Auto Draft 57

Here is her 8.5-week portrait. We’ll try for 9.5 this weekend.

Auto Draft 58

So when they said crate training, I’m pretty sure they didn’t mean ON TOP OF THE CRATE.

Trixie at 9 Weeks

After an evening of zoomies and harassing Scout, time for a power nap.

So far she’s been a dream puppy, lulling me into a false sense of confidence. She’s sleeping through the night and asks to go outside for potty. She did have an accident in her crate today – crate training is still stressing her out, so not a surprise.

Funny crate story – this a.m. she was howling at the top of her lungs and it completely upset the ducks, they rushed to the patio door and made about as much noise as she did. But it startled her enough she was quiet long enough I could let her out. Which settled the ducks right down. My critters are weird.

Today she and Scout really made a connection, I’m not sure why, I just keep an eye out to make sure play doesn’t get too rough. Trixie already has a bruised and swollen toe – first, it got shut in a door and then, after it seemed almost healed, she was winding around Scout’s legs and Scout stepped on the SAME toe, because that’s what happens when you’ve banged your toe…

So cute! Thank you so much for the photos and write ups. I can’t even imagine how big a crate must be for a Great Dane.

@MissWimsey: I should video one of our crate training sessions, it might just cure you of that desire. ?

@eclare: Let’s just say, an average size person can easily fit inside the one I own.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Considering Bixby raised the current “flock” they’ve been very tolerant of her. That will change once she gets into her “chase anything that moves” phase. Then we’ll work on duck/dog boundaries.

One can readily pinpoint where the unspoken deep sigh of intemperance fits in that last paragraph.

The team behind the study had two main questions. The first was whether young puppies who had yet to spend any significant time with humans were sensitive to human attempts to communicate. The second was whether there was a genetic basis for the puppies’ social smarts.

In 2017, Bray and her co-authors started testing 375 eight to ten-week-old Labrador and golden retriever puppies from Canine Companions for Independence, an organization that breeds service dogs to support individuals with disabilities or those suffering from post-traumatic stress. Crucially, Canine Companions also keeps extensive information on the pedigree of each dog going back decades, which facilitated the genetic aspect of the study.

At this age, the puppies had spent nearly every minute of the day either with their mom or with their littermates. This made the pups perfect collaborators for trying to get at the question of whether dogs’ feats of social cognition were learned or innate. However, on a more practical level, puppies were not always a dream to work with for the scientists.

“They’re adorable and it’s fun to work with them,” says MacLean. “But they’re puppies, they have short attention spans and they pee and poop on everything. At the start of this project, it was like, ‘Puppies!’ And by the end it was, ‘Puppies.’” Source

    ;)

    Aww, who’s an adorable puppy!

I was chatting with a friend this evening who’s fostering a momma dog and eight puppies for two weeks. (Also very cute.) She said they’re allowed to have dogs in their apartment, but didn’t know if they were allowed to have nine, so it seemed best just to not ask. ?

@NotMax: I hear that! After watching my under-one grandson for six weeks, I had doubts as to whether I am up to raising a Labrador again. Puppies, indeed.

Nevertheless, we are awaiting a litter for a pup sometime in March. Ready or not!
