New: Inside the private meeting @VP Kamala Harris had w/ Black women leaders Monday:
– Updates on her policy portfolio
– Brainstorming how she can connect more with voters (including Town Halls)
– The women volunteering to share the work she's donehttps://t.co/wtJrGZCOAa— Eugene Daniels (@EugeneDaniels2) December 7, 2021

Our failed punditocracy:
Hillary Clinton used an unsecured device. Kamala Harris uses a secured device. It's concerning either way because a @politico investigation has revealed that both have vaginas. https://t.co/YXZdF6gIbW

Lol bluetooth has been notoriously insecure historically and senior USG officials (like, say, a Senator on SSCI) probably shouldn't be using devices capable of it, certainly not with it enabled in public https://t.co/sxnzXF8izh

But I know we just got done with the guy that was bringing a phone last updated like 8 years ago into a meeting involving classified info he was holding in a public dining room so I can understand why tiger beat on the potomac thinks this is ridiculous

this whole "story" is just the politico goonie boyz not having any good leads to write up. however, as a point of order, the AG of california absolutely should not, under any circumstances, allow a visitor to spend *any* amount of time in their office unsupervised and unattended. https://t.co/9IoMWmK4yo

Btw, it's not only security-minded govt institutions that don't like wireless comms. If you work closely with a big bank, they will audit your work environment and potentially insecure wireless is right there on the checklist. https://t.co/ZboppCYNWT

may all the gods, large and small, old and new, bless Symone Sanders. I hope she’s just taking a break before coming back for ’24

This whole thing gets back to what I think of as the Law of Conservation of Scandals. The beltway media only know how to think about the world in terms of scandals, so every story will be reported that way. Because the number of members of the beltway media is relatively stable, this means we’ll get the same number of scandal stories regardless of the amount of scandalous behavior. When the Democrats are in charge and real scandals are in short supply, stuff like Kamala Harris’s headphone choice will be blown up into a scandal. When the Republicans are in charge and scandalous behavior is everywhere, minor scandals will be ignored because the big ones are so easy to report on.
Soprano2
She can’t win because they want to write snarky stories about her. If it were the opposite, that she used Bluetooth with her phone and let strangers sit in her office, the critique would be about her poor security habits. Also, they would never write a story like that about a man; we know that because they never wrote it about TFG or any of his spawn or staff, and we all know their security habits were atrocious.
Craig
It’s so odd that Alex Thompson gets paid for the drivel that he puts out. What a hack.
Cameron
It’s a shame. I didn’t know much about Kamala Harris before she was elected; but I expected to find out more about her as time passed. Unfortunately, except for the stories referenced at the top here, the only kind of stuff that seems to get reported about her is this mindless, irrelevant garbage.
Leto
@Craig: but the engagement metrics are through the roof! Eyeballs, clicks, and “buzz”. Basically professional shitposter and doing what he’s been paid to do.
MisterForkbeard
@Soprano2: She was my choice in the primary. And I’m glad she dropped out, because although I think she’s really talented there’s a ludicrous amount of terrible coverage about her.
Biden and the Democrats are generally just getting bad coverage. I see lots of things like “Biden just like Trump on X issue, why did we even vote for him” and then it turns out that Biden’s admin went another direction and then their action has been stalled by Trump judges. And even then, I see weird stuff from media about “why didn’t Biden have a plan to bypass these judges who don’t care about the law?” Ugh.
But I digress. I like Harris a lot, but I don’t see a way for her to ever get good media coverage. Democrats get covered very differently than republicans, and Democratic women get much worse coverage than even that.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
The number of people I see who are deeply invested in politics but can’t seem to grasp things like the separation of powers among three co-equal branches, and the nature of federalism, is astounding.
Then again, there are United States Senators who want to pretend these things don’t exist, too.
Soprano2
@MisterForkbeard: I see a lot of that kind of complaining about immigration. They seem to think Biden is a king or dictator who can change things with a snap of his fingers. I do think it’s ridiculous that a judge can make them keep the “remain in Mexico” policy. I thought presidents had more power over immigration policy than that.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Soprano2: Chris Hayes off all people, who can be annoyingly sympathetic to the…. less grounded parts of the left, did a good review of how and why “remain in Mexico” is still in place.
Eolirin
I think what pisses me off the most about this kind of reporting is that it’s trivial to go talk to a cyber security expert and ask for an informed opinion about the topic, which can then be woven into the story to provide context. Not only are they not doing that, it is viewed as being unremarkable that they’re not doing that. We really need to stop treating that as normal.
This is a story about how some anonymous people in her orbit might think that she’s a bit too security minded. It’s not a story about whether she actually is, and all you’d need to do is talk to a cyber security expert to get a good answer on that.
That is to say this isn’t even a story about the substance of the allegation being made, it’s a story about the feelings of some sources.
All of our political reporters are fucking gossip columnists. Given how important what they’re ostensibly supposed to cover is, that’s just untenable.
Ohio Mom
I can sympathize with Anne Laurie’s frustration at being big-footed by Cole but seeing this little big-footed thread makes me feel all is right in the world, the eternal verities continue to be eternal.
I am not surprised the media is dumping on Harris, who couldn’t see that coming? I like her, definitely spent a few weeks wishing she was the nominee, but there’s always been a little voice in my head scared that she could not win after Biden is finished serving because she’s a woman. And in that way, maybe she was a bad choice? Well nothing to do now except move forward. She remains all the good things she is.

@Spanky: I read this about the Apple headphone jack to my millennial son and he laughed. We all agree. My obsolescent iPhone SE still has the jack and I won’t upgrade until nothing in it works!
Eolirin
@Ohio Mom: She doesn’t have to run, and she would still need to win a primary, which she will lose if the rest of the country is also scared of the prospects of trying to elect a black woman. So I think it’s fine.
GregMulka
@Eolirin:
Maybe they did talk to some experts who laughed at them for being an idiot and didn’t want to include the information that would ruin their predetermined narrative.
Eolirin
@GregMulka: What’s the likelihood of them doing actual work?
Ohio Mom
@Eolirin: Oh, I’d definitely vote for Harris for president if she runs when Biden steps down — if I didn’t vote for people I was sure would lose, I’d hardly vote at all. Such is the life of a staunch Democrat.
kindness
With Kamela they are going for the sliming of 10,000 cuts. I mean, they had 20 years to make Hillary a hated person. They see they have 6 years max to do the same thing to Kamela. And our vaulted Village Elders play right into it.
The media, the MSM talking heads, they are all Sally Quinn.
Eolirin
@Ohio Mom: Not trying to imply you wouldn’t. But Harris was frozen out early in the primary because even the people who really liked her didn’t think she’d be able to beat Trump. If that kind of concern still exists having been VP won’t help. That’s part of the point of these kinds of media campaigns. Muddy up the candidate enough that they don’t feel safe to try to run.
But the primary will show if its successful or not. Just being VP won’t clear the field. The primary electorate needs to have faith that the candidate can survive the general. We’ve had pretty good hit rates from Bill Clinton onwards. Even when we’ve lost its been by very little. Everyone’s been competitive. I have faith that will continue. As long as we still have elections that matter that far out anyway.

@frosty:
I refuse to give up my iPhone SE because of the headphone jack. They’ll pry it from my cold clutches…or at least until it’s totally obsolete and can’t run anything.

@mali muso: Are you still able to update the iOS?
The Oracle of Solace
The fact that Democrats can consistently win popular-vote majorities for the Senate and the White House makes me wonder how much better they could do if the political media in this country suddenly decided to favor substance over fluff. Hecc, I’d settle for accuracy instead of balance.

Or you could just use this adapter from Apple. I bought one three years ago. And you could update to a secure phone with better battery life.
”Forget it, Jake. It’s Juicetown.” And no, Bluetooth isn’t secure.
Edmund Dantes
@MisterForkbeard: don’t do this. It’s okay to admit it. Biden is bad on immigration independent of a Judge forcing him to do stuff. They made remain in Mexico expand beyond just Mexico crossers. They also have continued title 42 even though CDC says it’s not needed.
immigrant groups are rightly very annoyed with him with good reason. Don’t belittle their issues.
MisterForkbeard
@Edmund Dantes: I was specifically talking about environmentalism (because of oil leases), but this has happened multiple times to the Biden admin.

My HP printer is desperate for me to go online. I want to plug my computer to my printer with a line. My printer currently says no. Last power outage fried the line. My printer still wants to go from the internet into the cloud to my computer and back before it prints. Sigh. I say NO WAY. So my printer says, meekly, I can’t print.
Probably not a good idea to anthropomorphize electronics. Works well with actual animals. Not so much with equipment.

@Spanky: The new M1 MacBook Pros have a headphone jack. Oh, and a MagSafe power connector. Just sayin’.
I’m typing from one right now (on the vastly improved keyboard from the previous five years). It’s pretty sweet.
