The House just voted to censure Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and remove him from his committee assignments for tweeting out an anime video that showed him killing AOC and wielding a sword against Biden. The only Republicans who voted for censure were Cheney and Kinzinger.
Any bets on whether Gosar will stand in the well of the House while his censure is read?
I’m surprised that he did, according to the Post:
Shortly after Wednesday’s vote, Gosar stood in the “well” of the House chamber as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) read aloud the censure resolution and a verbal rebuke.
Also, does this make Gosar more or less of a martyr than Ashli Babbitt?
Ken
If he doesn’t, are there mechanisms to force him to comply?
Well, maybe not “mechanisms”; simple chains should be enough.
lowtechcyclist
I think he doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude to do that, so he won’t. But I can’t think of a reason to care.
All I can say is, the next time a Republican complains about lack of civility, I’m gonna point them to this vote.
ETA: Ah, the coveted second spot. :-)

@Ken: I favor dropping a 16 ton weight on him, as an example for the others.

Gosar and several other GOP congressmen need to be forced to testify on what they did on January 6.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
do we know who voted “present”? Some chatter on MSNBC about Nancy Mace
Anonymous At Work
Remember, the vote is “Bipartisan” according to GOP rules for GOP voting.
CarolPW
@Ken: He did.
ETA according to the WaPo.
Gravenstone
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: David Joyce- OH was the “present” vote, per TPM’s reporting.
VOR
I can’t imagine he was doing anything positive on those committees so this is likely a net plus for Congress. Hmm, does the Speaker control office space for congresspeople? That could be a serious punishment especially if he is one of the types living in their office.

It’s the little shit like this that makes me really fear for my country. And my safety in red, red rural America.

It’ll be interesting to see whether this exercise makes his future behaviour less or more civil
oh who are we kidding…
Roger Moore
@VOR:
The only worry is this will leave him with more free time on his hands. We all know that free time is the Devil’s plaything, so I can see him getting up to even worse now that he has more time to do it in.

“Also, does this make Gosar more or less of a martyr than Ashli Babbitt?”
Always more.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Gravenstone: So John Katko who is being threatened with defenestration voted with Gosar, McCarthy and MTG. As did the guy who’s leaving Congress because he’s harassed by trumpers in airports (Gonzeles?). Fred Upton who got vile death threats from them. Meijer from Michigan who is supposed to be a principled libertarian.
Another Scott
I heard parts of the debate on C-SPAN radio. His comments before the vote were not contrite, he was defiant saying that he was like Hamilton.
Boebert is a monster.
The GQP seems irredeemable at this point. It’s kinda scary, but it should make us all even more determined to defeat them at the ballot box, in the courts, and in the public square.
Cheers,
Scott.
andy
Gosar is less of a martyr because he makes nobody on the right feel funny in their pants.
bbleh
Aw, this “censure” thing is pu**y stuff. For a Real Man like Gosar it doesn’t mean anything. If he really wants to show he has the courage of his convictions, I say, don’t just censure him in the well of the House; crucify him. He’s tough; he can take it. And if he can’t, then what’s that say about him?
The tree of liberty, you know. (And think of the optics …!)

bad photoshops of torture porn in the workplace. Ever get the feeling that Gosar is a congress critter because that’s the only place he can get a job?

I know Gosar’s district and its red. It may have gone from fire engine red to ketchup red but its still red. His district may change due to redistricting but chances are he will end up in a red district or he will move to a similarly red district. Also too, I think he’s mentally ill.

It’d be nice to see the snooze media go nuts on this: not just Gosar’s actions but the fact that 207 GQP Reps decided to stand by a guy promoting a video of himself killing a co-worker.
207!
Again, this is something they had a choice about. There is nothing that says, “Dems want X, therefore I must oppose X, even if X is morally abhorrent in the extreme”
But we saw this with trumpov of course, and with Roy Moore, and Boebert, MTG, Cawthorn, and we’re seeing it again with their current crop of Senate candidates. Why, I almost sense a theme here, Dems…

Harsh, but fair.

Did he do that creepy head wagging thing while he was being censured?
karen marie
@Mai Naem mobile: Andy Biggs is also mentally ill. Unfortunately, I am “represented” by Andy Biggs. His office was a bit huffy when I called just now to express my disgust with his vote against censuring Gosar. They wanted my first and last name. I was like, nope, not giving you my last name, because I am afraid of Andy Biggs, given his vote to oppose censure of Gosar and his participation in the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
It’s a good thing Arizona voters passed marijuana legalization last year, because smoking a joint is the only thing that keeps me from walking into traffic to escape this god-forsaken shithole of a state.
Mai Naem mobile
There’s a picture from Jan 6th with Gosar, Andy Biggs(R- AZ) and I believe Marjorie Greene Taylor where some Dem Rep is offering them masks and they just have these evil smirks on their faces (they were refusing the masks.) Anyhow that picture always looked like they knew they themselves were going to be okay because they were in on the insurgency.
karen marie
@Jeffro: lol – you know the score – it’s all and always “bad news for Democrats.”
Geminid
@karen marie: How do you think Senator Mark Kelly is doing so far? What do you think his reelection chances look like?
wvng
@lowtechcyclist: he did stand in the well, surrounded by 20 or so other republicans who were there to support him.
karen marie
@Geminid: It’s hard to say. Arizona isn’t nearly as Republican as Republicans like to say it is, especially if you look at voters statewide. And fundraising is potentially a problem for Gosar and Biggs should either make a senate run.
The article is a bit aged – who knows whether January 6th continues to affect how big money donors treat them, and Lesko and Schweikert, but it doesn’t look good for them actually unseating Kelly.
tokyokie
What I would like Democrats to do is repeatedly point out that behavior like Gosar displayed and those who stood with him in the well of the House is extraordinarily un-Christian. I’m assuming that all these creeps are Bible-beating fundies, and I’d like every one of them to have to explain how Gosar’s and their actions jibe with Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Is this what you want done unto you? It’s high time that the Democrats made an issue of the moral depravity of the so-called “Christian” right.
Geminid
@karen marie: Thanks, and that’s good to hear. Hopefully Kelly and Warnock will win their reelections, and we will get some more like them in Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. and Wisconsin.
