they made an ad in norway where santa is gay and i didn’t know what to expect from it but now i’m crying wtf pic.twitter.com/sAvIRct60H

I was saving this clip for later in the month, but thanks to Rod Dreher the Reichwingers have just discovered it, and their collective hair is so on fire that the replacement Fox Xmas Tree may be danger of incineration.
Also, I want to recommend my favorite wholesome holiday family read-along story, Tove Jansson’s The Fir Tree. The hibernating Moomins are awoken by a disgruntled neighbor, and are alarmed to discover that a mysterious ‘Christmas’ monster is demanding tributes of festive foods, gifts, and a decorated tree…

So Mrs. Claus is Santa’s … beard?

My favorite Christmas story is Hogfather, especially when it’s sending up other Christmas stories. Like the Little Match Girl:
“Sorry, master. But, look, it’s all right, anyway, because she wakes up and it’s all bright and shining and tinkling music and there’s angels, master.”
AH. THEY TURN UP AT THE LAST MINUTE WITH WARM CLOTHES AND A HOT DRINK?
“Er. No. Not exactly at the last minute, master. Not as such.”
WELL?
“More sort of just after the last minute.” Albert coughed nervously.
YOU MEAN AFTER SHE’S—
“Yes. That’s how the story goes, master, ‘s not my fault.”
WHY NOT TURN UP BEFORE? AN ANGEL HAS QUITE A LARGE CARRYING CAPACITY.
“Couldn’t say, master. I suppose people think it’s more… satisfying the other way…” Albert hesitated and then frowned. “You know, now that I come to tell someone…”

@Ken: Hogfather‘s a great favorite of mine (and the BBC mini-series is pretty darned good, if you haven’t seen it!). But the book’s a bit long for reading at the family celebration, by the lighted tree. Also a little sophisticated for preschoolers…
The Fir Tree, on the other hand, is infinitely preferable to the ‘fallback’ Night Before Xmas, and happier than A Xmas Carol. (Also much shorter & with better pictures, if we’re talking small children & others with limited attention spans.)
debbie
Deleted. It turned out not to be happy.

I first saw a link to the gay Santa video when I was catching up on old threads, it was in a comment left by Sister Golden Bear (IIRC).
It is a beautiful little film, I watched it a dozen times. Reminded this old married woman what those first moments of a romance are like — made me so nostalgic! Which is a very traditional feeling I think for this time of year.
Now that another link has appeared, I think I’ll watch it again.

@WaterGirl:
I know. All those photos made it seem like a minute-by-minute news report. I wish there had been a better outcome.

I’m more outraged with Santa outsourcing to the Post Office. Like, he has one job for one day of the year!
Probably shipped the Elfens off to the Uiyghar camps. Socalism will be the end of us.

That was so sweet it made me like christmas again.

@debbie: I thought they saved the woman?

@WaterGirl:
They got to her, but she’d already died. (Long thread, but I should have read further.)

I saw this on Twitter and thought it was so thoroughly Scandinavian, with that “only once a year” melancholy. But also sweetly and slowly romantic.
Also, I didn’t realize Norway had legalized SSM 50 years ago!

I loved Norway’s romantic for Santa film. So emotional for less than 4 minutes!
I also love Hogfather. One of Terry Pratchett’s many triumphs!

The crackpots in the Legislature have all the leverage in this situation, because they control funding. Abbott isn’t going to go against them with a contested primary coming up, because the crackpot voters he needs in order to win eat this shit up like brisket and coleslaw.
It sucks, but it’s rational behavior under the circumstances.

A quick first read of the complaint leads me to believe that Meadows’ suit against the 1/6 Committee is entirely frivolous. Terwilliger should be sanctioned when it is finally dismissed.
Hard to believe that McGuireWoods allowed it to go out over its name and logo.

@Ohio Mom: Yes, it was in a comment by Sister Golden Bear. Wonderful ad.

Great little video. It made me cry too … including the “one day a year” part. And the fifty years part. And the “from all of us to all of us” part. If only.

Julia Donaldson’s Stick-Man is a good Christmas story for ages 2 and up. Lots of great illustrations by Axel Scheffler! (If you’ve got a toddler, or you’re the grandparent of one, and you don’t know who Julia Donaldson is, you need to rectify that now!!)
I’d love that sweet gay Santa clip even if it wasn’t driving all the RWNJs up the wall, but that’s certainly a pleasant bonus! Yeah, Santa doesn’t exist, but he’s straight, white, and male. Riiiiight.

There’s news that Manchin and Tester voted to end the Biden employer vaccine mandate. (While not voting to remove the funding for it in an earlier vote.)
It didn’t have to overcome a filibuster because it was processed under the Congressional Review Act (which cannot be filibustered). It only needed a majority.
It was a performative vote because the House is unlikely to take it up and unlikely to pass it. And Biden has said that he would veto it.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Alison Rose: Target is doing its part. Last week I score the damn near impossible to find Pride nutcracker, and tonight I ran across a rainbow unicorn nutcracker. (Yes, I had to buy it.)
Although I suspect the “regular” nutcrackers are all a little hetero flexible—after all their purpose in life is to have nuts in their mouths.

Ah. My favorites are Fanny and Alexander and The Book of Life.

Hmm, Wikipedia says Finland is still considered part of Scandinavia.
I guess it depends on whether the question is geographical or linguistic. Linguistically, yeah, it’s Uralic along with Estonian, Hungarian, Mari, a bunch of Samoyedic tribal languages in the Russian Arctic, and so on.
But geographically it seems to still be considered part of Scandinavia.

Politically, if Russia were on your border, would you rather be considered in a bloc with Denmark / Sweden / Norway… or with Estonia, Hungary, and Siberia?

I saw Rod Dreher’s outraged post on this – the liberals won’t rest until they make all the children approve of buttsex! They want to make everything awful because they hate us and want to destroy civilization! Then I come here and watch the sweet video with tears in my eyes. How do they make everything dirty and hateful?

I am reading a novel with a character named Lucia. Her father is Scottish worked most of his life in France. His wife s Scottish, maried to him, lived mostly in France. Lucia married a Portuguese guy in her teens and moved to Portugal.
So would she pronounce her name British ” Lusha” or continental ” Lu-see-ah”?
