Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Second rate reporter says what?

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

This really is a full service blog.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Fight them, without becoming them!

Sunday Evening Open Thread: We Can Hope

We're seeing the end of some things, or what I hope is the end. AOC had a great thread on this earlier today.https://t.co/KFYTKza4d4

— Cheryl Rofer (@CherylRofer) October 3, 2021

BGinCH’s weekly post is about to drop, so here’s a hopeful thread for your Off-Topic / Open Thread thoughts…

The empty posturing covered legislating, usually without too much disagreement among those who held the majority, that benefitted a small number of people and damaged the majority of voters. The reporters reported on the posturing as if it were real, aiding the looters.

— Cheryl Rofer (@CherylRofer) October 3, 2021

Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi know how to deal with real issues and how to get legislation passed. That doesn't guarantee their success. I hope they make it. They are working for the people.

Anybody see the thread by Andy Kim as well? That’s some epic shit going on by dark money. Basically Pharma is out there funding ads and what not under the cover of darkness. It’s the worst kind of shit and we need to find away to expose who gave money to that group.

There should be political consequences. I really hope Biden can get the FBI to start looking into this – I think it is a matter of national security when there is dark money polarizing the American public and we can’t have transparency.

FWIW, the sausage making that we are seeing is what legislating looks like.  We just haven’t seen it for years.  The legislature is a separate co-equal branch, not subordinates of the President.  Biden knows this.  And everyone knows how important this.  We just have to find the deal that works.

I took a long drive up to the eastern Sierra to shoot the fall color(it is only showing up above about 8500 feet) and drove a bit further to see Hot Creek in the middle of the Long Valley caldera and Mono Lake further north.

It was very smoky up there towards the afternoon.

@cain: I hope pharma is overstepping here. American taxpayers fund a good deal of their research and we’re rewarded by subsidizing the world’s lower prices.

My Medicare Part D plan, one of the cheapest because I’m not currently on any prescription drugs, is doubling their premium for 2022 with a slightly higher deductible and about the same formulary. It’s just greed.

Eventually, we’re all going to be stuck just sticking with over the counter drugs because that’s all we can afford. ::sarcasm:: Most of these corporations don’t care about long term anything – they want money now and they almost always overreach.

Rep. Gottheimer seems to have trouble with basic arithmetic. He denounces a “small faction on the far left,” but the Progressive Caucus counts nearly 100 members, while Gottheimer is one of nine centrists shrieking about a supposed broken promise.

    @Sure Lurkalot:

I really wish David Anderson would talk about Dean Baker’s ideas for moving away from a patent monopoly based pharma industry. If he has I must have missed it. DA just focuses on wanting the Feds to negotiate prices along with the option to say no. Hard politically.

I think it would be better to start with cost plus contracts for research on orphan drugs that pharma ignores. Once approved they would be generic. This would have targeted constituencies without as much push back. After proving the viability of the approach it might be easier to tackle the pharma lobby.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: We’re in Bishop now.  Great color up at Rock Creek Lake.  We hiked to Long Lake and back and it was lovely.  We got lucky that the wind cleared the smoke out last night so it was fairly clear.

    Happy birthday! Remember two things:

    1) Calories consumed on your birthday don’t count. So enjoy that third glass of wine and that second slice of cake!

    2) It’s just a number. As Satchel Paige said, “how old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?” Go forth and do fun stuff!

@UncleEbeneezer: I went to North Lake(good), Lake Sabrina(great), South Lake(good) and McGee Creek(needs time).  It was really nice in the morning, but as it turned to the evening hours and I moved further north(Hot Creek and Mono Lake) the smoke increased.

I thought of heading up to Rock Creek, but I spent a good deal of time with the lakes.  Also I was there 3 months ago.

Manchin’s memo to Schumer that Politico released a few days ago says that Manchin would not begin negotiating until October 1 so all this “Oh no, Biden is losing” stuff is very dramatic if they always knew that Manchin was going to act like this.

I’m no David Anderson, I just hope someone takes this recommendation!

Was it Katie Porter or someone else recently going through what the big pharma companies spend, and the actual R&D budget, however large, was way less than marketing? Not sure, but there’s gotta be a better way.
