Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Republicans do not trust women.

He really is that stupid.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

How stupid are these people?

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Everybody saw this coming.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

I just wanted to thank Satby again for sharing, in this morning’s Covid thread, the heartbreaking obituary of a trans girl who died from suicide. She was only 19.

Sadly we lose far, far too many of our trans kids. According to a recent study, 52% transgender and nonbinary youth have seriously considered suicide. (Overall 42% of all LGBTQ+ teens have.) Too often they succeed.

    As Haley’s obituary aptly put:

She had grown weary of the knowledge of her reality, knowing this country and this world would never stop trying to force her to submit to its ignorance, and her family rages for her. We would’ve burned the whole world down if we’d thought it would keep her safe, and our fury and outrage is eclipsed only by our grief.

We trans elders keep telling our kids that “it gets better,” but with the ever-increasing attacks trans people that are trying to eradicate us — a word I don’t use lightly — from public life, at times it’s hard for the phrase to not ring hollow.

Rest In Peace and Power, Haley.

(Sorry about reposting, one of the disadvantages of being a West Coast jackal who can only check-in sporadically during the day, is frequently I only see things after threads are dead.)

@Sister Golden Bear: Both heartwrenching and outrageous. As the parent of a trans teen, I can’t begin to imagine what this family is going through. Unfortunately I think you’re right that things are not going to improve anytime soon. As I posted earlier this morning, the right wing outrage machine has decided that going after trans and non-gender conforming people (along with “CRT”) is going to be their next big grift/culture war mission. Attacking gays and lesbians has lost its mojo, so this is the scapegoat that’s left for them. And they have blood on their hands.

@raven: It’s going to take a full court press since the media press is already in the tank for Kemp. WSB online gave Abrams a single three-line statement. Kemp got an entire diatribe, seven or eight lines long. Wonder what they’re running on the talking heads boxes in people’s parlors.

OT: Well, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that I thought my job interview went really well this afternoon. The bad news is that the job is in Wichita, KA. Which apparently is a deranged hell state where they want to make vax and mask mandates illegal. I mean, it’s not as bad as going back to Mississippi (and I genuinely think I’d rather die), but I can’t believe I’m so reticent about a 6-figure government job.

GA Governors race is, of course, huge.  And this will be hard-fought.   But I’m hoping she also has coat tails down to other Federal and State candidates within GA.  At least possibly more coat tails than any other possible Dem candidate for Governor that I’m aware of. Turn the whole damn place blue Stacy, as well as keep our two Dem Senators there too.

I’m too far away to know if there are any Congressional races in GA that are possibly going to be close and could use a boost like this.

Going OT for a second to note that J-Rubs has gone full-on commie wimmin’s lib pinko etc etc etc

Pointing out the Repubs’ endless double-standards and hypocrisy ties all of their insanity together: Dem candidates, take note!

    The fundamental deception behind “pro-life

these same voices roundly reject the obligation of self-sacrifice for others’ health when the inconvenience is far more trivial than the emotional, physical and financial burden of a nine-month pregnancy. The “my body, my choice” slogan from anti-mask and anti-vaccine advocates is the most stunning example of their refusal to compel even minor inconveniences to save innocent life. They refuse to apply that same demand for bodily autonomy in the abortion context.

Likewise, the same right-wing advocates for criminalizing abortion reject any slight inconvenience for gun buyers, such as background checks, even if it might save hundreds, if not thousands, of lives. Their Second Amendment rights trump everyone else’s safety. The only ones denied the right of self-determination are pregnant women.

Indeed, in no other context does “innocent life” eviscerate all other liberties and interests. They demand we keep stores open to sustain the economy, even if doing so imperils others. They blithely vote to chop Medicaid funding in the name of fiscal sobriety (even though they are happy to support tax cuts for the wealthy), making lifesaving addiction treatment more difficult to access. And they routinely oppose environmental regulations — economic freedom! — to restrict pollutants that threaten the health and lives of others.

@raven: Redistricting in Illinois will result in another contest between two Chicagoland Democratic Representatives. One term Congesswoman Marie Neuman will be taking on two termer Sean Casten. After redistricting, Neuman is now in Chuy Garcia’s district, but she lives only a few blocks out of Casten’s future district, and has decided to run against him instead. They are both talented and capable Representatives, and it’s too bad one will not be in the next Congress.

As far as political news goes, local news here in Boston didn’t mention Abrams at all, because Gov. Charlie Baker announced he’s not running for a third term. He was the sort of non-Trump, indeed, not social conservative at all, Republican who is the only kind that can win here in Mass. The only announced Republican is a Trumper. @raven: Yes, the Democratic majority in Springfield drew a map hostile to Republicans. They created a new district in the Chicago suburbs with an open seat that Neuman could run for. Casten’s new district includes a substantial portion of her old one and she decided to go against him instead. Casten knocked out a Republican (I think Peter Roskam) in 2018. Neuman knocked out Democrat Ted Lipinkski in last year’s primary.

    Rooting for injuries:

A band of five members of the Ohio Republican Party’s Central Committee filed suit against the Ohio Republican Party, Party Chairman Robert A. Paduchik and Party Treasurer David W. Johnson November 29 at the Franklin County Courthouse petitioning for the court to grant their four requests:

    • An injunction against Paduchik and or a temporary restraining order stopping him from reassigning members of the party’s Central Committee from their subcommittees or otherwise reorganizing the Central Committee outside the process set out in the party rules;
    • Production and recovery of financial documents for a court-ordered forensic audit of the party’s books going back to the party’s fiscal year 2017, or going back as far as necessary to track down impropriety and illegality;
    • Accountability and transparency sufficient to make auditable books and records that the petitioners claim has not been accomplished in 12 years, leaving the party with entirely corrupted and un-audited financial records; and
    • The party’s adoption of the necessary management and officer accountability and an investigation towards the recovery of funds illegally transferred or converted from the party.

    …

“In violation of party bylaws, all five plaintiffs were removed from their respective ORP subcommittee positions by Paduchik in recent months, as a result of retaliation for questioning his failed leadership and financial mismanagement,” according to the lawsuit filing. The suit also asked the court to reinstate the plaintiffs to their subcommittee assignments.

The last GOP Chair, now running for Portman’s Senate seat, spent millions on 40-some losing school board and other local races in November. Hopefully, someone will want to look into that, too.

@japa21: So will Illinois be a net loss of two for Republicans, or three?(assuming Congressional races go as anticipated). Now that redistricting has come along, I’m starting to keep score. So far it looks like Oregon will put one in the Democratic column, and Georgia will subtract one. New York and Illinois will each lose seats, but will make two more Republicans walk the plank. It sounds like Colorado’s new seat could go either way. Florida and Texas each gain seats, and have the greatest potential for Republican gains.

Texas Republicans have to be careful, though. They thought they gerrymandered pretty well in 2011, but Colin Allred and Libby Fletcher turned two seats blue in 2018, and several Texas Republicans had close calls last year.

One certainty is that reapportionment will cost Republicans a seat in West Virginia. They will be down to only two next year. In 1960, West Virginia had six! That was the year that Sam Huff, star linebacker for the New York Giants, campaigned in West Virginia with John Kennedy, who I believe won the state. Huff grew in a community called Coal Camp No. 6, and was a three sport star at West Virginia University. He passed away last month.

Honestly, we will just have to wait and see how shit plays out.
