Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

I was promised a recession.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Second rate reporter says what?

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

… It’s a death cult with an outsized media platform. It’s monsters, and morons, and moronic monsters.

Some commentor recently took objection to the phrase ‘rooting for injuries’, but really — what else can we say?

Hoping there are no fatalities among innocent bystanders when the inevitable shootout starts?

Reminder: Kevin McCarthy publicly ‘joked’ about hitting Speaker Pelosi with her own gavel:

New – Tensions in GOP:
McCarthy tells Mace and Greene to “stop it”
Greene emerges and says she and Trump back primary to Mace.
Mace: “All I can say about Marjorie Taylor Greene is bless her fucking heart.”

"Yeah, I do," Rep. Fred Upton said when asked whether he thought the most recent eruption over Boebert and Greene hurts their chances at taking back the majority. "It's uncalled for."

There are obviously worse things about these videos, but I can't get over how breathlessly excited she gets before delivering the "punchline"—like, she just *knows* this story is going to kill in the room. (And she's right!) https://t.co/hG47zJLGoI

What’s noteworthy is not the speaker but the audience. The applause, the laughing out loud, the person who hoots. There not even that low “oooooh” that you hear when an audience thinks a comedian went too far. https://t.co/q0bBLT61Fb

— Steve Inskeep (@NPRinskeep) December 1, 2021

It's useful to remember that the Omar-Boebert friction is occurring after Greene and Gosar faced sanctions for embracing political violence. https://t.co/nWBjAI4fJg

Not much in the news, but big crypto crash today, still ongoing. Bitcoin down 14% in one day (oops, just dropped another 2% as I was writing this).

Probably you don’t hear about it because crypto news comes from crypto boosters and they’re not boosting *this*.

Edit: holy cow, another 2% during the edit window.

Edit: now down 24%! Holy cow, this is exciting!

I just find it funny that no matter what happens McCarthy will never be Speaker. If they do somehow end up winning, he’s going to be shocked by how many “friends” start gunning for “his” spot. Being Minority leader in the House sucks. Very little power, not a lot you can do to gum up the works like in the senate. All you get to do is herd the cats of your caucus.

McCarthy is dumb enough to think he got minority leader due to his superior political skills and intellect. When the reality is he got it by default. The same won’t be true of Speaker. It takes a different set of skills to keep everyone in line and happy enough to keep you in place.

I’ll always give Nancy credit for how masterful she has done in that role. She understands and gets all the levers and machinations needed to balance it all out. McCarthy has no clue.

Giving firearms to minor children seems to be a thing. There’s a company called Crickett Arms that makes a line of bolt-action rifles for children, with plastic bodies in bright kid-friendly colours. They got flak for the “My first rifle” photo gallery on their website, which they had to take down, but they’re still selling the obscene things. I suppose giving your 15-year-old a 9mm Sig Sauer for Christmas is the logical extension of that.

The way negotiation works is, first you come to a preliminary agreement. It’s not going to be perfect and it’s not going to have everything both parties want, but it’s an agreement, a basis for continuing negotiations. The way both Trump and Biden have handled this, we had something valuable and we not only threw it away, we ruined the basis for further progress. The Iranians (and the Russians, Chinese, and North Koreans) now see that the United States cannot be trusted. There is no point to making concessions, since the Americans will simply come back and demand more without keeping to their side of the agreement. And in this case the Israelis are very much to blame, as are they and the Gulf States in Syria.

Condolences to you. Let her memory be a blessing. And may you be rewarded with another companion when you are ready.

Lets note that Lee Zeldin, fascist congressman from Long Island who is running for Governor of New York is sitting to Boebert’s left and yucking it up while she pukes out hate in the Staten Island video. She was there at his invite. He should be asked about this by every reporter in NY every time he shows his empty fucking head.

@Chetan Murthy: I know, right?  that whole website turned into a Hillary hate center, totally ignoring ALL the insane stuff Trumpy and the GOPers were doing….I quit going there in 2017 because of it.  Haven’t been back since.  Just recently got a fund-raising email from Yves – no thanks.  they lost me years ago…

I am intrigued by the comment of the R Congressman which talks about undermining their efforts. Do we know what “their efforts” entail other than gaining absolute power?

@Amir Khalid: I’m so sorry.  Losing a beloved creature is so hard.  May the good wishes from others here help to ease the sadness.

@evodevo: Oh, yeah. That was it. That was why I abandoned it. I was there for thoughtful financial takes not unhinged politics. I guess they were unaware of who their audience was.

Amir, I wish I could say something to ease the pain, but I know how hard it is for you.

    @mrmoshpotato:

In my experience, bolt action rifles can hold one bullet at a time and of course have to be reloaded after each shot.

That is true of some of them, but most have a small clip/magazine which holds 5 to 10 rounds. So you can slowly work your way through at least a few rounds before you need to reload.

The .22 rifle I learned with at Grandma’s farm had such a 5 round clip, but it was a very old gun, and the clip wasn’t tight, so we used it as a single shot, as it would jam up frequently if you tried to use the clip as it was intended.

Deer rifles almost all have a clip for 3, 4 or 5 rounds.
