I need an antidote to what feels like all the negative and infuriating political news I have seen over the past week.

This first picture makes me feel better; every day I am grateful for these two senators, and not just because they got us the majority.

Proud to stand alongside my brother & fellow Senator, @SenOssoff, at the White House yesterday to watch @POTUS sign the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act into law. pic.twitter.com/WqsKO7eWzc

It’s clear that Jon Ossoff did more in one week than any Republican senator has done in one year.

Take 2 minutes and 48 seconds to watch the video.

That’s a great little video.  I hope other senators and representatives are doing similar things – it’s important that people see what they’re doing and how it matters.

    Thanks.

@Another Scott: Well, the battery plant is not without it’s problems

A FOX 5 I-Team investigation has raised questions over who’s currently benefiting from a $2.6 billion factory under construction in Jackson County.

Korean-owned SK Innovation chose Georgia after receiving one of the biggest tax relief packages our state has ever awarded: around $300 million in tax abatements and grants.

SK Battery America is building what will eventually be a $2.6 billion factory that will employ 2600 workers.

Sign up for FOX 5 email alerts

Jackson County donated the land for the plant. SK Battery America is a subsidiary of SKI.

When it’s finished in 2022, SK Battery America promised 2,600 people will eventually be hired to build batteries for electric cars.

    But that’s when it’s finished.

“Georgians have gotten the shaft over the SKI battery plant,” complained David Cagle with the Georgia Local Union 72 of plumbers, pipefitters, and HVACR technicians.

Cagle said when his people tried applying for the construction jobs to build the plant itself, they were told nothing was available.

“We’ve got about 500 people out of work right now who could come up here and be on this job and making a living,” he said. “Instead, the Koreans are making a living.”

Prosecutor in Trump criminal probe convenes grand jury to hear evidence, weigh potential charges

Manhattan’s district attorney has convened the grand jury that is expected to decide whether to indict former president Donald Trump, other executives at his company or the business itself should prosecutors present the panel with criminal charges, according to two people familiar with the development.
The panel was convened recently and will sit three days a week for six months. It is likely to hear several matters — not just the Trump case — during the duration of its term, which is longer than a traditional New York state grand-jury assignment, these people said. Like others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. Generally, special grand juries such as this one are convened to participate in long-term matters rather than to hear evidence of crimes charged routinely.
The move indicates that District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.’s investigation of the former president and his business has reached an advanced stage after more than two years. It suggests, too, that Vance believes he has found evidence of a crime — if not by Trump then by someone potentially close to him or by his company

Finally got together with two of the guys I taught with today, one of whom is retired, the other has a long fifteen years to go. We made these plans last week for yesterday but I had (temporarily) forgotten yesterday was our wedding anniversary so we amended our plans to today.

A scenic place in a marina on the St. John’s River. Fish were jumping’, turtles were turtling but saw no gators. Almost everything we wanted was out…”a freezer broke down…truck couldn’t fit into loading bay…thing, thing, thing…”.  And guess what? We didn’t care.  It had been over fifteen months since our last live meeting and it was bliss.

I brought home a sandwich and onion rings for mrs. cope and chicken nuggets for the pup. For the time being, all is well in copeland.

In an outlandish turn of events, Paul linked Marx’s dismissive social media barb to the potentially dangerous package, which according to Fox News contained an image of the senator in a neck brace, wearing a cast, using a crutch and with a gun to his head.

    May 25, 2021 at 5:52 pm

As some of you might remember, mr hitchhiker and I became grandparents on the day of the Capitol Riot. (Our younger daughter delivered brother/sister twins that morning.) They’ll be five months old soon, and are in the phase of life that involves discovering how to connect intent (sucking my fingers feels good and I want to do it) with execution (this movement brings my hand to my mouth, every time!) They’ve learned to laugh. Their crying now comes with actual tears. They go down for naps wide awake without complaint. I love them.

They’re a ferry ride away. We go to spend the day with them once a week, bringing various food and whatnot. I like to make giant batches of cookies. Mr h is into elaborate breakfast wraps meant to give the young parents grab-and-go breakfast for days when they’re too addled to cook.

So far, thanks to WA state’s family leave policy, one of them is able to stay home with the babies on every weekday. He works 3 days, she works 2, and that will last for almost the first full year if they want it to. Childcare for infant twins is not cheap, and since neither of them are in high-salary jobs, this really, really matters.

Our daughter apparently possesses superhuman powers, because she’s successfully nursing them both and plans to keep that up at least another month, and maybe right through their first year. It was rough going for awhile, but now they’re all on cruise with it.

I think that without these small humans to keep me in a more-or-less continuous state of wonder and gratitude, the time since the riot would have felt almost intolerable … I do keep up with news, but it’s rare that it overwhelms me the way it was especially in the first trump years.

Another time I’ll tell you the saga of our older daughter’s attempt to become a mom. It’s astonishing to us all, but she is now expecting a son in December … which is to say I get to keep living this dream for some time to come.

    That’s my antidote!

I don’t even remember what those targets were, just that the state was paying over $100k per very, very dubious job.

Batteries are a growth business and a South Korean manufacturer having factories in the US at least sounds plausible, considering a possible desire to sell to US automobile manufacturers. The Foxconn deal never sounded anything more than a scam to me.

So people got all pissy when I posted an article about my friends because Nancy got shorted. Here’s a better article about two swell people.

While only native to Athens since 2006, Nancy and Charlie have each fully embraced what it means to be a local Athenian. They make their home on Pulaski Street, and you’ve likely heard wonderful melodies drifting down through Pulaskiville, as they call it, from their front porch sessions. Nancy and Charlie are a uniquely wonderful pair who came to Athens to visit first as a new couple in hopes of gaining a few weeks of creative solitude, only to return 6 months later, married, with a house on Pulaski waiting for them. Charlie, a native Georgian, returned to his Southern roots, and this time brought along with him his Pacific Northwestern wife – Nancy. Together, they spend their days writing, singing, and playing music – knee-to-knee – for the neighborhood to hear. This is their story.

Five and a half! How marvelous for you that they’re close enough to be part of everything.

I have a brother who is 9 years younger than me, and he married a woman about 15 years younger than himself. They have four kids, widely spaced out.

Our mom spent the last 10 years or so of her very long life in his house, happily surrounded by growing grandchildren to the end. She told me once that if the noise and chaos got annoying, she’d just remove her hearing aids and read for a while.

I am still (hopefully) a decade or two away from being unable to live on my own, but I find myself thinking of her and being glad it worked out that way. There’s nothing quite like watching babies turn into children.

FYI. Gonna be a while yet; getting the ball rolling a positive development.

Offshore wind is headed west. The Biden administration announced today that it will open up parts of the Pacific coast to commercial-scale offshore renewable energy development for the first time. The geography of the West Coast poses huge technical challenges for wind energy. But rising to meet those challenges is a big opportunity for both President Joe Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom to meet their clean energy goals.
    [snip]
The Department of Energy says that it has funneled more than $100 million into moving floating offshore wind technology forward. There are only a handful of floating turbines in operation today, and no commercial-scale wind farms yet anywhere in the world.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management still needs to officially designate the areas off the California coast as Wind Energy Areas for development and complete an environmental analysis. The plan is to auction off leases for the area to developers in mid-2022. It’s also working with the Department of Defense to make sure the projects don’t interfere with its ongoing “testing, training, and operations” off California’s coast. Source

    Lots of anniversaries going on…

We went out for dinner for the first time since fall of 2019 last week… it was our 50th wedding anniversary. Then last Saturday we went next door to eat dinner and drink a whole lot with neighbors. Wonderful, Hugs, home made pizza and champagne.

Since we only had to drive down their driveway to our driveway, then up our driveway, we felt like we could drink ALL the wine.

    Whooot.

And now a grand jury is hearing evidence in re The Trump Org… Whoooot!
