It’s a relevant difference. If we were talking about a non-communicable disease, or even a disease that was just much-less communicable, we wouldn’t be resorting to vaccine mandates, even if it was harrowingly deadly.

@Mike in NC: Yep. And the pandemic will do for a lot of those. Before the pandemic, I had a car, that I basically only used to go to the grocery. But now? I get delivery. Why didn’t I before? It was cheap and easy, but I had an atavistic preference for actually picking my own veggies. After 19mo of delivery, I’ve gotten used to not doing it. And so, when my car got t-boned in a hit-and-run, I didn’t start looking to replace it. Instead, I’m just l plowing the insurance and maintenance [ok, 10% of that money] into delivery fees.

In other news, IATSE, the union of Theatrical, Motion Picture and Television technicians and other crafts, has voted overwhelmingly to authorize a nationwide strike . This vote came in response to the unsafe working conditions and excessive hours that have become standard in motion picture production . Workers are expected to go 10-12 hours between meal breaks. Turn around times between work days are dangerously short, with some techs getting only 4-5 hours of sleep between release times and call times.
There is also the issue of low pay for some crafts and streaming productions (Think Amazon, Netflix, HBO, etc. original productions. ).
For more info go to IATSE.net. The authorization vote was 98.7% of the 87% who voted. The bargaining body numbers 60,000+ members.
The ball is now in the court of the producers, who need to bargain in good faith.
Stay tuned…..

A prolonged, global outage of Facebook’s apps has the company’s engineers scrambling to fix the issue at one of its data centers in California, according to two people familiar with the situation.
The outage, which began around 11:40AM ET on Monday, has brought down all of Facebook’s apps — including Instagram and WhatsApp — globally, affecting billions of users and millions of advertisers. Inside Facebook, the outage has also broken nearly all of the internal systems employees use to communicate and work.
[snip]
Further complicating matters, the outage has broken the ability for some employees to access company buildings and conference rooms with their badges, according to The New York Times, which first reported that engineers were being dispatched to the data center. Source

The debate about abortion usually centers on the question about the personhood status of the fetus. But if the state can hijack a woman’s body and life to serve its agenda, no matter how noble, then her personhood is negated. If the decision lies in anyone’s hands other than the woman’s, she is not the sovereign subject of herself. She is reduced to less than human.

We have a wonderful local bookstore for sale, after 50 years, if anyone is interested. There are three stores, the purchase includes all inventory plus the Peterborough building. They survived the economic downturn and COVID, and outlasted one of those chain bookstores. Just thought I’d toss that out there. It’s a lovely region. He’s not in a hurry, wants to find the right buyer. I sure hope he does.

Right you are. IMHO there are too many MBAs making the decisions. They have no idea what the union members do. To them, they aren’t skilled trades people who spend years perfecting their craft. To them they are liabilities to be derided and cheated. To a person, they have no clue what the people who do the actual work go thru to bring their product to completion. So what if some Grip dies in a car wreck because he was leaving work after a 17 hour day? We can’t afford to pay the crew more and work with the Union on real safety issues. That will ruin our bottom line!!! Think of the Producers!!!
IMHO. MBAs= Soul less bastards.
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: She did mention her condition, but to use that deliberately inappropriate descriptor when “cautious” or “prudent” ::takes no effort at all:: shows what a hack she made herself out as on a national broadcast.
