“I mostly lurk here, but it’s been so much fun seeing the photos in this series
that I decided to come out of my shell.”

“In 1949, I was 4 and a budding fashion plate in overalls and a plaid shirt.
Evidently my presents were a dollhouse and a record player.
The cat was named Joe.”

“I’m on the right, and my sister is the baby on the left.
My sister was so wowed by the 2022 calendar that she’s going to check out Balloon Juice and start commenting.”

“This is from my second Christmas.
I think that’s me on the right and my twin brother on the left.
Although it’s hard to tell from this angle.
Note the fence.
Also note we didn’t have any dogs or cats, so draw your own conclusion.”

The entire family often gathered at my grandparents’ glorious old Victorian for Christmas.
PJs and suits were both acceptable.
I am the kid in the front row with the wildly patterned pajamas.

Bonus picture of unfree and siblings just arrived!
“This is from December 1953, my brothers and I, arranged by age. I’m the eldest and the only girl. To me the noteworthy thing about this picture (besides my middle brother’s mohawk) is my youngest brother’s toy. Yes, those are empty thread spools on a shoestring. He actually remembers making those for himself, and he did grow up to be a computer engineer.”
Ditto fence. And is that Encyclopedia Brittanica?
Happy Change Out Your Calendars Day everyone! If I were king, it wouldn’t be above-the-fold page 1, but I would seriously consider making the New Year start March 1 like the pre-Julian-calendar Romans did. Space celebrations out a bit, and more daylight for partying (saying this even though I haven’t celebrated the day for years.)
I have no trouble imagining Frosty 1 and Frosty 2 as being very feisty babies!!!

Joe is very docile. I had basically the same dress as Marsha, Plaid taffeta.

Try as I might, the photographic record of my encounters with Santa remain lost, so count yourselves lucky.
I really enjoyed these, too, so thanks to all who contributed.
My sister is 73. At the very bottom of the cardboard box that brought her giant teddy bear and forever more held the tree hangings, lying undisturbed for decades, are one or two packs of virgin tinsel.
Thanks to Watergirl for organizing this and to those that contributed

@p.a.: Yes that’s the family’s encyclopedia. Pretty sure it was the World Book and not the Brittanica though.
I’m glad you all enjoyed the fence as much as I did. I’m surprised more parents didn’t do the same!

@WaterGirl: How nice of you, and thank you for doing this – and the wonderful calendar, of course! (My parents love theirs!)

This sure brings back some really old dusty memories. Some of the better xmas presents I got were a Lincoln Logs set, an Erector set, a telescope, a chemistry set…. not all at once, these were a ear apart. We had both grandmas, one was next door a couple of hundred yards down the hill, the other was 7 miles out of town on her tiny farm. I don’t know where all the xmas photos went, we don’t appear to have any, so I guess my brother has them.
Thanks everyone for sharing your old photo memories with us~!!~

@p.a.: Yes, my grandparents had a set exactly like that. I think the EB sold the bookcase along with the set. :-). It’s a very good solidly built bookcase – I’ve still got it, although the encyclopedia volumes are long gone.
Boy, it sure was the fashion to put lots of tinsel on the trees in the 40s and 50s!
