as Ms Gardner intended

@montanareddog: Unless, it was a compliment in the spirit of “you have Van Gogh’s ear for music”
Bruce K in ATH-GR
@AxelFoley: Yeah, that happened several months ago, and as I recall, wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista offered to stand in for Ron Perlman in that fight, at which point I think Tailgunner Ted shut up and went on to his next bit of idiocy.

@montanareddog: exactly!

Have a copy on my iPad. Will start it later today, when I am fully bounced back from this morning’s speed-date with general anesthesia.
