This made me smile on what has been a sad day at the blog.
(Also: Beethoven had it coming, ya follow?)
The thread. It is open. In particular, though, any truly wacky musical links gratefully appreciated.
ETA: Twitter friend (and real-life science engagement colleague) John Dupuis sent me this to come at the same experience from a different angle:
Sharing is caring, amirite?

Elsewhere in the world of classical music, star violinist/conductor Pinchas Zukerman is a racist prick.

Zoomer daughter turned me onto Bo Burnham’s ‘Inside’ special on Netflix and it really struck me. He’s a musical comedian who started on Youtube, who is now 30. It’s a one-man show about his anxiety and struggle dealing with the pandemic, and what the internet as the only way to interact is doing to us. It’s both funny and hard-hitting, and the songs are fun.
I’ve known about the work he’s done when he was younger, and it’s clever and funny, but didn’t have the emotional catch that this does. It’s excellent
Nice review of the special.

The Heimatdamisch group (“the natives/the locals”) are impressive — props to the trumpeter for keeping up that particular riff through so many measures.
I was a little puzzled about where the vocal harmonies were coming from, however.

Also, too: Michael Gordon’s symphonic work “Rewriting Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony”:

The Beatles 1962 Decca audition
Their song selection is representative of what was popular at the time, but very little hint of the pop musical revolution to come.

A love song for those torn apart by day’s events.

I follow Sabine Hossenfelder, a German theoretical physicist, on youtube for her “Science without the gobbledygook” explainer videos. She also does music videos. They are exactly like you would expect a German theoretical physicist’s music videos to be like.
Here’s her “I Saw the Future” – a riff on “The Last Question” by Isaac Asimov.

Highly recommend the AppleTV doc “1971.” Has an interesting premise in that, although most cultural historians say music of a particular period is driven by the events of the time, 1971 was a rare year in which music drove the events. Really, really good stuff.

@Martin: My Zoomer aged daughter introduced me to this a couple of days ago. It is excellent! The song about the internet captures our current reality well.

Here’s a video from a group I really like, La Santa Cecilia. Mexican music that’s a little different from the usual mariachis. The lead singer’s voice is sublime. Forgive the Facebook link. https://fb.watch/6q40KrLr5O/

@geg6:
I watched that and also recently read the book Never a Dull Moment: 1971 The Year Rock Exploded. I can’t put any single year as The Year because there are quite a few really good ones, ’64 & ’75 are two of my favorites. But 1971 was a great year. Some of the most significant albums in the history of rock and roll, broadly defined.
I’m sure I never got close to seeing that many really great concerts in any other year.

Met the Cole mandate of “substantive and witty”, Tom.
Especially enjoyed the “Sweet Child” cover.
Kept expecting the bodyslappers to break into “We Will Rock You”.

My dearest friend in the whole wide world since I was a foolish young virgin is still in the midst of a debulking surgery and hipec chemo for what was initially misdiagnosed as ovarian cancer. I simply cannot imagine a world without this woman who has been a lodestar for the entirety of my “real life.” This is one really hard Monday.

@raven: man, I’m never going to live down admitting I hadn’t heard of Elvin until that George T. video!
Thanks!

Walking through the house today, demon kitty kept running up to me. He kept sitting up on his hind legs, wanting attention. I scritched his forehead a few times, but he claws severely when he is bored, so I cut of all contact after a couple of friendly scritches. I feel bad for him. He needs love and attention.

Just found out my new metal fave, Plush, is the opener for Halestorm and Evanescence in Detroit in December and I am over the moon excited about it. And I’ve had tix for almost a month, and was already pumped up for it.
ETA: Also scored seats for Lindsey Stirling in August, just before Green Day and Fallout Boy on the Hella Mega tour, and is this what life was like before the ‘rona?? Now just gotta get The Pretty Reckless to make the jump, but that won’t be until ’22. Le sigh.

I had run across the Heimatdamish group already, because I watch a LOT of German popular and folk music videos, due to life long immersion in German language and culture.
But if you REALLY want to see a sample of German folk culture at its best (sic… your mileage may vary), go to YouTube and search on this video:
Die Twinnies – Bayernmädels – 2 Girls playing steirische harmonika on rollerskates
You will thank me later.

@James E Powell: I like that she has this musical alter ego. I don’t follow or subscribe to her channel, but her physics vids get recommended to me when I’m on a YouTube science bender. In most of her vids the singing is passable, but I saw one a couple years ago the was horrid. I can’t find it now, but she was dressed up like some sort of weird priestess. It was painful.
xjmuellerlurks
@HeartlandLiberal: I love them skating around the beer hall while playing accordions and singing. I saw this a couple years ago and thought it was a hoot. Great recommendation.
