Stacey Abrams launched a campaign for Georgia governor on Wednesday https://t.co/NoY2Bk9MFR

I’m running for Governor because opportunity in our state shouldn’t be determined by zip code, background or access to power. #gapol

Go get ’em, Stacey!
May every penny of the zillions you raise mow down the GOP.
Alison Rose
Hoping Georgia can make the second time a charm!
raven
@Alison Rose: We’ll give it our best shot!
zeecube
Although I am going to regret the zillions of emails I will receive for the next year, made my initial online donation to Stacey.

She has the secret sauce that all Democrats should be cooking with!

Rocket fuel to launch Kemp into the Sun?
Sister Golden Bear
I just wanted to thank Satby again for sharing, in this morning’s Covid thread, the heartbreaking obituary of a trans girl who died from suicide. She was only 19.
Sadly we lose far, far too many of our trans kids. According to a recent study, 52% transgender and nonbinary youth have seriously considered suicide. (Overall 42% of all LGBTQ+ teens have.) Too often they succeed.
As Haley’s obituary aptly put:
We trans elders keep telling our kids that “it gets better,” but with the ever-increasing attacks trans people that are trying to eradicate us — a word I don’t use lightly — from public life, at times it’s hard for the phrase to not ring hollow.
Rest In Peace and Power, Haley.
(Sorry about reposting, one of the disadvantages of being a West Coast jackal who can only check-in sporadically during the day, is frequently I only see things after threads are dead.)
SiubhanDuinne
Just sent Stacey a donation. Not my last, I’m sure!
jonas
@Sister Golden Bear: Both heartwrenching and outrageous. As the parent of a trans teen, I can’t begin to imagine what this family is going through. Unfortunately I think you’re right that things are not going to improve anytime soon. As I posted earlier this morning, the right wing outrage machine has decided that going after trans and non-gender conforming people (along with “CRT”) is going to be their next big grift/culture war mission. Attacking gays and lesbians has lost its mojo, so this is the scapegoat that’s left for them. And they have blood on their hands.
Chief Oshkosh
@raven: It’s going to take a full court press since the media press is already in the tank for Kemp. WSB online gave Abrams a single three-line statement. Kemp got an entire diatribe, seven or eight lines long. Wonder what they’re running on the talking heads boxes in people’s parlors.
Citizen Alan
OT: Well, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that I thought my job interview went really well this afternoon. The bad news is that the job is in Wichita, KA. Which apparently is a deranged hell state where they want to make vax and mask mandates illegal. I mean, it’s not as bad as going back to Mississippi (and I genuinely think I’d rather die), but I can’t believe I’m so reticent about a 6-figure government job.
Kent
GA Governors race is, of course, huge. And this will be hard-fought. But I’m hoping she also has coat tails down to other Federal and State candidates within GA. At least possibly more coat tails than any other possible Dem candidate for Governor that I’m aware of. Turn the whole damn place blue Stacy, as well as keep our two Dem Senators there too.
I’m too far away to know if there are any Congressional races in GA that are possibly going to be close and could use a boost like this.
Chief Oshkosh
@Citizen Alan: KS (not KA – I’m helpful that way) is salvageable. The gov is a Democrat and a she! And Wichita has a river! It’s not Lawrence, but that doesn’t mean you can’t revel in the Free State history, which is historical but also a living history. There’s still many free thinkers there.

@Citizen Alan: If it helps, Wichita itself is Blue in the south and east. But very GQP in the north.
Jeffro
@Chief Oshkosh: EXcellent way to put it! =)
raven
@Kent: With the way these motherfuckers have gerrymandered us I wouldn’t count on it.
Jerry
I just now sent her $10 for two reasons:
HeleninEire
@Sister Golden Bear: Don’t apologize for reposting. This needs to be shared far and wide. I read it at my desk early this morning and I just sat there crying. May Haley rest in peace and may her memory be a blessing.
MJS
@Kent: Seconded. Her presence in the race can only be a boost to Dem turnout overall.
raven
@Kent:
After Georgia Republicans passed a new congressional map today that flips her Democratic suburban district into a Republican one, Rep. Lucy McBath announced she’ll switch to campaign in a neighboring district represented by fellow Georgia Democrat Rep. Carolyn Bourdeuax.
debbie
@SiubhanDuinne:
I hope someone’s taken over her GOTV efforts in her place.
Sister Machine Gun of Quiet Harmony
@Chief Oshkosh: I have to agree that Kansas is somewhat salvageable. They had right-wing loon governance for over a decade and they didn’t like it.
SiubhanDuinne
@debbie:
She had formed a good team. I have no doubt that they’ll continue her work just fine.
Edmund Dantes
@Kent: Warnock should get a huge boost out of this. It’ll be good to have both races playing. Off each other.
SiubhanDuinne
@raven:
Yeah. That one’s rough. They’re both good, and I worked hard for Carolyn in 2018 (she lost, by a sliver) and 2020 (she won). But I greatly admire Lucy, and for sure I would have worked hard for her if I had lived in her district when she ran.
debbie
@SiubhanDuinne:
Good to know, thanks.
Carol
Hopefully this brings out Warnock voters, too.
Geminid
@Citizen Alan: You’ll find nice people in Wichita. And you can do a lot of good, both in your job and outside.
But before you leave New York City, I hope you take a ride on the Staten Island ferry!
Leto
@mrmoshpotato: Kemp is joining the Musk/Bezos dick rocket to the Sun expedition.

@Sister Machine Gun of Quiet Harmony:
I’d forgotten about that asshole Sam Brownback, whose tax cuts ran the state’s finances into the ground.

@Sister Golden Bear:
Thank you for posting that link. My own non-binary, gender-fluid daughter has a trans boyfriend. My daughter is majoring in psychology with a minor in Queer studies. I hope it equips her with knowledge of how to move through this often wretched timescape. I worry for her and her partner.
And a heartfelt hooray for Stacey! She is the kind of person who will make things better for all people… well, maybe not white supremacists, but fuck them anyway.
JPL
@SiubhanDuinne: I don’t think it’s a good idea. There is no doubt that her district will elect a Republican, but the margins are not that big. She could have made it a contest and ran again in two years. just my two cents
Geminid
@SiubhanDuinne: Stacey Abrams will still be involved in getting out the vote. Running for Governor will just kick the project into overdive.
You Georgians really deserve a good Governor, and Abrams will be a great one.
Chief Oshkosh
@West of the Rockies:
Like Biden and most Dems, her policies will make things better for all, even white supremacists. The fact that that will drive them crazy is just a bonus. At least their kids will have a better life.
japa21
@Citizen Alan: Wichita also has a great little zoo and is the home of Friends University. My youngest had considered them an option as they had a zoo management program but couldn’t deal with telling people he went to FU.
Jeffro
Going OT for a second to note that J-Rubs has gone full-on commie wimmin’s lib pinko etc etc etc
Pointing out the Repubs’ endless double-standards and hypocrisy ties all of their insanity together: Dem candidates, take note!
The fundamental deception behind “pro-life

@Leto:
I’m good with that!

@raven: Redistricting in Illinois will result in another contest between two Chicagoland Democratic Representatives. One term Congesswoman Marie Neuman will be taking on two termer Sean Casten. After redistricting, Neuman is now in Chuy Garcia’s district, but she lives only a few blocks out of Casten’s future district, and has decided to run against him instead. They are both talented and capable Representatives, and it’s too bad one will not be in the next Congress.
japa21
@Geminid: But overall, the Dems gain a seat and the GOP loses 2.
UncleEbeneezer
@Sister Golden Bear: I was just reading a heart-breaking story from Minnesota of a family that is moving away after local anti-mask assholes and school board opponents outed their 8 year old Transgender child, publicly. So freakin’ disgusting.
raven
@Geminid: Having been gone from there for 35+ years, was it dems that redistricted?
JMG
As far as political news goes, local news here in Boston didn’t mention Abrams at all, because Gov. Charlie Baker announced he’s not running for a third term. He was the sort of non-Trump, indeed, not social conservative at all, Republican who is the only kind that can win here in Mass. The only announced Republican is a Trumper. He’ll be lucky to get a third of the vote against whoever the Democrat is.
schrodingers_cat
@raven: I just started watching Peaky Blinders, Steeplejack said you were a fan. 4 episodes in so far and loving it.
schrodingers_cat
@JMG: Do you think Healy will run?
Geminid
@raven: Yes, the Democratic majority in Springfield drew a map hostile to Republicans. They created a new district in the Chicago suburbs with an open seat that Neuman could run for. Casten’s new district includes a substantial portion of her old one and she decided to go against him instead. Casten knocked out a Republican (I think Peter Roskam) in 2018. Neuman knocked out Democrat Ted Lipinkski in last year’s primary.
Mike R
Excellent, great news.
raven
@schrodingers_cat: Yea, we ran out of gas on it after a few seasons but it’s good. Have you seen Cillian in The Wind that Shakes the Barley
raven
@Geminid: My family was all DuPage county republicans.
tom
@zeecube: I’ve donated via Act Blue, and to Michigan democrats, and was rewarded with floods of emails from God knows how many left-leaning politicians and orgs. It makes me hesitant to donate more. I will, but I’ll but I’m not looking forward to that flood.
Don’t those orgs realize how much that pisses people off?
debbie
Rooting for injuries:
The last GOP Chair, now running for Portman’s Senate seat, spent millions on 40-some losing school board and other local races in November. Hopefully, someone will want to look into that, too.

Just donated (and became a monthly donor) to her campaign. I’m now up to 4 2022 candidates on my monthly list. They include Beto, Charles Booker in KY, and Trish Gunby who is running to flip MO-2 from red to blue (unlikely atm but it is the district next door to me).
marcopolo
@tom: So, what you do is create a separate gmail account specifically for donating to political campaigns and that is the addy you use when you donate. And then you just ignore all the spamming cause it isn’t the account you use for regular life. My gmail political account gets around ~100 emails/day atm, lol. At one point in 2020 it was around 2x that.
tom
@marcopolo: that is a great idea
tom
@marcopolo: you could extend that concept by using different addys for different orgs and track which org shared your addy with whom.
Geminid
@japa21: So will Illinois be a net loss of two for Republicans, or three?(assuming Congressional races go as anticipated). Now that redistricting has come along, I’m starting to keep score. So far it looks like Oregon will put one in the Democratic column, and Georgia will subtract one. New York and Illinois will each lose seats, but will make two more Republicans walk the plank. It sounds like Colorado’s new seat could go either way. Florida and Texas each gain seats, and have the greatest potential for Republican gains.
Texas Republicans have to be careful, though. They thought they gerrymandered pretty well in 2011, but Colin Allred and Libby Fletcher turned two seats blue in 2018, and several Texas Republicans had close calls last year.
One certainty is that reapportionment will cost Republicans a seat in West Virginia. They will be down to only two next year. In 1960, West Virginia had six! That was the year that Sam Huff, star linebacker for the New York Giants, campaigned in West Virginia with John Kennedy, who I believe won the state. Huff grew in a community called Coal Camp No. 6, and was a three sport star at West Virginia University. He passed away last month.
Geminid
@mrmoshpotato: Damn Lipinksi! I keep getting his and his fathers name mixed up.
Thank you for the correction.
Geminid
@raven: I lived in Lombard for two years in the early 1960’s. I think it was a new housing tract, because there was undeveloped land nearby kids would play on. Then it was on to LA, Dayton Ohio, and Northern Virginia.
Immanentize
@Sister Golden Bear: I love you so.
Immanentize
@HeleninEire: I will be in Galway at the end of June. Buy you a pint?
Immanentize
@Edmund Dantes: This. And it is possible to see Warnock,bat this moment, as more important. But I think the two will create a mad synergy of turnout. Both are State-wide races, so winnable.
mrmoshpotato
@Geminid: I see. Wasn’t sure where you were getting “Ted.”
Another Scott
Excellent. Donated.
The election is Tuesday November 8, 2022. If I’m figuring things right, she would/will take office January 9, 2023 (if, like Kemp, she takes office on the 2nd Monday in January).
Cheers,
Scott.
marcopolo
@Geminid: This thread is probably dead, but from what I have read the IL dems were not as precise as they could have been when drawing the new congressional districts and there is a possibility that if 2022 is a wavish R election (yes, this is possible) that Rs might win 2 of the redrawn D districts. And I think one of those districts would be Lauren Underwoods and maybe the other one Cheri Bustos?
Honestly, we will just have to wait and see how shit plays out.
