It’s Friday for me! We have tomorrow and actual-Friday off. To celebrate the long weekend I went and treated myself to some new rocks. Well, new to me at least.
I hacked together a backlight so you can see just how GREEN the calcite really is. pic.twitter.com/XBUkcPS3qw
Steve is beatific.
I finally saw Dune and while a newbie unfamiliar with the book can follow the plot, it’s scarcely worth one’s time to do so. The whole movie is just a set-up for the next film, one beautiful shot followed by painfully detailed (if incoherent upon further contemplation) exposition followed by another beautiful shot, etc. At each new image of Timothy Chalamet meditatively contemplating yet another visual signifier of the House Atreides, I could only think, yes, he has a destiny, he must come to terms with his destiny. We’ve figured that out by now! in fact, we were told that within the first ten minutes! Can we just get on with the story, please?
Steve is a beauty, that’s photo-shoot quality right there.
I can see the calendar — Toms of West Virginia, “Meet Steve, he’s single loves long walks on the porch, loves eating from a bowl on the floor and has complete control of humans.”

Given the source you might think this is reassuring. Has he ever not been wrong?
I had to get the research fingers out. I had no idea Tom of Finland was —
a Finnish artist known for his stylized highly masculinized homoerotic art, and for his influence on late 20th-century gay culture. He has been called the “most influential creator of gay pornographic images” by cultural historian Joseph W. Slade.
New evidence shows that SARS-CoV-2 spreads explosively in American white-tailed deer, suggesting the animals could carry the virus indefinitely and spread it back to humans periodically.
@Omnes Omnibus: apparently they found antibodies in 40% of the studied population in one of the studies, it could take more than a few bullets… my question is how people would be catching a disease that barely spreads outdoors from deer.
Steve has got such brio; the angle of repose, buddha belly, the jaunty boot, the placid unguarded face.

@Chacal Charles Calthrop: @Major Major Major Major: The best version, in terms of actually faithfully telling the story on screen, is still the three part Sci-Fi miniseries from the early 00s. The effects aren’t that great, especially as time has gone on and the limited budget shows compared to Villeneuve’s version. The only really weak link in the Sci-Fi ministries is the lead actor. Alec Newman is just stiff. The British, Bulgarian, and Italian actors in the cast are fine, Newman is just meh.

@mvr: His early stuff on the Middle East was decent.
Used to be display cases of various minerals under black lights in an otherwise darkened room at the old Hayden Planetarium. No idea if it’s still there.
Many, many decades later can readily remember which one made the biggest impression on kidlet me: aragonite.
Steve was recently forced to go to the groomer when he clearly wasn’t in the mood. And besides, Steve does whatever the heck Steve wants to do. Furthermore, he’s a handsome fellow, and I just happen to love fur critters.

Danny and I joined a club that organized trips on weekends to big/famous quarries in Ohio and Indiana, we had to take an MSHA safety class! Which many folks ignored the rule about staying away from the highwalls. Have way too many rocks, built a big garage/shop with shelves for bulk storage of rocks.
Danny was my collecting buddy, inspired me to collect. When I was a little kid, I dug for buried treasure with my mom’s tablespoon. Dan showed me that there are actually precious stones that anyone with a little drive can go collect in reality.
He was from up in anthracite coal mining country in PA.

Haven’t posted for a while, but still lurk! Not even sure I remember what nom de post i used here! But I bought the calendar one year and donated to a few animal posts.
So i thought I would throw this out there in case anyone has ideas. I’m helping to spay and neuter and do vet care for a large colony of feral cats near Roanoke Virginia.
Their current home will be bulldozed soon. Anyone willing to take two or three Barn cats or Warehouse cats or Marina cats or two or three cats for anywhere, I am willing to transport within any reasonable distance. We are doing great on our fundraising, but not too great on relocation ideas.
Feel free to reach out for any further information. I’m trying to post everywhere I can think of that has big numbers of animal lovers!
