Biden will propose a 20-year ban on drilling on federal lands in a 10-mile radius of Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a sacred tribal site in New Mexico. Trump officials proposed leasing for oil and gas near there. By @partlowj @bydarrylfears https://t.co/9CwapQlCeX

Sometimes it’s better to avoid all the dopey talking heads on the 24 hour news channels, and all the cynical and evil op-ed writers in the NYTimes, and just visit WH.gov.
Jerzy Russian
This sounds like a big fargen deal. It is the right thing to do and it might cause a few heads to explode, so win win.
Mike in NC
Yeah, Trump wanted to “drill, baby, drill” in many of our national parks simply because he was a sociopathic asshole. Raping the land would please him just as much as raping women.
Dan B
@Mike in NC: I guess it’s good that TFG never had pets, very good for animals. He would have abused them at best. Sadistic humor and sadism elevated to mean strength and manliness.
SiubhanDuinne
I did not know that our current Poet Laureate was a Native American. And I feel deeply that I really should have known that.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joy_Harjo
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Dan B: I was just telling Mr DAW that when I think of TFG and the people who worked with him, my primary reaction is still disbelief. Some part of me thinks they have to be faking. No one could be that stupid and evil and function in the real world. Or maybe one person could, but a whole bunch of them? I still can’t take it in.
Comrade Colette
This is good news! I’m so pleased to see this administration finally paying Native American concerns at least a tiny fraction of the attention they deserve. Also glad they’re sending some heavy hitters to the summit – I hope they listen as well as talk.
OT, I’m scheduled for Shingrix vaccine dose #1 tomorrow morning and I’m absolutely fucking terrified. I’ve never met a side effect that didn’t like me.
HeleninEire
Imma cebrate my win. NYC just open up booster vaxs to everyone. Before today my 87 year old Dad got his booster. My sister who lives in a group home is gonna get hers soon.
As a NYC vaxxed person who didn’t fall into all of the first categories, I’m making my booster appointment. I was not eligible yesterday. Today I am.
That’s my win.
Dorothy A. Winsor
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Comrade Colette: I know individual reactions differ, but neither Mr DAW nor I had reactions to the Shingrix shots.
Geminid
@HeleninEire: Your city’s MTA will also get over $10 billion for subways and buses. It could easily put another $10 billion to good use, but that’s still a win. Maybe you will see some electric buses before too long.
Kay
This was big for a lot of people:
It’s a long story, but DeVos blocked forgiveness (while blatantly lying and saying she wasn’t ) there was a lawsuit prior to Biden taking office- people were held in contempt, etc. – and the Biden Administration came in and has really focused on expanding eligibility and cleaning up the mess they inherited.
Steve in the ATL
It’s about time we had a thread about Georgia football. Go Dawgs!
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Kay: I read about how those people were cheated of the loan forgiveness they’d earned.
TFG’s people (in this case De Vos) are like cartoon villains. There’s no ability to check themselves
Dan B
@Dorothy A. Winsor: My partner’s siblings have a sadistic sense of humor and love to make us lesser squirm, then they expect us to treat them as though they are the kindest most well mannered people. I believe that TFG’s team have similar beliefs about how they should be treated. It’s a narcissistic version of classism that bleeds into racism and misogyny. These attitudes provide the glue that binds them together. Matt Schlapp’s hissing fit demanding PBS be defended because there is an Asian Muppet is in that vein. The man has a mean streak that he trots out with no brakes. He revels in being monstrous. And he’s in charge of CPAP. He’s absolutely repellant to me but seems to attract a lot of people.
No name
@germy: Just wanted to tell you I’m glad I saw your comment the other day about Jhumpa Lahiri’s book of Italian stories…had not been aware of it so thank you. I hope you have also read some of what she has written; her short stories are especially poignant.
Ruviana
@Comrade Colette: Best of luck. I had no reaction beyond a slight sore arm when I got them.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steve in the ATL: I see you got into the cooking sherry again.
Dan B
@HeleninEire: Congrats! I felt very relieved to get each shot. Then I got the flu shot and ten days later the Shingrix. I was done with feeling safe and sick for days at a stretch. But getting to have friends over for dinner was fantastic!
Kay
@Dorothy A. Winsor:
It was partly the fault of Congress. They loaded the program up with excessively complex hoops to jump through in that way they do where they overdraft everything because every asshole has to add his or her personal qualification maze leading to a 2% forgiveness rate.
But it really is good. These people have waited a long time for someone to pay attention to them and make good on this promise.
NPR did some good work on it. I listened to segment that was really good last year. Maybe they’ll revisit.
japa21
@Dorothy A. Winsor:
Stupid and evil was Trump’s domain. Evil applies to everyone else. It has become the most commonly used word in Mrs. Japa’s vocabulary when anything done by Republicans comes up.
Kalakal
@Comrade Colette: I’m halfway through the Shingrix course. I had the first one about 5 weeks ago along with a flu shot. All I had was a slightly sore arm for a couple of days
laura
@Kay: I had my hopes dashed on the loan forgiveness with 18 large still owing on my law school federal loans. Worked for several 501(c) 3’s over 20 years and made every single monthly payment due on time, but union work is excluded from the program. Spouse and I call my law degrees the houses that hang on the wall.
I do not begrudge any borrowers who qualify for this program, but it’d sure be nice.
Almost Retired
@Comrade Colette: I am congenitally disposed to vaccination reactions. And also to drama. My wife claims my usual side effects are whining and self-pity, as if the vaccine can be blamed for that. That being said, after my double Shingrex, I did not experience the temporary zombification that followed my three Moderna shots. A mildly sore arm, which of course I milked for all it was worth.
Betty
@Kay: This is so much of the story of the Biden Administration, cleaning up the mess left behind. The MSM just can’t celebrate that. Too boring. It is infuriating.
Dan B
@Geminid: Im looking forward to what Seattle will do with the stimulus. It looks like electric buses and electric or hydrogen at the port. Electric mail trucks would be nice but we’re gonna wait til DeStroy is gone. May happen next year!
Also electric dump trucks please!
SteveinPHX
I spent several days at Chaco camping with one of my sons several years ago. Truly a magical place. Once you go on a guided tour and participate in one of the evening stargazing sessions, you’ll be forever impressed.
Why not ban fracking, drilling for 200 years instead of 20 years? 2000 years? THIS PLACE NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED!
Comrade Colette
Thanks to all who described mild or no reaction to Shingrix – very reassuring. I’m just going to assume I’m in that camp until – no. Full stop. I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine …
SiubhanDuinne
@SteveinPHX:
Two words: IN PERPETUITY.
Dan B
@Comrade Colette: I had a mild reaction to Shingrex #1. My shoulder was sore for six days and the day after I felt tired and a bit achy. I had the Covid booster, the flu shot, and the Shingrix all in 24 days so my immune system was displeased.
Old Dan and Little Ann
The wife and I both got our boosters tonight. She took tomorrow off from school. I did not. Hope all is well in a.m.
Hungry Joe
@Comrade Colette: I’ve found that side effects are much easier to weather when I remind myself that they’re only going to last a day or two. The symptoms may be as bad as when I’m sick, but when I’m sick part of the discomfort comes from worrying: How long will this last? How bad will it get? When I got the Covid vaxxes and the booster I stocked up on soup, set up a full schedule of Netflix and podcasts, gathered the blankets, warned Ms. Joe that there would probably be some whining, then lay back and said, “Bring it.”
It wasn’t half bad. Or rather, it WAS half bad. Half. For about 36 hours. And I was very brave.
Kay
@laura:
Oh, that’s sad. Excluded. I have this mental picture of people in Congress who take a good bill and start adding things to exclude people. “Let’s see them get around THAT”
Old Dan and Little Ann
We owe 60 grand still and were told 2 weeks married couples were ineligible. Un!Fucking!Believable!
debbie
@Kay:
They did, this afternoon. Listen to the educator reading her forgiveness letter and then tell me you didn’t tear up.
debbie
@Comrade Colette:
Good luck! You’re braver than I am.
Kay
@debbie:
I’m glad. I was impressed with the long story I heard last or the year before- probably 2019 because that’s the year DeVos was held in contempt and USDOE was fined 100k.
It’s cute when they post the forgiveness letter or the screen shot on Twitter.
Ella in New Mexico
@Mike in NC:
With the added benefit of multimillionair donors chucking bucks into his PACs that he could transfer to himself and his ugly, shitty fail-son/daughter spawn and his nearly bankrupted businesses.
@SteveinPHX: Chaco is a mystical, transfomative site that is nothing less than sacred, a delicate and one of a kind place, and has no natural protections from damage if drilling occurred nearby.
I have no idea why this is not a permanent ban except maybe this is the limit of an executive order and someone naievely assumes that once everyone gets used to it being off limits for 20 years, and society somehow defies history and leaves behind it’s oil addiction, it’s gonna become permanent law enacted by some future enlightened, highly functioning Congress.
Ok, given I’m 60 in April , HOPEFULLY I’ll see that happen. but I’ll be a pretty angry octagenarian if not.

I have my first Retuxin IV for this half of this year tomorrow, which is the recommended distance from my Moderna booster in August. I get it in a single airpressured room so I can listen to music or audio books or snore without disturbing the other patients. I’d rather be back in the circle of recliners, but not sad to have precautions taken.

Late here and unable to stick around…. Chaco Canyon is the destination my annual father and son camping and hiking trip. Great times with a cool kid, an even cooler man now. In 1987, I co-piloted a hot air balloon over Chaco with a much loved and long gone pal from North Carolina. We were in his balloon called the Anasazi designed by my wife. We sought permission which was granted providing we lifted off and landed outside of park boundaries. We flew directly over Pueblo Alto,

Chris Christie murdered his political career when he let Barack Obama give him a big hug right in front of the children who claim to be the media. Republicans will never trust nor vote for him. All these appearances are him auditioning for a pundit job, and the fact that he’s showing up to so many networks makes me guess it’s not going well.

It is a pretty big circle jerk.
Some members of congress seem to be in that circle.
And like any circle jerk, I would imagine that there are at least a couple of problems.
First, it’s a circle jerk.
Second, these are jerks at least at a nominally high level in society, even though they should likely be in a high security level facility.
And third, they really, really shouldn’t be doing this in public, but they have negative shame so they think they should be doing this in public. They are, like always, wrong.

O/T: One thing about being on so many political fundraising lists is that occasionally I learn something new. Just opened an email from a group called “Her Bold Move” (which, incidentally, I never even heard of and certainly never signed up for) and according to that message, Vermont is the only state in the Union that has never sent a woman to the US House or Senate. Found that an interesting tidbit.

Chaco Canyon is one of the most magical places anywhere. Or as a long-gone friend described it “One of the five most cosmic places on Earth.”
Like all parks it suffers when there are too many people, which is why I suggest going in winter. It is pretty remote, which helps protect it, but there are so many people now…

Let me tell you about tuff guy Christie. He’s a year or two older than I am. He grew up in Livingston, NJ. My parents moved there when they were first married, but felt out of place because my mom took her babies out in the stroller herself instead of having a nanny do it while she stayed at home.
My parents then moved to a tiny town called Mendham, out in Morris County, which was then a fairly affluent but still mixed-income town in the far exurbs, not reachable by direct train to NYC, but near a lot of mansions and corporate HQs that had relocated to NJ. We left NJ when I was entering high school, but visited family there frequently. Mendham got REALLY wealthy when NJ Transit put in a direct commuter line to the City and stockbrokers started living there because of the excellent schools. One of those stockbrokers was Christie’s wife, Mary Pat.
He loves to act like/talk like a thug, but he grew up in ritzy Livingston and lives in hunt-country Mendham Township.
