Ian Boudreau has passed along the horrific news that long time commenter Minna Hong, aka asiangrrl, had a serious heart attack the other day and is currently in the hospital and has not woken up. That is all I know, but there is a Caring Bridge link where you can sign up for updates.

Just devastating news that I don’t even want to process right now, and I am just hoping for the best.

    I feel weird signing up on Caring Bridge, since I don’t really know Asiangrrrl (other than remembering she and Yutsano enjoyed bantering back and forth) – what is the propriety of that, does anyone know?

    Went on Caring Bridge, there is a post for her on there. Notes from her brother and updates.

    She called 911 herself and paramedics came right away so that’s better than my mind had me thinking.

    I think it’s good in some ways and possibly not so good in others. However, her brother is on there with updates, and she affected a lot of people, most of them I’d bet very positive. I am one of those. In these days of unknowns, especially about hospitalization a couple thousand miles away of someone you might know or know of, and respect, I think it’s nice to know. I’m not sure how I see it from the perspective of privacy.

    @CaseyL: Caring Bridge can be set up with a privacy mode of just those invited or in a mode for everyone who wants updates. It’s up to the family. So if it’s open for us, I think it’s okay if you’re comfortable.

    @Starfish:  She’s at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. Just to make sure things don’t get to far afield.

    Right now I’m just processing, One of the first souls who threw her virtual lusty boobs at me right after my first couple of comments here is in medical distress. I’m just barely coming to this.

    Asiangrrl would stop by occasionally and it was always so fun to hear from her–and I hope we hear from her soon. Just to clarify–per her brother’s reports, she went into cardiac arrest 3 Sept, and she called EMS herself as she felt short of breath and EMS arrived shortly thereafter–which is good.

    *Cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack (blockage of blood flow to part or much of the heart), although a heart attack can be the cause of cardiac arrest — the total loss of heart function, the heart no longer beats so blood doesn’t circulate and perfuse organs, tissue,s etc. So–hypoxia, ischemia, then reperfusion. Going by the reports, spontaneous circulation has returned but she will be getting interdisciplinary treatment for a while.

    *Identifying and treating the cause of the arrest is crucial–was it a STEMI (then will get angiography etc), pulmonary embolism, severe infection, etc.

    *Airway, hemodynamic, glycemic, neuro management is complex due to ischemia etc. It’s so wonderful that her family (and extended family here), friends, cats (I remember she likes cats) are there to support and encourage her.

    Oh, just a  sad news day all around, I did follow her on Twitter and remember with pleasure all the Republicans she threatened with her rusty pitchfork. I’m grateful that she lived in the north (I thought it was Minnesota from her nym) where there are plenty hospital beds and medical personnel who can give her the attention and care she deserves.

    I consider my internet friends as friends so I am happy to go to Caring Bridge, since her family has set it up and notified us.

    RIP Michael K. Williams as well. Omar coming.

    I remember her from a few years back and enjoyed her presence on the blog.  Like all of you, I am hoping for recovery!  As Kristine has said above, it’s been a hard year regarding family and friend health issues and the constant drum beat of climate disasters across the country as well as political dangers.

    There has been an update. They got the first responder and EMT notes. She most likely wasn’t without oxygen for as long as they thought. They had worried it was 30 minutes but it might have been less than ten. So some good news hopefully.

    They tried to take her off sedation and she didn’t react well to the reduction, so no MRI tonight. May have to check things in the morning and see what happens.

    I’m really sorry to hear this – I’ve very much enjoyed her commentary on here when she was active. I follow her on twitter – but the twitter algorithms don’t seem to like to put her comments on my timeline. Bah.
