Biden replaces Ron Bloom, USPS board chair and key DeJoy ally, on postal board (Talking Points Memo)
President Biden on Friday announced plans to nominate two former federal officials to the U.S. Postal Service’s governing board, replacing two key allies of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, including its Democratic chairman.
The move casts doubt on DeJoy’s future at the agency, according to three people with knowledge of the matter, and potentially gives liberals on the panel two crucial votes to oust the postal chief, who can be removed only by the board of governors.
The people spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak freely about private discussions.
The White House on Friday, confirming a Washington Post report on the decision, announced it would nominate Daniel Tangherlini, the former administrator of the General Services Administration in the Obama administration, to replace Bloom. Derek Kan, a Republican and the former deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, would replace Republican John M. Barger.

(De)Joy to the World!
I put this up briefly just moments before the Rittenhouse verdict was announced. So I pulled the post. The first 4 comments are from the original posting.
raven
rittenhouse not guilty on all counts
Mousebumples
@raven: but are there federal charges still coming? (eg transporting guns across state lines or something?)
raven
@Mousebumples: Nah
WaterGirl
I’m pulling this thread until later. With the Rittenhouse verdict in, no one is going to be talking about anything else.
Immanentize
Deja Vu in my brain?
WaterGirl
@Immanentize: I don’t think it counts if you really were there before.

Getting rid of DeJoy before the Christmas rush, with a big public apology and promise to make the Post Office great again!, would likely be worth 3 or 4 popularity points for Biden. My Trumpy crabby veteran post office clerk HATES DeJoy.
Immanentize
@WaterGirl: But I never know if I really was.
Kent
I don’t know why some Senate or House committee doesn’t put LaJoy under a colonoscopy microscope for the fucking duration. Pulling on every thread of corruption and conflict of interest. He has them in spades. Until he finally goes away on his own accord.
Immanentize
@Kent: It’s easier to get records from his successor.
WaterGirl
@Immanentize: Sadly, DeJoy(less) will not be gone before Christmas. If I understand the timeline correctly. The new person to replace the Dem who supports DeJoy (WTF?) won’t be nominated until “next month”.
Not sure what the process is, but I don’t see DeJoy(less) being gone before the end of the year.
Still, knowing he will be gone is good news to my ears.
WaterGirl
@Kent: I know. I was just ranting about DeJoy yesterday.

Bloom is on a holdover year, meaning his term actually expired last year, but the board voted to extend his term. Note that Biden was not yet President a year ago. The term expires on December 8, as does a Republican member of the Board. So Biden should be able to replace Bloom with a member who aligns with the other three new members and the other Democrat currently on the board and hopefully a Republican who will also vote to remove DeJoy. At the very least, this will mean a 5/4 Democratic majority and DeJoy will be voted out. Board of Governors requires Senate confirmation, so this is going to take a few months to get the new board members on board.
mrmoshpotato
Just making up medical equipment, eh?
Immanentize
@feebog: My guess is December 8 will magically be the day DeJoy also decides to spend more time with his family.

@mrmoshpotato: Just last week, I renamed my search and destroy specialist my “Colonoscopist.” He was pleased with the title then gave me my Rx for the prep torture.

Hey speaking of cool stuff, did you hear Kalima Harris was acting president today?
Spanky
So, Joe has a polyp removed AND gets a colonoscopy.

De Stroy gone would be great. My 2 day Priority Mail order from Skinluvvers is at day ten shipping. Pillow covers from Turkey arrived in four days or less, all three orders.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques:
Who?
Mary G
Moscow Mitch and his Minions will block/hold these nominations until their dying breaths. Sorry to be a downer and hope I’m wrong.
Edmund Dantes
@Enhanced Voting Techniques: would have been funny for her to pull an Idaho Lt. Governor and just put out a ton of executive orders while in power. /end tongue in cheek
(the Idaho thing is whack a doodle)
Rob
God I hope it’s true!

In other news, I’m scheduled for my booster next Tuesday, by which time my wife should be recovered from her booster and could take care of me if necessary like I’m taking care of her after her booster yesterday.

Getting rid of DeJoy is a great first step. Stopping the GOP in Congress from screwing with the postal service would be better. Undoing the screwjobs they’ve enacted to order to try and ruin it until they could deband it entirely would be best.
USPS, Social Security, Medicare, and the VA are all examples of things that work really well, as long as you don’t let the GOP touch them.

@mrmoshpotato: Secret name of new President installed by the Illuminati. AKA Muad Dib.

Biden nominees announced a few hours ago. Dem nominee is Dan Tangherlini. He is currently CFO of the Emerson Collective. Served as GSA Administrator during Obama’s first term. Republican pick is Derek Kan. Was a Trump appointee in the Office of Management and Budget in 2020. Former executive with Lyft and a couple hedge funds.
p.a.
Interestingly, I think TPM as my source, said Bloom is a Dem. Follow the money I guess.
schrodingers_cat
@p.a.: A Trumpy Dem. Guess who blocked Obama’s slate for the Post Office giving us DeJoy?
The Socialist Jesus in Vt.
Fair Economist
@feebog: Good to see Biden is wasting no time getting his nominees teed up.
I’ll do a happy dance outside to something like the Girl from Ipanema if DeJoy becomes DeParted before June.
feebog
@p.a.:
Bloom is a Dem, but seems to think DeJoy is doing a good job. Might have something to do with business DeJoy has steered Bloom’s way.
Fair Economist
@schrodingers_cat: It’s ambiguous, since Sanders didn’t block Obama’s appointment until after the 2014 election, and McConnell would almost certainly have blocked it anyway. He blocked basically every appointment Obama could have made at that point.
feebog
@Fair Economist: Biden got his first 3 picks through very quickly. The fact there are nominees from each party means they should go through the confirmation process together and Republicans won’t dare to hold things up.
WaterGirl
@p.a.: Yes Bloom is a Dem who supports DeJoy.
WaterGirl
@feebog: Jen Psaki said at the Press Briefing today that they have serious concerns about conflicts of interest between Bloom and DeJoy.

@WaterGirl:
I’ve lost two checks so far. I’ll never get back the time I was worried about my credit reporting and on the phone trying to fix things.
justawriter
Wonder which troglodyte will step up to try and block the nominations? Most dead tree media (including me) have been walloped by lousy postal service and rate hikes the last five years, so I wonder if there will be pushback if there is opposition to the nominations?
WaterGirl
Speaking of Jen’s press briefing today, the Doocy guy said multiple times that Biden is lying about the BBB and adding to the deficit. He is a piece of excrement.
Fair Economist
@feebog: Never underestimate the potential evil and shamelessness of elected Republicans.
Sebastian
At first I thought Tangherlini was a new nickname for Trump
Matt McIrvin
@Enhanced Voting Techniques: according to Stephanie Grisham’s book, Trump refused to be anesthetized during his colonoscopy because he didn’t want to transfer power to Mike Pence, even for an hour or two. That’s just bizarre.
Fake Irishman
@Mary G:
Schumer can muscle this through if it’s a priority. They prioritized getting three vacant Dem appointments on the board last summer. But it will have to be balanced with other things (eg judges)
Edmund Dantes
@Matt McIrvin: just look to the Idaho Governor situation. It’s not paranoia when they are actually trying to get you.
Every time the Gov has to hand over power ceremonially the Lt Gov has tried to implement whack a doodle stuff (even for the already whack a doodle GOP gov).
she thinks she is actually in power va just a temp placeholder for emergencies. Donald would do it so he assumes Mike Pence would. Thus his fear.
Sancerre66
WaterGirl, I sent you a question re Four Directions fund raising… just in case you have a robust spam filter and don’t see it.
Jinchi
What’s the etiquette at the press briefings? I doubt every reporter is regularly given a shot to ask a question. I don’t understand why Doocy gets to troll the press secretary on a daily basis.
WaterGirl
@Sancerre66: I just checked, and I do have an email message from you. I just replied. thanks
WaterGirl
@Jinchi: I wonder that, too. With the crap that comes out of the major papers, I would think they would have to compete for time and not have a guaranteed slot every single day.
I am not in charge of the press briefings or the press. They never call for my opinion, which is shocking! :-)
Ruckus
@JML:
Is there a list anywhere of anything republicans touch that they don’t fuck up?
Betty
@p.a.: I read that he privatized the UK’s mail system. No wonder he loves DeJoy. Not sure what kind of Democrat that makes him. Third Way?
SiubhanDuinne
@Ruckus:
Is there a list anywhere of anything republicans touch that they don’t fuck up?
Yup. Right here:
Ruckus
@Matt McIrvin:
I understand that it wasn’t that long ago that it was unusual to anesthetize anyone for a colonoscopy. If mine 4 yrs ago was any indication it is far more pleasant to be under but even more so for those giving the procedure and it can go a lot faster.
Sancerre66
@WaterGirl: Awesome… thanks! :-)
Ruckus
@SiubhanDuinne:
Alright that got a chuckle….
Although I have to say that every once in a while dad does seem to have to break out the threaten stick…..
Craig
@WaterGirl: I think Psaki is cool with calling on him every day cause she just rams his stupid shit back down his throat everytime, pushing back on his lies, reinforcing the actual policy in question and defanging right wing frames of “they ignore us, they never call on Fox” all in one package.
