I'll point out that in Russia, where fans booed when Belgians took the knee, pretty much all of the media and officials have excused this behavior by saying "They boo this in England, too! Everyone is sick and tired of this."
Well, then. How to tell on yourself in Russian. https://t.co/to5qqdFu9z— Slava Malamud (@SlavaMalamud) June 19, 2021

How come UK gets three teams when it is one kingdom?
terben
@sab: Another way of looking at it is….. How come the UK has to divide its talent four ways? How good would the UK be if anyone from those four countries could play for the one team?
Duke of Clay
@sab: This was done at the insistence on the non-UK countries when they were first setting up international competition. It was thought that allowing the UK to have a single team drawn from all four “nations” would result in the UK always winning everything.

Germany v Portugal yesterday was a wild game. Hoping for some excitement in today’s fixtures, but I have a feeling that Italy v Wales could be a bit sleepy as a draw works nicely for both teams and Turkey has been awful throughout the tournament so far.

Of course the fans booed in St. Petersburg. Those folks are racist af. Zenit (the pro team in St. Petersburg) fans have been known to throw bananas at their own African players.

Ulster didn’t miss qualifying by much. These days, they’re better than the Republic of Ireland. And their women’s team is getting better in a hurry.

@sab:
Interestingly, it’s the UK team that qualified for the Olympics while it’s England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales that compete individually to try and get into the World Cup.
Am certain it’s complicated.

@trollhattan: but it’s become so ingrained, that at the 2012 london games, the uk’s automatic bids in men’s & women’s soccer were negotiated internally to ensure no scots or irish.
i do remember the absolute legend ryan giggs repping the uk as a welshman since the home olympics were his only chance to play internationally in a major tournament.

SHAQ ATTACK! Switzerland 3 – Turkey 1 on a Shaquiri brace (two-goal match).
It may be enough to land the Swiss one of the 4 third-place spots in the round of 16. a negative one goal differential isn’t horrible and the next tie-breaker is goals scored. And their four goals (three from SHAQ!) may just be enough.
