    I don’t know what that mayor is complaining about. DeSantis beat COVID in Florida earlier this year, it was on all the reputable* news outlets. He’s probably taking a well-deserved rest.

    I can confirm service of process was perfected personally upon the former attorney general William Barr this morning at his home in McLean, Virginia. At the time of service, Mr. Barr was wearing shorts and did not appear happy.

    That would seem to be a major breaking news story. Haven’t heard or seen another word about it, though. Anybody know?

Just across the street from Memorial Hall, that same student had helped waterboard him and another VMI freshman inside the barracks as part of an unauthorized initiation ritual, according to two lawsuits, a VMI police report and the transcript of a VMI disciplinary hearing.

    One VMI official testified that the January 2018 incident, though brief, was one of the worst episodes of abuse against a freshman he could remember at the nation’s oldest state-supported military college, where hazing is prohibited by state law and VMI policy.

    The room had been darkened, the feet of the two freshmen were bound with duct tape, and an Islamic call to prayer was played on a speaker to invoke the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandal, the police report and the VMI disciplinary hearing transcript show.

    Waterboarding is designed to simulate the feeling of being drowned and became the subject of heated debate when the CIA used it to interrogate al-Qaeda detainees after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

    Why, the former cadet wondered, did VMI suspend his tormentor and two other upperclassmen instead of expelling them, allowing them to return to school and graduate? And why was the military commissioning any of them as officers, including two cadets who were in the room and did nothing to stop it?

    That honestly makes total sense.  They’re claiming the Democrats were stealing votes.  If they won, it was in spite of the cheating, so their election isn’t in doubt.

    If I lived in Florida, I’d probably vote for Agriculture Commissioner Fried for Governor in the Democratic primary. Nikki Fried seems brash and aggressive, and that may be what it will take to beat DeSantis in November.

    The mayor of Orange County said Gov. Ron DeSantis has been missing in action during the latest wave of COVID-19 as local governments have been forced to figure out how to respond to the omicron variant on their own.

    Maybe this is a shining example of conservative values. Instead of the government telling you what to do, or even trying to help you, it instead abandons you. Personal responsibility, and good luck to any survivors.

    @Cameron: It sounds like you’ll have good choices, and it doesn’t look to be a very destructive primary.

    I know that Republicans won the last three Governor races by 60,000, 66,000, and less than 40,000 votes, so this will probably be a close election too. But I wouldn’t even try to guess the rest. I feel like I can understand a little about politics in Georgia, Ohio, or even Texas, but yours is a singularly complex and unfamiliar state, political terra incognita for me. So all I can say is, Good Luck! DeSantis really needs to be beaten.

    @schrodingers_cat: I see the opposition to vaccine mandates as an area-denial strategy. Being potentially infectious and not caring means you can claim public spaces and dominate them by driving out everyone who does care. The goal is to keep liberals effectively in quarantine (and branded as ridiculous fraidy cats) while conservatives own public space, and if the pandemic lasts forever, they can keep it up forever. It’s basically the same logic as open carry of firearms–make it terrifying to not be them.
