Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

In my day, never was longer.

Please don’t feed the bears.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

I really should read my own blog.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Drunk, nicotine-deprived, anti-mask rage-baby picked the wrong flight crew to abuse:

Flight attendant explains what he did to stop the unruly passenger:pic.twitter.com/rUxQY6W89s

— Roshan Rinaldi (@Roshan_Rinaldi) December 31, 2021

The duct tape sound effects were particularly enjoyable. This flight attendant should be on all the planes.

UPDATE: The commentary section of the video is a spoof from a comedian. But there really was a drunk idiot who got duct-taped to his seat.

I don’t know if the commentary part of the video is for real — it seems too good to be true. I want it to be real! But the incident depicted at the beginning did happen on a Florida-bound flight. The guy was duct-taped to his seat, and the flight attendant who taped him up was put on paid leave pending investigation.

He’s a very funny comedian.  His catchphrase “Hold up, wait a minute, something ain’t right” appears in every video. Check him out on youtube as “The Real Spark”

He pretends to be various characters involved with current events, being interviewed by the MSM

His latest was the xmas tree fire:

I think the sad part for me is that if a bunch of liberals were acting like this, all of us would feel the brunt of the criticism.  Being conservative is like Teflon. No one wants to call them out for the behavior their culture spawns.

    Good editorial in today’s NYT:

A healthy, functioning political party faces its electoral losses by assessing what went wrong and redoubling its efforts to appeal to more voters the next time. The Republican Party, like authoritarian movements the world over, has shown itself recently to be incapable of doing this. Party leaders’ rhetoric suggests they see it as the only legitimate governing power and thus portrays anyone else’s victory as the result of fraud — hence the foundational falsehood that spurred the Jan. 6 attack, that Joe Biden didn’t win the election…

Political violence is not an inevitable outcome. Republican leaders could help by being honest with their voters and combating the extremists in their midst. Throughout American history, party leaders, from Abraham Lincoln to Margaret Chase Smith to John McCain, have stood up for the union and democracy first, to their everlasting credit.

Democrats aren’t helpless, either. They hold unified power in Washington, for the last time in what may be a long time. Yet they have so far failed to confront the urgency of this moment — unwilling or unable to take action to protect elections from subversion and sabotage. Blame Senator Joe Manchin or Senator Kyrsten Sinema, but the only thing that matters in the end is whether you get it done. For that reason, Mr. Biden and other leading Democrats should make use of what remaining power they have to end the filibuster for voting rights legislation, even if nothing else.

Whatever happens in Washington, in the months and years to come, Americans of all stripes who value their self-government must mobilize at every level — not simply once every four years but today and tomorrow and the next day — to win elections and help protect the basic functions of democracy. If people who believe in conspiracy theories can win, so can those who live in the reality-based world.

Above all, we should stop underestimating the threat facing the country. Countless times over the past six years, up to and including the events of Jan. 6, Mr. Trump and his allies openly projected their intent to do something outrageous or illegal or destructive. Every time, the common response was that they weren’t serious or that they would never succeed. How many times will we have to be proved wrong before we take it seriously? The sooner we do, the sooner we might hope to salvage a democracy that is in grave danger.

I might quibble with framing the Manchinema problem as a Democrats problem, but the editorial outlines the magnitude of the threat, calls out Republicans for causing it and accurately sums up what needs to happen to address it. This editorial almost makes up for the annual and very tired-ass Maureen Dowd’s Republican brother column takeover.

@Betty Cracker: I don’t follow main stream media much, and op-ed pieces hardly at all. But to the extent that I do I get the impression that the Republican threat to democracy is getting more attention lately. It seems the January 6 Commitee will start public hearings this month, and that may help make the threat more manifest. It sounds like Commitee staff and members are designing the hearings for maximum public impact.

@Geminid: I also get that impression. I mean, if the Beltway media circus wants drama, and we know they do, what could be more dramatic than a deranged cult trying to end American democracy? Looking forward to the 1/6 committee holding public hearings again. Maybe it’ll wake more folks up.

In my neck of Chicagoland (couple miles east of Sox Park, roughly) we got snow at the low end, only 2-3 inches, but internet router is fibrillating as it often does in inclement weather. The wind was pretty high, only quieting down to the usual 10mph in the last hour.

@Jackie: Do you have a “Reader” view in your browser?  Safari does, so you just click that and can read all the text of the article.

I can’t imagine that other browsers don’t have something similar.  In the meantime, the first few paragraphs…

Gov. Ron DeSantis, who’s spent $3 million this year zipping around the state in a $15.5 million plane that’s supposed to be used only for public business, must think Floridians don’t know what campaigning looks like.

But if he’s confused, here are some tips: If there are snappy slogans on the podium instead of a simple, dignified state seal, that looks like campaigning.

If there’s an audience of fans yelling, cheering and waving signs with veiled references to profane catchphrases instead of concerned experts and charts with critical public information, that also looks a lot like campaigning.

If DeSantis is spitting out slogans instead of addressing his duties as this state’s elected leader — it looks like campaigning. Sending out fundraising information closely keyed to the appearance he just made? Looks like campaigning. Spinning fantasies about stolen elections and conspiracy theories involving respected federal health officials? Well … that sounds like lying. Also, sadly, campaigning.

As humorous as the duct tape incident was, it is a shame that the most powerful tool flight attendants have to deal with unruly passengers is a roll of duct tape.  Sad as it is, they need access to restraints to use on passengers when necessary.

I haven’t flown in over 2 decades, but back then things were a lot different.

  30. 30.

    Ruckus

    January 2, 2022 at 2:10 pm

    @JaneE:

I’ve used lots of duct tape in my job over the years and even done poorly, with a modicum of duct tape used, that person is going to be rather securely affixed to that seat, and I imagine they duct taped his mouth as well, to shut him up. Which, with any amount of stubble would be far worse taking it off. And taking it off in any event would be less than an enjoyable bit of his life. Someone like me with a beard? Yeah you don’t want duct tape anywhere near

Also 2 decades ago there were still some flying on planes that made less than friendly skies. Just not as many and just not as much of assholes.
