Wednesday Evening Open Thread

I had a crazy day today.  How about the rest of you?  The best part of the day was drinking sour cherry mojitos and eating pizza while I helped a good friend update the OS on her brother’s computer.

The worst part was getting a phone call this evening telling me that an old friend and college roommate died last week.

What was the best part of your day?

From downstairs: my first post-surgery mammogram was clear, no cancer according to the radiologist. And I get my booster shot and flu shot tomorrow.

Worst part was going in for a 3-hour Myocardial Perfusion (Heart stress test using chemicals instead of the treadmill). The best part was being told I have a damn good ticker for a 73-year old crusty old railroader

Best part: got the book cases secured to the wall, so now we can start the great unpacking. Worst? Found out our water bill is basically triple now, as Pennsylvanian American is now charging triple. We went from a $60 bill to $150`ish? They’re just hiking rates because… fuck if I know.

Best thing that happened to me today… was, um…well, nothing bad happened.  My days are pretty routine and to tell the truth, I don’t mind that.

Working-from-office three days a week does mean I get to play dress-up.  Wearing something other than PJs, sweats, and jeans is kind of novel.  I keep thinking I should be going out to dinner or something.

I’m in week 10 of my new job, and the director (my boss’s boss) told me “I can see why they hired you…thank you for all you do!”  I’m a specialist in data storage systems and I’m showing them stuff they’ve never seen before.  That…and my teammates are soaking all the new info up without a hint of animosity.

My old boss would have never let those words cross his lips, and my old team was as territorial as they come.

Watergirl, I’m sorry about your friend. I dunno how old you are, but at 56 I’m starting to realize that for me, these calls are not quite as rare as they used to be. But they are never easy, and I’d rather we all just soldier on quite a bit longer.

To the question: Gettin’ thru the chore list was pretty satisfying today. But I’m also excited/curious about the apparent pending OK of mix-n-match for the booster. I may yet just stay with Pfizer, but I am definitely considering Moderna. Kinda wish I was a rebel and could get myself to bootleg the full dose, but if I do chose to mix, I’ll take the prescribed half-dose of Moderna.

It even crossed my mind that a J&J could be interesting. The mechanism seems more different for that, so non-medical person that I am, I’m like “would that different ‘angle’ make my immune system work harder?” I also note that J&J with one shot gave far better response than either mRNA with just one dose.

Anyone know of any studies that have published (or preprinted or whatevs) with info on mixing? I only very recently learned that quite a few Canadians got 1 & 1 rather than 2 of same. Seems like a cohort to track!

Obviously the pandemic isn’t over if I’m excited about a booster shot. :/

I had my annual “boobs smashed in a car door” test this morning and really appreciate the digital radiology. So much faster and streamlined. I expect the usual negative result.

I had to drive through dark & rainy rush hour traffic to the appointment and had a fender bender happen in front of me. I just missed being involved by inches. Whew!

@BeautifulPlumage: Big accident just now near my home. The phrase ‘car flipped over’ was uttered, and there’s (another) smashed up car right in front of my building. Driver just got loaded into an ambulance, police have traffic stopped for the whole block, etc. Seems to have been a collision at the intersection, and a cascade from there. Joy.

I’ve been making great strides on my whole-house declutter. I’ve found a cleaner to come for an afternoon every other week, so I have to go through an area to get the room to a state where it can be cleaned. I still have quite a ways to go but progress IS being made, and the main area of the house looks better than it’s looked in years.

Meanwhile, my inherited cat turns out to have an upper respiratory infection, and I’m supposed to dose her with this liquid twice a day. She really gouged me this morning! If only Ouija boards worked, I’d ask my sister, “HOW do you give medicine to this cat?!” (For second dose I tried the ‘wrap cat in towel’ method – was still quite a struggle but no blood was shed.)

I can’t think of one good thing that happened today. Toilet in the master bath decided to leak (flapper chain wrapped itself around the flush handle ; the water just ran and ran for 3 hours before I discovered it) so now I’ve got a 2k estimate for treating the basement for mold and removing the wet carpet padding in the bedroom. Second leak I’ve had this year so I’m not submitting this one to insurance. And now I can’t sleep. This house hates me but I can’t move until I retire and have time to clean it out.

@dmsilev: that’s wild. Is the weather bad? Mine was on I- 5 into Seattle where there’s 5 lanes. An SUV from the left merged/bumped into the car just ahead of me. We were going ~ 25 mph so they both stopped and I had room to brake and swerve to miss both. Glad I kept room in front of me and the person behind did too.

Yesterday I finished the last bit of soil adding and rock border building of the new border bed that takes up half the backyard. This is a 95% backyard rehab and I’ve worked hard all summer to get to here. Next comes a topsoil delivery, mix that in, and spend the winter designing the plants and shrubs to plant next spring.  I’m going from water hog grass to low water use pollinators garden; this is a desert and lawns are stupid and unsustainable here.

Today we drove to the coast and are spending 3 days here watching the  raging seas.  Excellent fish and chips, more beach walking tomorrow morning before the next storm.

Some things are going nicely lately chez moi. This will be night 5 on a new mattress/platform. The former cost a pretty penny –it had been years since I’d priced them, and talk about sticker shock!– but so far seems like it will be worth the money. Also getting a new computer soon, finally well above the floor of the state of the art. Hoping these are not signs of the coming apocalypse.
