Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

No one could have predicted…

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

Ron DeSantis, the grand wizard, oops, governor of FL

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

People are complicated. Love is not.

White supremacy is terrorism.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Everybody saw this coming.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

Let there be snark.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

    Here’s Artie’s DNA results

For Artemis we have been able to go further, and identify some of the breeds that we think may have been part of her heritage and have contributed to the Supermutt portion of her genome. We cannot be sure, given how little of their DNA has carried down to Artemis, but we thought you might like to know our best guess anyway!

Likely breeds that contribute to Supermutt:

    • Golden Retriever
    • American Staffordshire Terrier
    • German Shepherd Dog

Knew it was coming, just not when. “When.”

Sacramento County has detected its first two cases of the “very contagious” omicron variant of COVID-19, health officials announced Tuesday. The two cases are still being investigated by the local health office, but do not appear to be linked to each other and neither reported a history of recent travel, county spokeswoman Samantha Mott said in an emailed statement. One of the cases experienced mild symptoms, and the other is asymptomatic with their case identified through weekly testing, according to Mott. “One case is in a vaccinated individual, the other is unvaccinated,” Mott wrote. The omicron variant had previously been identified in the region in Yolo County earlier this month, first detected in a West Sacramento adult.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: I don’t know your situation, but it sounds like a counter-type ordering set-up? When things really started hitting the fan here (early spring 2020) folks at the ice cream store my son manages just couldn’t get it through their heads to stay back from the ordering stations they’d set up. He found that simply putting a table in front of the order station solved the problem. Oh, occasionally a customer would push the table out of the way to get closer, but he would just say, “I’m exposed to a lot of people all day; are you sure you want to do that?” That was almost always all it took.

Anyway, I hear every day how nerve-wracking and annoying thoughtless customers are. I feel your anxiety, believe me.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Just down the road, so to speak, here in Pasadena we have a pretty high vaccination rate (almost 90% of total population with at least one dose, about 84% two or more), and yet our case rate has doubled in less than a week.

On campus, just got an email saying five cases in the last day, which is bonkers high considering that just about all of the undergrads have left for winter break already, along with a lot of grad students and staff. We’re still planning, or perhaps hoping would be a better word, on in-person instruction in January. The contingency planning for going back to remote teaching is underway though.

I’ve probably just lost a good friend. He forwarded some link to an article, the headline of which was highlighting Biden’s “dead agenda.” Out of courtesy I started reading the piece, got to a reference to “Democrats in disarray” (in so many words) in the second paragraph, and lost it. The American Pit Bull Terrier originated in the British Isles and descends from the Mastiff-type dogs introduced to England in antiquity. The breed was brought over to the United States by English immigrants in the 1800s, and quickly became one of the most popular and widespread breeds there.
    FUN FACT
One of the most famous American Pit Bull Terriers is Pal, the dog who played the beloved Petey in The Little Rascals.

I’m on an I phone. When I hit the bottom right corner of the screen, a square box pops up, which when pressed, shows all the multiple screens I have up in window box fashion.

I usually have 2 to 10 screens up at any one time, BJ, CBC, You tube, twitter.

When someone posts a tweet or link, pressing on the link and holding it, gives the option of “opening in a new screen”,

If by accident I wind up “jumping” to the link or tweet, I hit the “back arrow”  < to go back.

Pete is illegally adorable.  I look forward to The Further Adventures of Pete and Badger.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: A better mask couldn’t hurt and might help,  But unless everyone can stay away from people nonstop until February at least – which is near impossible, especially working a “customer service” job like yours – I think we’re all going to catch this fucker.

If you’re fully vaxxed and boosted, you might improve the odds a bit more by taking zinc and extra Vitamin D if you feel anything like symptoms at all.

How is Omicron more transmissible than Delta, FFS?  Does it float in the air longer, stay virulent longer?  Shit.

It’s probably only about 10% of the customers that don’t mask, but that can be enough to spread it around.  One guy walked into the store with his mask on and took it off once in the store…asshole.

I was at Worldcon last weekend, and there have been three reports of positive tests from people who were there, so I just got back from waiting two hours in line for a COVID test at a local community center (Northern Virginia.) I wasn’t expecting to to be quite that long, but I brought my Kindle, so that was okay. I should have realized the line would be outdoors and dressed warmer, though.

I wanted to get a proper test before visiting my parents in Christmas, so it was worth the wait.

Congrats on the adorable pup! It looks like Badger gets to have a roomie to boss around…lol! Have fun with puppyhood!

We are in to Day Two of a surprise addition to our household and there has been face to face hissing with the new kitten. So far Stewie and Morty are being nice to Chuckie, who also happens to be Morty’s nephew. Morty’s sis, Shelby had three kittens on August 16th and we were able to pick one to add to our home. We named him Archie and were excited to have him come home in early October. Unfortunately about a week before he was to come to his new home he was killed in a couch/kid incident that I really did not want to know the details of. We thought that was the end of it.

Two days ago Shelby’s owner (Morty’s sis) called us and asked if we wanted one of the kittens. It seems that the 15 year old girl who got our ‘new’ kitty thinks that he meows too much and wants to find a new home for him. We picked him up two nights ago and our son named him Chuckie because he’s orange and of course, Chuckie Finster. He even came with a runny nose! And a weeping eye, runny poop, fleas… you get it. It’s apparent why he was meowing all of the time, poor guy.

We put him on a good food for kittens (Blue Buffalo), which he pigged out on. I gave him a dose of Revolution for the fleas and they spent yesterday dying and falling off of him. He was going gonzo scratching and they were falling off of him like flaming rats abandoning a burning ship. His poop has firmed up just with the good food and it looks like he is worm free (whew!). Today he’s been ripping around all over the place with nary a worry and oblivious to two pissed off adult cats he now lives with. The face to face with Stewie was something I could have recorded. Stewie was on the steps hissing up at a Chuckie kitty who was descending to a nose to nose greeting. One was hissing and the other was loudly purring. I carefully separated them and praised/treats Stewie for not killing his new roomie.

Morty just had a horrible day at the vet’s office and he’s napping off his shot. All good news but still horrible for the poor guy. He’s a favorite there since he’s a Siamese Scottish Fold and cute to no end, but the attention still scares him.

Back to cat adventures. Enjoy your new puppy adventures, Betty! :)

@Jay: It’s Giant Corporation’s fault that people who are supposed to be focused on carrying orders for pick up are always intercepted and asked for help from customers. There just aren’t enough ACTUAL floor service reps, so we who are wandering around lost home in on anyone wearing the orange.

Can’t tell you how often I’ve been in HD and haven’t seen a single CSR anywhere… or have seen exactly one (1) CSR, surrounded by people like vultures waiting for a deer to die.

Same here.  50% fully vaxxed and maybe 10% masking.  I hate these people.

What’s been infuriating is that my campus is vastly safer than the county around us (we are pretty much centrally located).  Students are hovering around 90% vaxxed, faculty is at 86% and staff at 83% (the Union staff is pulling that number down a bit).  But everyone is fully masked indoors.  An island of sanity amidst the crazies.
