Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Come on, man.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Republicans in disarray!

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Everybody saw this coming.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

In my day, never was longer.

Let there be snark.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Artificial Intelligence & You: The Latest In Text Generation

by Major Major Major Major|  June 29, 20211:54 pm| 117 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Science & Technology, Tech News and Issues

(Mandatory disclaimer: I generated this text in part with GPT-3, OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model. Upon generating draft language, I reviewed, edited, and revised the language. I take ultimate responsibility for the content of this post.)

In late 2019, I wrote a post expressing some concerns around AI-generated text and the potential for manipulating the infosphere. The technology available at the time was pretty good, but not quite there yet. Well, we’re even closer now. I recently got API access to the next generation of this model, known as GPT-3, and it’s a doozy.

I’ll let the AI tell you some of the concerns it has about its kind. The seed text is in bold.

Content generated by AI has a number of benefits and drawbacks. It can dramatically improve things like translation and chat bots, but also raises concerns about propaganda and media manipulation. Most recently, AI was used to create a fake video of former president Barack Obama speaking at a rally.

The system works by using a neural network to analyse a corpus of videos of Obama. It then learns how to mimic his gestures and voice and is then able to generate videos of Obama saying things he never actually said. The system is also able to generate more realistic videos of other people by analysing their speeches and facial movements.

The researchers behind the AI, from the University of Washington, said that the system allows anyone to “create and manipulate video footage of public figures saying things they never said.”

While it is possible to detect this type of manipulation, it is difficult.

The fake Obama video was unveiled at the beginning of this month and has been widely used to illustrate the dangers of fake news. It was picked up by news outlets including the BBC, CNBC, and Buzzfeed. CNN also aired the fake Obama video during a segment in which the network discussed the potential impact of fake news.

Not everyone is convinced that AI is the culprit. Some people have pointed out that it takes a lot of effort to produce the fake videos and suggests that human involvement is more likely.

Well that’s just what an AI would say, now isn’t it, GPT-3?

This does drift slightly from the prompt, but I have to say, it’s extremely impressive. This is expensive to scale–that cost me about nine cents–but lots of bad actors have deep pockets.

In my earlier post I generated two pieces of fake news. Join me below the fold as I re-run these prompts to show how this latest model compares to the earlier one.

Just a Quick Weather Related Note To Reinforce AL’s & WaterGirl’s From Earlier

by Adam L Silverman|  June 29, 20211:07 pm| 64 Comments

This post is in: Changing Climate, Climate Change, How about that weather?, Open Threads

In Ann Laurie’s post on the heat earlier this morning, she included something on rhabdomyolysis, specifically this link to The Washington Post‘s reporting on it. Specifically that people are more at risk for it now, after a year of COVID related self confinement that may have limited their physical activity combined with the exceedingly high heat in parts of the US, as well as other countries, that don’t normally see temperatures get that high.

WaterGirl’s post was about thinking about and sharing ways to stay cool for people that don’t normally live in high heat and/or high heat/high humidity places, I wanted to add a point or two on the front page.

Think of it as Silvermansplaining!!!!

Just a quick caveat, I’m not a personal trainer and I’m certainly not YOUR personal trainer, but I have been a martial arts instructor of a very cardio intensive martial art and I was teaching it in places with high heat and humidity in the summer. And while several friends who are personal trainers have encouraged me to at least get certified as a TRX trainer, I have just never gotten around to it largely because I have no interest in training people, let alone running group fitness classes. It doesn’t help that I was considering doing the certification course that would have been held nearest to me on TRX’s certification schedule in 2020…

All of the above said, pre-pandemic, I was in the gym at least four days a week for between 90 minutes and two hours at a time, doing intensive strength and cardio training. During the pandemic, I maintained my regimen using my TRX, as well as using long walks with the dogs to maintain some level of cardio intensity as I did not initially have a weight set up at home. Nor an Arc Trainer, which is my preferred cardio fitness machine. This changed several months ago in the late winter/early spring when I got a used ArcTrainer from a fitness equipment supply company that has the account for the local Planet Fitness franchise. At just about the same time I got a set of the adjustable dumbbells so I could reintroduce free weights back in to my regimen. Basically I was feeling as if I’d hit a huge wall in my exercise regimen so that even as I was maintaining a somewhat acceptable fitness level, I was treading water given the resources at hand due to the pandemic.

And here’s where we get to the details. As I’ve indicated, I basically live in a cyprus swamp/wetland that was partially reclaimed with offsets decades ago when such things were still allowed. The average high heat index here over the past month, unless it has been monsooning all day, has been in the 101 to 104 range. And I’ve learned a few things I want to share that might be helpful in dealing with the heat if you’re exercising. The first is that I’ve shifted my workout times. If I’m up and have space in the schedule, I try to get my workout in as early as I can and certainly no later than 11 AM. In the Fall, Winter, and Spring, before the heat and humidity get high again, I’d often break up the day with a 1 or 2 PM workout. Now, I try to avoid that at all costs. Especially if I’m using the TRX as the mount is over the garage door facing out, so I’m working out in the driveway in direct sunlight. And the driveway faces west, so it’s getting full summer sun for a lot of the day! So I’m either working out earlier in the day or later in the day. My weights are on my screened in back patio. So no direct sunlight, but the full effects of the heat and humidity despite the fans. The Arc Trainer lives inside where it is air conditioned.

The second thing I’ve learned is to break up the workouts. When I used the gym, the reason my workouts would take 90 to 120 minutes is I started with the weights or TRX strength training and then finished with 40 minutes to an hour of high intensity cardio on the ArcTrainer every lift day except for leg day. That’s not happening right now. As I’ve written about here before, I used a lower weight, higher rep strength training system. Basically I want to lift a decent amount of weight as many times as possible before I feel like the next rep isn’t going to be possible – as in I’d have to drop the weight. So I’m trying to work each set of reps to failure. This usually means a 12 to 16 or 18 rep set, four sets per exercise, at least three sets per muscle group being worked, per workout. Regardless of TRX or free weights. I take water between every set of reps. Each 30 second to 1 minute rest between sets of reps means hydration! While this type of lifting produces some cardio effects, the real point here is that in high heat and humidity, by the time I’m done, I’m completely done. Doesn’t matter if I’m working out in the morning or the evening, So instead of weights/TRX strength training immediately followed by cardio, I do four days of weight strength training and three days of cardio training per week. I’m not piggy backing them because it’s neither safe, nor healthy.

There are a lot of reasons to be careful when exercising in high heat and high humidity, or just doing anything strenuous in high heat and humidity, and extreme cold can be just as dangerous – I’ve shoveled my fair share of snow over the years – but trust me, you DO NOT want to over stress your system to the point of getting rhabdo! Here’s a professional bodybuilder, strength, and fitness competitor explaining just what she went through when she got rhabdo last year:

And, of course, remember to hydrate! I’m not kidding. I will go through at least one 64 ounce water bottle per workout. And that doesn’t count all the other water I’m drinking per day!

I’ll be back later with a never before told true story of Bixby sure to entertain and scandalize the Balloon Juice community, as well as give Cole dyspepsia or something…

Good news, America. “Soccer is communist” is still a go.

Just So Weird

by John Cole|  June 29, 202111:38 am| 69 Comments

This post is in: Absent Friends

My house feels so empty right now. Yes, Lily is below me in her dog bed, and Steve is behind me, but you just don’t realize what a presence an animal has until they are gone.

For the last six months, Rosie was no real joy. She was having potty issues, getting stuck everywhere, just being a general nuisance. But now that she is gone, it is dawning on me how much of my time she consumed. At least ten times today I have stopped what I was doing to listen for Rosie to see if she was in distress somewhere or couldn’t get up the stairs. I haven’t mopped once today, but I still keep turning on all the lights everywhere to make sure I have not stepped in anything. I don’t smell Murphy’s oil soap or nature’s miracle.

It hit home last night as I was getting ready for bed. I didn’t need to shut my office door so she couldn’t get stuck underneath the desk. I didn’t need to close my bedroom door so she could not pee on the floor and have me step in it first thing in the morning. And I know this sounds weird, but not having to do those things makes me sad.

I just feel like the tribe is incomplete. I wonder when I am going to be sent my next stray and what it is going to be.

A Little Scout

We’re doing okay here. I took Scout out for her first ice cream yesterday. She enjoyed it. We are just back from a very long walk to try and expend some of that Scout energy.

Thank you all for your kind words to both John and me.  I read every comment, a little at a time, because your kindness was both overwhelming and healing. Shared grief is always easier to bear. I am sorry I had to hit you with Bixby on the same day John had to let go of Rosie. I knew it would be gut-punch (reading about Rosie when I returned from the pet crematory was devastating). I almost didn’t post, but couldn’t face telling you later this week and doing the deep grief-thing all over again.

I will do my best to get you some happy ducks later this week, so we can all take a deep breath and laugh a little at their antics. Maybe I’ll be able to catch morning duck-zoomies on video.

This is an open thread to discuss whatever…I haven’t watched the news since last week, so I’m sure there’s something going on, LOL. Anyone have fun 4th plans? Do you need any cookout recipes? I can probably come up with some… ?

Hotter Than Hell, Bitch About It Here, Share Tips for Staying Cool

Share your intemperate temps and bitch all you want.  The floor is yours.

For those of you who regularly experience hot weather, even if it’s not normally this hot, please share some tips with the folks from Oregon and elsewhere who aren’t used to living with temperatures that could pass for being in hell.

Ok friends, it’s gonna be HOT in the PNW… and everywhere. So I’m going to share a few tricks to cool down that I learned growing up broke with no AC in California. Please add more if you’ve got them, every trick is worth sharing!

— Nyssa Oru (@NyssaOru) June 23, 2021

If you have any good links, please share them in the comments and I’ll add the best ones to the post itself.

Fine print: No gloating by the folks who have good weather.

*I was going to put this up yesterday, but it was a very bad day, and didn’t feel right. May today be a better day, even for everyone living with loss.
