Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

All hail the time of the bunny!

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

We still have time to mess this up!

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

For those wondering:
—bubble size indicates county population size
—data is thru yesterday (11/12/21).

? As promised, here's the same graph w/CUMULATIVE county-level deaths *since the start of the pandemic*.

As I suspected, the reddest tenth of the country is still running about 50% higher than the bluest tenth even when you include that horrific first wave in NY/NJ/etc. pic.twitter.com/XsnSc8aYR4

Antivaxxers on Facebook/TikTok are begging for advice on how to “detox” loved ones who got the shot.

They caved to mandates and want help from influencers.

Some say they’re doomed to death, infertility, or government tracking.

But others have “remedies.”

Like this: pic.twitter.com/ESykg2XIJk

— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) November 12, 2021

I’d say this was the dumbest timeline, but then an even dumber one will emerge…

When Madej talks about “nanotechnologies,” she’s referencing the “liquified computing systems” she falsely believes are in the vaccines.

Most people on TikTok don’t know who she is, but they do see “Dr.” next to her name, so some are pouring themselves a borax bath. pic.twitter.com/XNFrV2GG3w

— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) November 12, 2021

There's been a shift among online antivaxx communities in the last few weeks.

Almost 80 percent of eligible Americans have received one dose.

On social media, antivaxx influencers realize they’re losing.

They’re trying to hold onto followers who are increasingly giving in. pic.twitter.com/JyYIQiOWQ7

— Ben Collins (@oneunderscore__) November 12, 2021

That’s where the good news comes in: Antivaxxers realize that they’re losing the war.

They’re attempting to adapt to a largely vaccinated world with ludicrous post-shot remedies.

But the outcome is not terrible: more vaccinated people, taking very itchy borax baths.

    Locally,

A COVID-19 cluster on Kauai involving at least 36 cases has been traced to a church in Nawiliwili.

The state Department of Health reported today that the cluster associated with King’s Chapel will likely grow, after increasing from 16 known cases Monday.

“We only identified the cluster a week ago and cases are still trickling in, so … we expect it to keep growing,” Dr. Janet Berreman, district health officer for the Kauai District Health Office, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The ages of those infected range from 2 to over 60, DOH said. Four of the cases involved people who had contact with recently infected churchgoers.
    [snip]
The chapel is part of the King’s Cathedral and Chapels group, which was linked in March to a cluster of at least 55 COVID-19 cases at its Maui location. At the time, the group had rejected the state’s advice to halt in-person services while the coronavirus cluster was active. Source

For those who may not know, King’s is a rabidly right wing fundamentalist church organization.

Limited and noisy data today, as many States continue to take weekends and holidays off from reporting. But the news is really discouraging.

Cases have increased to back over 80,000 in the past two days. Deaths have leveled off at about 1150.

Even worse, the trend in vaccinations is awful. After several weeks of young kids getting first shots and eligibles getting boosters, new vaccinations fell off sharply even before the Veterans Day holiday, down to 1.2 million a day from 1.4 million in the previous two weeks. As Delta really took hold in August, new vaccinations rose to over 480,000/day. Now they are back down to 200,000/day.

Over 100,000,000 people in the US still haven’t even had one shot. Probably 60,000,000 of them have not been infected yet and are still sitting ducks for this winter’s wave.

The Netherlands is doing their 3 week light lockdown even though 85 percent of adults are fully vaccinated.

I was listening to a podcast where a guy talks about getting Covid after watching the movie Dune at an IMAX screening. He was not hospitalized, but felt bad for a few days. He had been fully vaccinated, but no booster. This guy is in his 30s without any other health issues.

Because of projection problems at an earlier screenings, the showing of Dune ended up being packed, without spacing between seats. Also, the theater stopped checking vaccination cards. Most people were wearing masks.

I think that even if we had 90 plus percent vaccination rates, surges would still happen and there will not be any simple return to normal. However, vaccination will help ensure that the pandemic will be manageable.

I hope that the CDC and other agencies are looking for other ways to help mitigate the impact of the virus.

New documents show Trump Admin silenced CDC at start of pandemic, tried to alter expert scientific reports, and then tried to delete evidence they were doing so. I think this is a really good time for local businesses that make lotions to target these Borax bath takers. “Got flakey Borax-y skin problems? Our natural bee-balm mayonnaise spread will make you feel like you’ve never taken a jab in your life.” My bro runs such a shop in Madison, WI but so far has not returned my calls, so this idea is for anyone.

I wonder why I got kicked out of the Covid survivors forum on facebook.

Saturday in the UK we had 38,351 new cases. The rolling 7-day average is down by 0.4%. Weekend figures, however, are notoriously inaccurate due to most offices being closed over the weekend and Wales not reporting at all on Saturdays. New reported cases by nation,

    England – 33,493 (up 338)

    Northern Ireland – 1896 (up 219)

    Scotland – 3052 (down 297)

Wales – Does not report on Saturdays.

Deaths – There were 157 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. The rolling 7-day average is down by 7.9%. 141 deaths were in England, 3 in Northern Ireland, 13 in Scotland and Wales did not report (Saturday).

Testing – Not updated on weekends.

Hospitalisations – Not updated on weekends.

Vaccinations – As of Friday, 12 November, 50,525,259 people had had 1 shot of a vaccine, 45,985,795 had had 2 and 12,164,586 had had a 3rd shot/booster. In percentage terms this means that 87.9% of all people in the UK aged 12+ had had 1 shot as of that date, 80% had had 2 and 21.2% had had a 3rd shot/booster.

This story is from a few days ago, so I don’t know whether it has been posted yet, but it is worth repeating.

Did you see that viral video of the woman on a plane being abusing and disruptive?  You know, the one where the vaccinated woman was being abusive toward an unvaccinated person and the flight staff?  Well, if this doesn’t sound right to you, it’s because the whole thing was staged and professionally produced, using actors.

Washington (CNN)A video of a maskless woman having a tantrum on an airplane — threatening to call the police because she is being forced to sit next to a man she presumes is unvaccinated — has gone extraordinarily viral on social media.
One TikTok post of the video, which was filmed from the perspective of a seated plane passenger, had more than 35 million views as of Friday. One Facebook post had more than 24 million views. Posts on Twitter and YouTube generated at least hundreds of thousands of additional views.
The comments on these social media posts show that a significant number of viewers believe the video depicts a real-life incident, like the anti-mask plane tantrums that have gone viral during the pandemic. And some conservatives have deployed this new video for political purposes, using it to make a point about out-of-control, irrational or hypocritical vaccinated people.
Facts First: The viral video is a staged scene from a professional film. The tantrum-throwing woman is an actor, as is the supposed pilot who challenges her at the end of the video. The video was produced by a man known as Prince Ea, an entertainer and creator of online content who has a history of using authentic-sounding titles about hot-button social issues to get people to watch his scripted footage.

(JTA Nov. 14 2021) — Israel’s government reached an agreement with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to purchase tens of thousands of doses of the company’s new anti-viral treatment for COVID. The news was first reported by Israel’s Channel 12 news station, according to The Times of Israel.

The doses, which are administered in pill form, will be shipped to Israel after the drug is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. Pfizer’s trials showed the drug to be highly effective in reducing the chance of hospitalization or death in unvaccinated people infected with the coronavirus. The pills could be approved by the agency before the end of 2021. The United States has also purchased millions of doses of the drug. …

“If the drug is approved for use it will be another significant tool in managing the pandemic, together with vaccines for everyone and accessible tests for everyone, all the time,” P.M. Bennet said in a cabinet meeting Nov. 7 [emphasis added]

I haven’t done much reading about the Pfizer & Merck treatments, but I hope that this after-infection option combined with (too slow but rising) vaccination & boosters will mean that we can find a level of ‘truce’ with the pandemic.

That said, I am envious of the Dutch. They have some right wing pushback, but the relative social cohesion that allows something like their modest dial-back (I’d refrain from calling it lockdown lite, personally) to be set in motion without triggering a red-state melt down flip out.

I know it’s not popular here to say things like this, but what Leonardt is asking is not an unreasonable question. We are not going to have “forever masks” in the US no matter how much some people would like that. We have to learn to live with Covid in the world, because zero Covid isn’t happening either.

@Soprano2: I’d more or less agree. Covid is not going to ‘magically disappear’ like our previous moron preznit suggested. It seems incredibly unlikely that it will recede like the 1918 Influenza.

I think what the pushback against Leonhardt is about is how we strategize the new normal, and how quickly. There are forces for just saying “it’s over” but that has a high cost, and who pays is very unequal.

Our society is quite frayed, but it really is just about 15% of the country that is unable to cope. We shouldn’t coddle them to make it all seem normal again.

In 1918 there were far fewer people in the US, approximately 2/3 fewer. And yet the number of deaths per population density was almost 3 times higher. There are a lot of reasons for that but a couple are communications and medical innovation-science. Of course there is still the same old human factor, which we still see today – “I am stronger than any old bacteria/virus/disease.” And “You can’t make me!”

Mocking people for saying they’re tired of the pandemic is dumb – do you know anyone who isn’t sick to death of it? There’s an article on the front page of our paper today saying it may take a year or more for this area to get to 70% vaxxed – or that it may never happen! (Thanks,TFG!!) I’m vaccinated, I’m not living like I’m not forever.

I’ll ask you the same thing I’d ask him: how many hospitalizations, cases of long Covid, and deaths a year are you prepared to accept? Without those numbers, any discussion of “managing Covid” is a waste of time.

@dr. bloor: I’ll make the opening bid at 25,000 national cases per day (about 1/3 our current level). If our current levels are going to be the new normal, I want to discuss how many hospital wards were are going to build and how to staff them. I don’t think its going to work to have an industry that is 1/6th of the economy shutting down on a seasonal basis to deal with COVID. If this is the new normal there is a greater supply chain issue than home depot being short on laminate floors for a few months.
