"When we were in the dark, he brought light.” A funeral service is underway in South Africa for Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. A plain pine coffin, the cheapest available at his request to avoid ostentatious displays, is at the center of the service. https://t.co/JfnWi5H5NH

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” -Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Desmond Tutu was an icon. A spiritual compass. A champion of the anti-apartheid struggle. But those who saw the Nobel Peace Prize winner up close basked in his rollercoaster laughter and came away infused with the joy and warmth of the man. https://t.co/P2suS1tDZ3

A lesson much of the media and many people frankly should learn.
RIP Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Woke up at 4-something this morning, turned on CNN to make sure we were all still here, and they were carrying Archbishop Tutu’s funeral, live. Contrary to what you might imagine, it was a soothing way to greet a new year. I’m glad I caught some of the service before they cut away.

That was my thought too.

That clip of the Abp and the Dalai Lama is extraordinarily joyful. They both twinkle irrepressibly.

He was right. So was whoever said, “All it takes is for good people to do nothing.”

@SiubhanDuinne:
That’s an amazing piece of video of two giants of the human race, who obviously loved one another, being glad to be together. No hesitation to poke fun at each other, you would think they were close cousins…
One of my cousins is married to a Tibetan woman who is the daughter of a Rinpoche t monk associate of the Dalai Lama — she was Consul to the EU for the Government of Tibet in exile for a while, now retired to HI. She is a pretty down-to-earth person, actually.
ETA: HAPPY NEW YEAR to all the Jackals~!!~

@J R in WV: Hello Dalia! When I saw him speak at Emory he said “I feel as if I am preaching to the choir”!!!

I loved the playfulness evident in his relationship with the Dalai Lama.
Rest In Peace.

This is telling me that I’m not ready for when Tenzin Gyatso* goes.

@Yutsano: I’m with you there. I wonder who the next inspiring and kind people will be.
