So the lead on the magazine Scientific American is what will be the next Pandemic. Fungus infections. The worse part is – as we are seeing in India – it has already started. The problem is fungi have gotten a foothold and develop immunity to our handful of drugs because modern medicine is too good. Immune compromised people are now surviving in large numbers thanks to the array of drugs that protect these people from bacteria. But this makes them open to fugus infections, which too many contracted. Over the years this has allowed fungi to develop the ability to defeat the tiny handful of anti-fungi drugs we have. So now the world is wide open for these devastating pathogens to run ramped once anyone’s own immune system is weaken by a simple illness or not so simple.
Welcome to the new world

Sunday in the UK we had 2235 new cases. This is an increase of 11.3% in the rolling 7-day average. This is probably an undercount, due to weekend reporting delays. New cases by nation,
England – 1734 (down 508)
Northern Ireland – 77 (down 5)
Scotland – 378 (up 8)
Wales – 46 (Wales does not report on Saturday’s).
Deaths – There were 5 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 43.2% in the rolling 7-day average. 3 deaths were in England and 2 in Wales.
Testing – Not updated at weekends.
Hospitalisations – Not updated at weekends.
Vaccinations – As of 22 May a total of 37,943,681 people had received the 1st dose of a vaccine and 22,643,417 had received both. In percentage terms this means that 72% of all adults in the UK have had 1 shot and 43% were fully vaccinated.
Robert Sneddon
Scotland — 313 new cases reported, no new deaths, test positivity rate is up to 2.8%. There were some IT problems this weekend again so the numbers may not be complete. Hospitalisations and ICU occupancy numbers are creeping up slowly but they’re not anywhere near becoming a serious problem in terms of capacity. Yet.
Vaccinations in the past 24 hours are a little down at about 36,000 with second doses predominating as usual. The slight drop in numbers is normal on weekends. The Scottish government is pushing hard to get people to turn up to get vaccinated when appointments are made but there are some indications more and more people are not attending when asked to do so. There could be different reasons for this, from the difficulty of getting to some vaccination centres especially at weekends when public transport is not available, problems with rescheduling an appointment and of course vaccine hesitancy.

Minnesota is planning on running its State Fair this year (end of August through Labor Day) which is far too soon in my opinion. It puts about half of the state population into a small area, and then there are visitors and vendors from out of state as well.
