    The Order of Sons and Daughters of Italians in America held their annual Columbus Day observance today at the Columbus monument in Pueblo Colorado. A few dozen attendees and about 25 protestors heard a number of speakers support preserving the legacy of Italian Americans.

    Then the local Congresswoman spoke. After touching very briefly on the importance of the federal Columbus Day holiday, motor-mouthed Lauren Boebert launched into her standard stump speech which had in it nothing whatsoever about Columbus, Italian Americans, or Indigenous Americans either.

    Pattyanne Consentino, whose grandfather helped build the monument and whose WW II veteran father was honored at a ceremony there when she was a child, was not pleased:

    “I didn’t know it was going to be like this. I came to celebrate my culture, being Italian. I didn’t come for this shit.”

    Since efforts to develop drugs for the disease have been riddled with failures and controversy, the results suggest a therapeutic approach that radically departs from the one that has dominated for three decades.

    Any new therapies are likely still years away — the study was in mice and human cells, which are often poor predictors of what will work in patients. And the researchers can’t yet explain why the drug would have the purported effects on Alzheimer’s. But the fact that bumetanide has already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration should speed up clinical testing, which the study authors are now pursuing.

    Since it’s an open thread, here’s a story about a local wingnut running for my school district’s school board:

    On Saturday, a group gathered in (town name redacted) to protest mask and COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

    They were protesting on the corner of (redacted).

    Many drivers were honking their horns in support of the protest.

    The message protestors were trying to send wasn’t that they were anti-mask or anti-vaccine.

    “It’s a choice. If you feel you want to get the vaccine or wear a mask because it is going to keep you safe, God bless. I’ll shake your hand and I’ll support you in that, and same thing with the other way around,” said Anthony Buchmann, (redacted) School Board candidate.

    They were clear: that they were not against science but believe that everyone should have the freedom to choose.

    Buchmann says if they force masks in schools, it wouldn’t stop there. Schools would start enforcing the vaccine.

    He said the school is not the ultimate authority — the parent is.

    It was as if it were written by one of the protestors. The TV news station is owned by Nexstar Media Group, if that means anything. I love how they try to portray themselves as “moderate”. This is what they think “moderate” is.

    They’re not against science! They just believe in freedom y’see; the freedom to kill other people.

    It’s funny: this Buchmann did that League of Women Voters survey. In the “priorities for the district”, he doesn’t say anything about any of this.

    What policies, if any, will you support to promote diversity and inclusion in your school district?

    Policies that will give every individual student the best opportunity of being successful I will support. Recognizing a child’s strengths earlier on can only help them as they grow. Without a doubt we need to bring classes like Home Economics, Wood Shop, etc back to the curriculum. It’s an absolute tragedy that cursive truly isn’t being taugh anymore. Kids need to learn more real life skills(i e. Count money, use a check register, manage money) rather than take classes that will do absolutely nothing for them in the real world.

    I love how he brings up that he’s an American citizen, as if that has any relevancy whatsoever. And the “real life skills” he thinks kids should know are fucking laughable. I learned how to count money in elementary school. Employers teach you how to use a cash register (also fucking lawl at that. The job of the future!). And to use his logic, isn’t it the parents’ job to teach children how to manage money? And cursive lol! I was taught how to use it and guess what? I only ever use it for my signature. Like most people.

    He tries to present himself as down to earth, but I know the real reason why he wants the “Trades” and the military to be encouraged more. It’s probably because college teaches critical thinking and exposes people to other ideas. Can’t have that!

If you’re worried about protecting your own locale, you need to avoid giving away much at all about the candidate.     I need help.  For both previous cats I used clay litter.  The new litter is called “So Phresh” — fuck me, why did I buy something with such a stupid name?  I have no idea what it’s made from.  My previous dogs and my current dog loved to eat the poop from the previous cats.  THIS DOG IS EATING THE FUCKING CLEAN NEW LITTER STRAIGHT OUT OF THE PAN.

    I am ready to kill myself.  This kitten (less than four weeks old when she came to me on 9/21/2021) has already cost me a small fortune, and I do not need to add gastro surgery for the fucking dog on top of it.

    Does anyone else’s dog eat clean clumping cat litter?  HALP

    PS – I had the bathroom blocked with cardboard boxes (cardboard is this dog’s kryptonite) with an opening big enough for tiny kitten, but the god damned dog has today decided – I discovered when I went into the bathroom and found it sprinkled liberally with kitty litter – that the siren call of this litter is so powerful it overcomes her fear of cardboard.  Ugh.

    Our pooch Ellie will eat almost anything she finds outside. We don’t have cats, though, so I can’t offer any advice there. During the cicada explosion she at a LOT of them and almost got clogged up. But it passed, so to speak.

    @Another Scott:  Thanks!  I didn’t think to look at the petco site.  I have a giant bag of clay litter in the car – I just haven’t had the oomph to haul it up to the 2nd floor.  I never used clumping litter before because of the whole dog thing but I lost my mind when kitten arrived and figured I could keep the dog out of the bathroom better than it turns out I have.

    The gate is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so that will help a lot.

    @karen marie: I have three cats and have to lug the stuff home, and then out to the dump.  I use OKO cat which is a pine based clumping litter, the fine version.  It holds up really well, doesn’t break down, doesn’t have any extra smelly stuff which I can’t stand.  Clumps well and also doesn’t stick to the sides of the damned box, so you aren’t having to clean a gunky box as often and when you do the cleaning is easier. It’s not cheap but it lasts.  I rather doubt the dog would go for it. It’s also not as heavy as clay.

    @Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): As an accountant who has to read client handwritten notes I totally hate cursive and the Palmer method. Beautiful but mostly illegible. Even the accountants in our office can’t write legible cursive.

    I am an old so I learned cursive in school and hated it, because it is so slow if you want to be legible. Always got bad penmanship grades for printing not writing. Then in sixth grade I finally got a B! I asked the teacher what  was up. She said “no A because it isn’t cursive, but solid B because I can always read it.”

    @sab: Sorry to hear about Dobby being frightened and reverting to feral.  It took several of our formerly feral kitties a year or more to trust us.  Some are better than others at figuring out who does not need a hair trigger defense.

    I’ve got a little grey one who loves being picked up upside down and massaged.  Every once in a while he cries when he’s picked up upside down.  They’re armed with razors but they’re still so small.

    You’re very welcome. It’s one of those factoids that got dropped down the memory hole early on for political reasons. Crowing about Brexit being the “democratic and irreversible will of the people” sold better than “actually it was a vote in Parliament that another Parliament could just vote the opposite way on” and was easier for the British News Media to fit into the Narrative.

      I used to read about Brits living in France practically gloating about Brexit and how they planned to vote Leave and I’ve often wondered exactly what they thought would happen.

    Given that most of the British people with second or third homes in France would be in the very well to do financial bracket and probably rah-rah Tory voters, I’d imagine they were expecting that their offensively stylish neighbours who they were sure were constantly looking down on them for not understanding the language properly would get their big Froggy nezes bent out of joint while nothing else would change at all.

    Because those people are fucking dumb.

    @Kattails:   That’s interesting.  I’ve seen the pine pellets but didn’t know there was a fine version.  I’ll check it out. So far, on the two or three occasions when Lucy’s gotten into the litter, she’s pooped it out the next day (I can tell from the grayish color) but IT’S NOT EDIBLE!  Hahaha.

    The gate comes today!  Yay!  That’s the good news.  The further bad news is, kitten has been making a routine of pooping while I’m brushing my teeth.  Unfortunately, this is a very small apartment, and the configuration gives me only one option for gating off the cat pan – the bathroom.  Ugh.  One of my neighbors puts hers in the bedroom clothes closet.   Ewww!

    I knew there was a reason I swore I was not going to get another cat after Gracie expired.
