I’ve been wide awake since 4 AM for some reason, so I caught the first news accounts when the cops nabbed America’s Worst MAGA Trash ParentsTM overnight. From the coverage, it sounds like the two really had gone on the lam. They were hiding out in an “industrial building” (possibly with the help of a third party) after withdrawing thousands of dollars from an ATM. JFC.
The TV talking heads discussing the case gave the impression that gunowners are alarmed that parents might be held liable when their kids go on a murder rampage. That’s another sign of how our sick gun culture has warped perspectives. Valued commenter Leto pointed to a comment by Biden’s first ATF nominee, David Chipman:
“If a parent provided their car to an unlicensed teen for a night of drunken joy riding, no one would be shocked if a prosecutor sought to hold the adults accountable.”
Exactly. It should be no different with The Precious.
Here’s a story out of India about a mother who doesn’t suck at her parenting job:
A boy snatched by a leopard is lucky to be alive after the animal let go of him when his mother gave chase.
The unnamed child, believed to be around 5 years old, was sitting in his hut with his mother and siblings when the big cat approached, according to local authorities.
The woman, who has been named locally as Kiran Baiga, jumped up and chased the animal while screaming, according to Y P Singh, field director of the Sanjay-Dubri National Park and Tiger Reserve in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
Recounting the episode, which took place on November 30, Singh told CNN: “The lady was sitting in her hut with her children when the leopard came. It took the child and started to run away when the lady chased him, screaming, and more people showed up, so the leopard let go of the child and ran away.”
The boy suffered minor injuries but is now fully recovered, according to Singh.
And she didn’t even need a gun to protect her child. Way to go, mom!

Happy Saturday, y’all.

It’s surprising to me that they didn’t try to cross the border earlier in the day. Of course, if they didn’t have proof of vaccination, that would put a crimp on their plans.
Mimi Haha
Hello. I’m Mimi. I’m not really an insomniac nor an I am early riser. I have a new upstairs neighbor. Nice guy, is beginning to understand how noise carries in the building, but he gets home from work around 4 AM Central and I am used to not hearing anything at all coming from that direction. I just have to get used to having someone up there is all.
mrmoshpotato
As I said to Rina99 in the previous post, Congrats to them on the additional charges that’ll be filed! Oh, also, LOL!
raven
I’ve been up since 4:30. . . GO DAWGS!!!!!!
raven
@mrmoshpotato: That’s exactly what I said when they were whining that they “let them get away”.
satby
@JPL: Ha! That’s probably what happened. They would only go to Detroit to get over the border, and assumed they’d be able to do so easily. MAGAts aren’t really good at paying attention to information originating outside their bubble.
Starfish
@Mimi Haha: Mary Roach books are so much fun. I am sorry about the ne8ghbor thing.
Betty Cracker
@Mimi Haha: I can’t imagine how scary it must have been for the mom and kid. Leopard too, for that matter!
I saw a video clip on Twitter yesterday where a group of adults and children surrounded a very large moose to pet it. Not sure where the clip was filmed, but it was snowy. The moose tolerated the patting for awhile but then started thrashing around and kicked a kid over.
I can’t imagine what they were thinking. I’m a Floridian, and even I know better than to treat a moose like a plush toy!

Morons bolted for the one border where NCIC sharing made crossing impossible. Canucks even drill down to your driving record for DUIs and may block you for DV.
I guess by then they realized that somebody would have to bootleg them across. Dunno how those geniuses thought they’d get to stay there. They’d have been better off heading to Mexico.
Geminid
@mrmoshpotato: The parents also will have to pay a huge amount of bail. That stupid run may keep them in jail until trial.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@satby:
Fleeing was a solid play, if you want a lot of credit for time served awaiting trial. They’d have probably gotten pretrial release and some level of lenience in sentencing (probation or shock probation after a short stay) had they simply reported, and been able to work the entire time. Now? They lose everything – they won’t be tried for several months, their careers lost, their home defaulted.
Betty Cracker
@Geminid: And attempted to leave their child behind to face multiple counts of murder charges as an adult! Alone! That’s what boggles my mind. No one ever nominated me for Mother of the Year, but abandoning a child in trouble that way is unfathomable to me.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@Geminid:

Where are you reading anything about bail?

@Betty Cracker: Well they are together once again.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@Betty Cracker:
There is kind of an age cutoff. Had an old girlfriend call me about her 30 year old who was basically estranged. He’d gotten tangled up in a murder over a drug deal in eastern Kentucky and she was debating whether to pony up the 50K initial payment for some local slack jaw to take it. Would have cleaned her and her husband out.
I told her emphatically “no”, that the 50K was way too cheap, the work would be shoddy and that the rural PDs really are good at handling big stuff like that. Told her to be blunt about it.
She took my advice.

Their balls salted.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@mrmoshpotato:
It isn’t a capital crime, they generally will set a dollar figure. Problem for the Crumbleys is that they are now demonstrated flight risks, so the arraigning authority has that fig leaf to hang a denial of bail on.
Argiope
@Betty Cracker: Just think, in this big wide world, two incredibly horrible, ethically bankrupt and infinitely selfish people found each other, fell in love or whatever it is hateful folks bind themselves together with, and decided to reproduce. That was their first mistake. I’m starting to feel slightly sorry for the kid.
mrmoshpotato
@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes: I interpreted it that bail was still set after they went on the lamb. Hopefully any bail is now revoked.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@mrmoshpotato:
Have I mentioned how county time always sucks? In the prisons, there are programs, libraries, some open space, things to do. In Pretrial confinement in local jails, everything sucks. Bad food, a neverending rotation of addicted/early withdrawal shitheads, lousy guards, “gonna prove myself” late teens/early twenty-somethings, gang bangers, hardassed repeaters – all with nothing to do but sit in dim airless spaces, whine, fight, display dominance and fuck. When I was a PD I had some savvy repeaters that liked doing quick pleas in order to go to the state facilities because the local jail was so awful.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@Argiope:
Mrs Crumbley is stepmom.
Betty Cracker
@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes: Sounds like your friend didn’t abandon her child, even though they’re estranged and he’s 30-something. She sought your advice, and you told her the $50K wouldn’t get appreciably better results.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes:
ETA – I may be wrong about the stepmom part. Have seen some conflicting statements.
Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes
@Betty Cracker: She was pretty torn up about it. There is a grandchild that he and baby mama (also charged) were keeping away from her pretty much since birth because she was too judgmental about their life choices. She is one of those rural oddities – an educated (she was an accountant when we were together) liberal evangelical.
Betty Cracker
@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes: The jailed Ms. Crumbley is the shooter’s bio mom and stepmom to the shooter’s older half brother, who used to live with them but abruptly returned to his bio mom in FL. It wouldn’t surprise me if some lurid tales emerged from that quarter.

What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us
@raven: Late to the thread but I’ve been up since 5 when the fire alarm in our bedroom started the low battery chirp. Because that can’t ever happen in the middle of the day. It always has to start between 2 and 5 AM.
Betty
@Betty Cracker: This whole story makes me feel as if they set this kid up. It was so clear where it was headed. Did they want everyone to know their name? Everyone does now!
Betty Cracker
@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes: Poor thing. I hope it works out as well as it can for her.
A few of my age-peer friends have adult children who are ruining their lives through addiction, and a couple of them have lost kids to overdoses. Loving, involved parents. It’s horrible.
Our generation did lots of drugs, but no one died of it. Different time, different drugs.
Starfish
@Betty Cracker: A few people around my age had to take their AS seriously when they turned 40. There was some local mom trying to hand out test strips so kids could know if their drugs had fentanyl I them. She had seen several kids I their teens and twenties die of drug overdose.
evodevo
@Betty Cracker: Yep. When I was in college in KY, and a few years after, all our crowd was experimenting, but we all turned out to be responsible adults with families and jobs. Heroin was for losers in NYC or somewhere. Now it’s fentanyl or meth, and we have a lost generation here.
SiubhanDuinne
@Betty Cracker:
For the first time, I find myself feeling sorry for the kid. More terrified and despairing than he’s ever been in his life, and then to know that his parents just up and left him to twist in the breeze while they tried to flee the country. He certainly deserves consequences, but I hope at some point he also gets the psychological counselling he sorely needs.
MagdaInBlack
@Betty Cracker: This!. Obviously these are horrible parents, so we should not be surprised they ran and left him but jeezus, even childless me can’t imagine just how horrible you have to be to abandon a child in trouble
Eta: I agree with you regardling : lurid tales. There’s abuse there. That kids face: his eyes are dead.
Horatius
@Betty Cracker: what child? Tamir Rice was 12. By that standard Crumbley Jr. is an adult.
What a country we have here.

The lady is one badarse mom!

The younger Mr Crumbley will need way more than “counseling” — as in lots of medication on top of a good shrink. In reality, he will be medicated heavily enough to make him unable to do anything at all, with Haldol, or Thorazine or some other med for psychosis.

@Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes: Then they will have become economically disadvantaged. That will make them cause celebre for the NY Times when the next column comes out about voting for Trump in 2024.
