I am not seeing much specific information on this, but it seems like he may be talking about vaccination boosters. I guess we’ll find out at 12:30! (or later)
This wasn’t on the President’s schedule this morning, but it is now, so I am guessing that he has something to announce.
Baud
I’m a Pfizer baby, but I’m thinking of asking for a Moderna booster, just for the diversity.
Ken
“My fellow Americans, I have signed legislation that will outlaw COVID forever. The catch-vaccinate-release squads begin operations in five minutes.”
Scout211
It will be good to get some clarification for those of us who are team Moderna or J&J. One of my daughters is a teacher and her district had several mass J&J vax clinics earlier this year. All of those fellow teachers are looking for a booster. Like right now. Will they be allowed to get the Pfizer or Moderna?
Scout211
@Ken:
You must mean by Executive Order. Congress wouldn’t pass anything like that, right? Too many congress people are far too beholden to their COVID donors . . . ;-)
Brachiator
Right now, I am not sure that there is solid evidence on the effectiveness of a booster shot. It seems more on the level of “Why not? It might help and can’t do any harm.”
But emphasizing boosters is another way of encouraging the unvaccinated crowd to get their shots.
Baud
@Ken:
Why the hell is he releasing them?
Ken
@Scout211: I was riffing on Reagan’s inadvertent (?) attempt to trigger a nuclear exchange with the USSR.
@Baud: Good point. Confine them in the FEMA camps for two weeks, so it’s easier to find them for the second dose.
The Moar You Know
@Scout211: It looks like the recommendation is going to be exactly that; if you had J&J, the “booster” is either going to be Pfizer or Moderna and possibly the full two-dose regimen of either one. We shall see.
Elizabelle
@Baud: My question exactly.
Expel them. From the body politic. We cannot afford them!
UncleEbeneezer
@Scout211: My understanding is FDA will recommend Pfizer for us J&J’ers.
WaterGirl
Just started.
chopper
misread the post title as being about “vacation boosters” and was all oh yes please
WaterGirl
Huh. Kind of surprising… he didn’t really announce anything new. At least I don’t think he did.
Old School
@WaterGirl:
Yeah, if this was a last minute addition to the schedule, it is hard to see why.
Felanius Kootea
While it might not be anything new, it’s good to know that they are anticipating approval of the vaccine for children 5 – 11 and have already bought enough vaccines for those kids. So many parents will be relieved when their children can be vaccinated.
zhena gogolia
What I read in the NYT today was that the FDA would be considering J&J on Friday. So I didn’t really expect anything about that today.
trollhattan
Meanwhile, in Alaska.
It would be unseemly to root for the virus; I shall limit myself to congratulating Alaska Air for not bending to this moron’s selfish wishes.
trollhattan
@zhena gogolia:
Also read they’re pondering recommending Pfizer or Moderna as a booster for Janssen folks. Lots of moving parts in play.
Suzanne
@Felanius Kootea: Getting my kids vaccinated is absolutely top of mind for me. The approval for the 5-11s will get Spawn the Younger a vaccine. Next I need one for Spawn the Youngest.
Brachiator
@trollhattan:
Wow. Stupidity has taken a deep hold here.
Betty
Already answered so deleted.
Gravenstone
Unfortunately, no. The current argument in those quarters seems to run along the lines of “why should I get the shot if it doesn’t last?”. Not deep thinkers, these.
Gravenstone
@Brachiator: I like the inclusion of the Vicks steamer. Implies to me she’s already dealing with breathing difficulties. Covid pneumonia, come on down!!
Elizabelle
@Gravenstone: I know. I am loving that.
Hope she’s stocked up on Tiger Balm too.
Cermet
@trollhattan: I’m rooting for a toilet clog! Then let her giving runth over and spread through her house. The grift that keeps giving (and that she gets long covid.)
zhena gogolia
@Gravenstone: Vicks will really help with that. //
Ruckus
@trollhattan:
Unseemly?
This virus can play a vital roll in the world, as all living things do. It may not be a glorious roll or even a positive one (there may be speculation of the positiveness or lack thereof in this particular case..) but it does play a roll in the thing we call life.
Dan B
@Suzanne: It seems out of whack that I got my booster today and your kids are awaiting their first. I appreciate thoroughness because unexpected side effects for kids could shut down vaccinations stat due to fear and resulting rumors. But with a billion vaccines administered it seems nearly impossible that kids would have issues. They’re already administered, what, a dozen vaccines? Seems bureaucratic not cautious. It seems like a lot of ‘leaders’ covering their asses.
No one at the booster shot site was asked to stay for 15 minutes afterward. I drove to a friend’s house and hauled a couple loads of pots and pans up two flights of stairs and drove a half hour home. Your kids could probably do gymnastics or trampoline afterwards.

@Brachiator:
When stupidity is all someone has, it will take a deep hold and a lot of pressure to escape it’s clutches.
Matt McIrvin
@Gravenstone: I recall that in one of Luntz’s focus groups, any mention of boosters was one of the two big no-nos for his conservative vaccine-rejecters, the other being any mention of the demon Anthony Fauci.
trollhattan
@Matt McIrvin:
Wonder if they have the same cognitive dissonance when they fill the F-150. “Why I gotta buy gas; didn’t I just buy gas? Where’s mah freedom?!?”
Tony Gerace
@Ken: The opposite of death squads.
Ruckus
@Dan B:
I had to stay the 15 min after my booster at the VA.
The speed with which the vaccines were introduced has never been seen before, if I understand correctly. But there is a dramatic amount of medical knowledge out there in the world from the last 6 decades of medical advancement. The woman who worked on the concept of mRNA vaccines, did so for years, paving the way. And this organism seems particularly suited to mRNA technology. But it’s new, and it has never actually been seen before, so while you may be absolutely correct that with over a billion shots, and the very low rejection rate the kids may be better than fine. I’m glad they are being somewhat cautious. That’s far better than thinking that a horse dewormer will cure what ails you, when you don’t have worms – other than the ones in their tiny little brains.
Matt McIrvin
@Dan B: Young kids are physically different. Getting the dose right is tricky. There were heart-inflammation issues with teenagers–fortunately mild, but scary enough that they wanted to be extra careful. I am actually wondering if it’d make sense to give the new kid dose to everyone under 20.
Tony Gerace
@trollhattan: This dumb-ass has a recipe for beating covid? Most likely it involves gobbling a lot of horse paste.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Scout211: Reference to St. Ronnie’s off-mic comment about outlawing the Soviet Union.
Suzanne
@Dan B: The lack of kid vaccines freaks me out. They are still vulnerable. We had our second “COVID in school” notice of the year last week. Spawn the Younger is in 5th grade, and they are doing well with masking, but Spawn the Youngest is only two, and she has limited patience for it. So we are still really careful and not taking her to stuff. It sucks.
Dan B
@Ruckus: Interesting the VA still wants a 15 minute wait. My partner and I at two different Kaiser facilities were told we could leave unless we’d had anaphylactic shock or other immediate reaction.
And I am not a horse, in case you were wondering…
Dan B
@Suzanne: Caution can be good but we’re in a crisis and it seems like the bureaucrats are spooked by som heart inflammation cases more than fatalities and long term damage from getting Covid. Our neighbors’ two year old seems very outgoing but seems suspicious of most everyone outside his immediate family. He’s gotten comfortable with my partner and me, probably like our cats have gotten comfortable but still standoffish with our neighbors on both sides. How many kids will grow up to be suspicious of “strangers”?
Hang in there. It does seem that kids under 5 are going to take months to get approved.

@Dan B:
I wasn’t. It actually never occurred to me that you might be a larger 4 legged animal with a hairy tail….
Should I be worried?
WaterGirl
@Ruckus: Are you calling Dan B an ass? If so, I must protest! :-)
sab
@WaterGirl: Well, he admits to being a Democrat, which makes him a donkey.
Scout211
So Moderna boosters are a go. Link
Mousebumples
@Scout211: not sure that that’s official (i think the ACIP meeting on all this is next week) but it does sound promising. ?
Scout211
@Mousebumples:
You are correct. I posted that link and then I read the whole article. Today was the first step and the same panel is meeting tomorrow on the J&J booster. Next week we should be hearing what the official recommendations are. Or the next week, maybe.
