Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Petty moves from a petty man.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

1. I am typically a fierce critic of Trump, so I must say this: After having read a few such book, my impression is that Operation Warp Speed did contribute significantly to the realization of a successful vaccine. Not so much in speeding R&D, but approval and production. https://t.co/rLeMDZCoSX

Nationwide US cases again increased slightly, as did deaths. There has been no increase in the West or the Deep South. Cases in the upper South increased slightly. Every State in the Northeast continued to increase.

One year ago this week the winter wave in the Midwest peaked. There was a small increase today, but no significant increase in the past 5 days. States with increased cases include MI, WI, OH, IN, KS, and IL. ND, SD, NE, and MN show no increase week over week. MO shows a big increase, but it appears to be solely due to a data dump 6 days ago.

Last year there were big decreases right after Thanksgiving, followed by a big surge in the next 14 days. In the past 2 weeks this year, cases have risen nowhere near as fast as one year ago. The next two weeks ought to give us a big indication of how big, or (relatively) muted, the winter wave this year will be.

If the situation in the Midwest warrants, I’ll post before Monday. Otherwise the data will have big holiday distortions between now and then.

I’m sure the MAGA crowd will decry DC Comics for trying to “indoctrinate” our children about vaccination.

Which is pretty amusing considering that the same people who championed Nancy Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger telling kids what to do in the name of health and safety in the 80s are now against the government telling kids what to do in the name of health and safety.

I was looking at the San Diego data and noticed they show a big wave among the unvaccinated a few months ago which passed, leaving unvaccinated cases relatively flat. Vaxxed cases stayed pretty flat throughout. San Diego is not enforcing vax or mask mandates. So I think in Southern California at least almost everyone has had it or been vaxxed and we have reached endemicity. The cases we are seeing now are roughly the steady state from immunity decaying over time. The rest of the country is either already there or going through its last wave.

We will still see a holiday wave because holiday behavior favors transmission. But it won’t be huge, because there won’t be many naive people to infect, and it will end quickly once the holidays are over.

Looks as if the U.K. will pass 10,000,000 cumulative cases by this time tomorrow, joining the U.S., India and Brazil in reporting an 8-digit number.

(More than likely Russia had already reached that level a while back but their officially released tally does not yet reflect that.)

    Meanwhile,

An outbreak of COVID-19 on Saipan sent their case numbers soaring today.

Health officials said there were 98 new cases confirmed, which is 17% of all known infections since the start of the pandemic, the Guam Pacific Daily News reported.
    [snip]
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands have had relatively low cases since March 2020 with only 572 known infections. Source

    Locally,

Governor David Ige and the county mayors today announced the next phase of state and county measures related to COVID-19, giving the counties the ability to issue emergency orders without seeking approval of the state. After the current state of emergency expires on Tuesday, Nov. 30, the four county mayors will determine appropriate guidelines for their respective communities.
    [snip]
Both Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi and Maui Mayor Michael Victorino said they would be getting rid of the six-foot distancing rule currently in place for restaurants, allowing eateries to resume full capacity for dining indoors, starting Dec. 1, 2021. Mayor Victorino said indoor dining will still be limited to those who show proof of vaccination or testing, as is currently the case.
    [snip]
“For gyms and other high traffic areas, we’ll let them go up to 100% capacity, but physical distancing will still be required… I’m looking into with Dr. [Lorrin] Pang, and other medical people to make sure that we’re able to drop those other restrictions as far as physical distancing is concerned. Outdoors, there’s no restrictions. When it comes to sporting events, fans will now be able to get together, but if you’re indoors, the mandate for indoor wearing of masks still exists statewide, as well as in Maui County,” said Mayor Victorino….
    [snip]
As of Dec. 1, counties will no longer be required to obtain the approval of the governor or the director of the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency prior to issuing county emergency orders, rules or proclamations.…

Executive Order 21-08, issued on Nov. 2, 2021 regarding statewide limits for social gatherings, restaurants, bars, social establishments, and gyms will end on Dec. 1, 2021. The counties will implement appropriate measures for social gatherings, restaurant operations, social establishments and other venues within their own counties.
    [snip]
State Rules that will Remain in Place:

Gov. Ige said the following basic measures “have proven to be effective” and will remain unchanged in the next emergency proclamation relating to COVID-19:

    • The Hawaiʻi Safe Travels Program;
    • The indoor mask mandate;
    • The vaccination or testing requirements for state executive and county employees; and
    • The vaccination or testing requirements for contractors and visitors to state facilities.

Of all the positions as role model where safest behavior ought to be a given, well, read it for yourself.

Russell Hurd in Royse City, Texas, has been playing Santa since 2017, after he retired from the Army. He’ll be in his red suit to go with his long — and very real — white beard at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center near Dallas. His visits with the throngs are distanced and masks are required. He longs for that to end.

“The way it used to be, it’s meaningful for us Santas, too. I mean, we’re human beings. We crave that interaction, but for now we do what we can,” Hurd said.

Hurd is unvaccinated and tests regularly for COVID.

“I know a lot of unvaxxed Santas across the country. I mean, it’s not just Texas,” he said.
    [snip]
The pandemic has taken its toll on Santa in other ways.

Stephen Arnold, the 71-year-old head of IBRBS (formerly the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas) said his organization of about 2,000 Santas and Mrs. Clauses has lost 57 Santas to COVID.

“Most of us are overweight, diabetic, with heart conditions,” said Arnold, a long-time Santa working this year both virtually and in person in Memphis, Tennessee. “I mean, we’re prime targets for a disease like COVID.” Source

Have a great holiday A/L and others.

Yesterday (Wednesday) in the UK we had 42,484 new cases. The 7-day moving average is up by 8.7%. New cases by nation,

    England – 36,550 (up 72)

    Northern Ireland – 1476 (up 7)

    Scotland – 2527 (up 46)

Wales – 1931 (down 2558, but Tuesday’s figures would have included a lot of catch up from the weekend as Wales does not report on Saturdays).

Deaths – There were 165 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. The rolling 7-day average is down by 5.5%. 140 deaths were in England, 4 in Northern Ireland, 17 in Scotland and 4 in Wales.

Testing – 979,922 tests took place on Monday, 22nd. The rolling 7-day average was up by 3.7%. The PCR testing capacity reported by labs on that date was 661,324.

Hospitalisations – As of Monday, 22nd, there were 8088 people in hospital and 928 on ventilators. The rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions as of 18th November, was down by 9.5%.

Vaccinations – As of Monday, 22nd, 50,800,732 people had had 1 shot of a vaccine, 46,186,817 had had 2 shots of a vaccine and 15,629,477 had had a 3rd shot/booster. This means that 88.3% of all people in the UK aged 12+ have had 1 shot, 80.3% had had 2 and 27.2% had had a 3rd shot/booster.

@Fair Economist: “Southern California at least almost everyone has had it or been vaxxed and we have reached endemicity. The cases we are seeing now are roughly the steady state from immunity decaying over time. The rest of the country is either already there or going through its last wave.

“We will still see a holiday wave because holiday behavior favors transmission. But it won’t be huge, because there won’t be many naive people to infect, and it will end quickly once the holidays are over.”

That strikes me as a pretty good guess. You probably have already seen the chart comparing EU countries’ vaccination rates vs. death rates. It really looks like there is an inflection point at about 75% fully vaccinated where death rates fall dramatically to below 15 or even 10 per million over a 14 day period. New England is close to that point in vaccinations, and CT, MA, NY, and NJ are close to or at that point with deaths

@New Deal democrat: I wouldn’t be so sure about the situation in Europe. The effects of vaccines is mixing with the seasonal effects and a the spread from east to west. I would not bet on any outcome. Yet.

Our county numbers took a surge a month or so ago, and the public health officer instituted and indoor mask mandate again for everyone.  The number of people wearing masks on the street went way up, from none to most.  Guess what?  Our case numbers went down.  I think the first death in months did it.  The most recent death was the guy who was the best tile man in the valley, the “only” tile man most contractors and customers wanted.  Another set of jobs that will go away, to be replaced by out-of-town contractors at least temporarily.

California numbers are good, except for the except for the red counties.

Ahead of the Thanksgiving holidays, California officials are raising the alarm about a winter Covid surge as hospitals in some parts of the state remain overwhelmed with patients, despite overall progress.

California’s coronavirus infection rate is one of the lowest in the country but the burden of infection remains unevenly distributed. In central California, a region that struggled with resistance to masks and vaccines throughout the pandemic, the strained public health system has been pushed to the brink. Hospitals this week are over-capacity and officials are seeking to transfer more patients out of the region for treatment in Los Angeles.

We’re just running around like crazy,” said Rachel Spray, a nurse at the Kaiser hospital in Fresno. “Call lights are going off, alarms are going off. We just don’t have the resources.” The hospital’s emergency room, intensive care unit, coronavirus overflow zones, and tent are not enough to accommodate the surge of sick patients, she said. “It’s not slowing down.”

In central California, resistance to public health measures including masks has run high throughout the pandemic and the region experienced the highest support for recalling Newsom over his pandemic-era restrictions.

Meanwhile agricultural workers in California’s Central Valley – many of whom lack legal status and easy access to medical care – remain the most vulnerable. The rate of Covid-19 positivity among California farm workers was four times that of the rest of the country, according to a report published in the journal Jama Network Open earlier this year. “The area we live in, that’s a higher-poverty area. There’s a lack of access to medical care. People have more co-morbidities,” said Spray. “And that leads to a higher chance of people getting sicker.”

Staffing shortages and burnout among health workers have further strained the region’s medical system. At Doctors Hospital of Manteca, nurses have been assigned up to nine patients at a time, “which normally is just unheard of”, said Brittany Smith, a surgical nurse at the center. The state’s guidelines recommend one nurse for every two ICU patients and every five surgical patients. “We’re essentially in a state of crisis,” Smith said. “And we’re being forced to work in conditions that are completely unsafe.”

@New Deal democrat: Right, death rates drop a lot, suggesting we’re seeing mostly patients who already have some immunity. But they are still horrific, if you look at the UK – #3 cause of death, about half that of cancer. People would rightly respond with panic if we faced cancer mortality jumping by 50%.

Likely mortality will fall further on tertiary infection – the immune system *does* continue to learn. But still it will probably be “bad flu season” all the time.

Curious if anyone has the expertise to know if there is a test where one can tell if someone who is vaccinated has ever contracted a previous case of Covid?

Follow on question would be can that previous infection, if detectable, can that infection be given a time line?

Would some type of blood test reveal different types of antibodies or would the antibodies from vaccination mimic possible earlier Covid antibodies and make it impossible to determine if there had been Covid infection at some point?

I am typically a fierce critic of Trump, so I must say this: After having read a few such book, my impression is that Operation Warp Speed did contribute significantly to the realization of a successful vaccine. Not so much in speeding R&D, but approval and production.

As a person who tries to be excruciatingly fair, I’ll grant that this is accurate.

It’s also pretty pathetic. “There’s a global emergency, where being able to approve a good vaccine, and produce it in sufficient quantities is a literal matter of life or death. So, uh… let’s see, would faster approval, and greater production capacity help, or hurt, once a worthwhile vaccine candidate exists?”

I mean, this isn’t like congratulating the Trump admin for wiping after pooping. This is like praising them for dropping trou before pooping.

That said: if someone out there thinks my claim is “Operation Warp Speed was completely useless.” I’m saying that it’s actual accomplishments weren’t something a normal person would proclaim as a victory, in and of themselves – you don’t get a Safe Driving medal for stopping for a traffic light that was red on your approach!

If Trump had actually been trying to protect the American people from Covid-19, and just very stupidly bungled things, sure, I’d force myself to be fair, and acknowledge Operation Warp Speed was a fine idea… but it’s literally nothing, given the active harm he caused.
