Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

This fight is for everything.

The words do not have to be perfect.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Republicans in disarray!

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

People are complicated. Love is not.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

I’m pretty sure that last pic isn’t a flower.

    Very pretty photos.

Beautiful! Why don’t more people grow caladiums?!?

I think between “aster” and “day lily” I got five of them right — or at least partial credit, if we’re supposed to identify which of the 20,000+ species of aster is in the picture.

Ok, let’s give it a whirl: 1 daylilly, 2 cleome, 3 daylilly (probably Stela Doro), 4 caladium (thanks debbie, couldn’t think of the name) 5 another daylilly, 6 daisy? 7 hydrangea, 8 more lilly, 9 begonia, 10  another hydrangea, 11 the common equus caballus.

The other day I dropped in briefly to mention that Breck’s is clearing out their hardy hibiscus stock. The Midnight Marvel I bought at $19.99, a price I was pleased with, is now $7.99. Mine arrived a couple of days ago and the dormant bare root ball is almost as big as my head. Grab one while you can!

@satby: That hibiscus looks beautiful. I wonder how well it would do in the high desert. We’re within their zone range. Might give it a whirl.

@Baud: That horse’s name is Flower — duh!

Potatoes. And more potatoes. I planted a 4′ x 4′ little plot for potatoes (red and yellow) and I dug up about 20 pounds this week. Mostly golf ball size which is just perfect for me. But too many! And I got no root cellar.

I used to grow caladiums as houseplants, back before there were varieties that included reds. My aunt and uncle’s home had a large, sprawling magnolia which shaded more than half their front yard. She planted lots of caladiums underneath and it totally brightened the yard. Whoever bought the house when they downsized ripped out the tree before I could get a picture of it. ?

@Spanky: Ha– True, but that size really is perfect for Syracuse Salt Potatoes which I truly love. Blood pressure be damned! (Actually, if the skins aren’t cut, there potatoes aren’t salty on the inside).

@O. Felix Culpa: We still haven’t had a frost or freeze yet, so I still have tomatillos on the vine. And scallions. Everything else is kaput.

    Time to plant the garlic!

@satby: Ok, I confess: because I’m insane, I also ordered the Spinderella one too. Some will be going into pots and overwintering in the garage. I’m saying goodbye to my now 7 food high Cavandish banana plant because I don’t want to drag that sucker back inside. So that pot and the one matching it with sweet potatoes growing will be free soon and need something for next summer.

@Immanentize: I didn’t see a frost warning, and it doesn’t seem like the plants (especially that damn banana) were affected; but there was a hard frost on the top of my car last night. Probably only the metal got cold enough.

@satby: So good! The key to the magic is that the salt saturate increases the water temp. sufficiently to produce a creamier, less starchy potato after cooking. Put on chives and butter and serve. Quite easy, very yummy.

Beautiful pix Ema. Thanx so very much.

Still getting the odd Zuchini out of my garden. The rainbow BumbleBee maters started ripening up again too. Other than that, it’s all just clean up. Doubt I’ll get it all done before the surgery, there’s just too much of it and we are supposed to get a lot of rain this week.

Autumn is finally arriving here this week, highs in the upper 50s to low 60s with lows one side or the other of 40. I’ll be firing up the woodstove in the evenings for my Mediterranean Lizard. Hope I have enough wood for the season.

    @OzarkHillbilly: @O. Felix Culpa: INORITE???!

But hell, $4.99 for something that was nearly $40 only 6 weeks ago? I’m in, plus $7.99 for a plant with different color leaves year round? So my happy place.

Be sure to share if you buy something; and no, I’m not getting a commission. I just ? deals.

We’ve had a few hard frosts already, even though no snow yet, so my summer veg has all up and died. The snapdragons continue to bloom, and the sedums aren’t bothered, but we’re definitely moving into winter here.

Question: would planting peonies decrease the ant invasions into my kitchen (by giving them another target outside of my house) or increase the ant invasions (by attracting more ants to my front yard)?

@satby: That Spinderella is a pretty flower, and attracts bees and deer resistant.

After the Atmospheric River rain started last night, our pond is full (and muddy brown) today.  Water is going over the spillway in a sheet.  The creek is booming too.  It’s WET outside! We’re in N CA.
