Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Interesting comments from Roger Stone about Desantis. pic.twitter.com/ZeiBLQYBJ8

— Ron Filipkowski (@RonFilipkowski) January 17, 2022

Weird that a Trump sycophant would taunt one of the boss’s rivals by criticizing his weight, hair, intelligence, honesty and sartorial choices, but as has long been clear, wingnuts just don’t hear themselves.

Never heard of Emerald Robinson. Googled her and she’s a former OAN WH correspondent. Without clicking through to any articles to confirm, from the short summaries it looks like they fired her for Covid conspiracy claims and she’s been hired by Mike Lindell. Yuck.

I’ve lost track of which thread mentioned young voters, but this seems like good news:

JUST IN: New polling suggest 60% of individuals under the age of 29 are voting Democrat.

We are going to build the largest coalition of young voters this country has ever seen and make sure Kevin McCarthy NEVER becomes Speaker this year.

@debbie:  But they gotta show up and historically they don’t. Reposting from downstairs, this is my new tactic in talking with young people about voting:

My new tactic in talking with young people about voting is to tell them their vote has way more potential impact than mine because no one expects them to vote. They don’t show up in polling. If they can get five or ten of their similarly aged friends to vote and those people do the same (and so on) they can shake up races like no one could see coming.

My most recent use of this tactic resulted in lots of wide-eyes and “Really?!” responses. I then had to walk them through how it works and they got kind of excited about it. Young people may not understand their power.

Sooooo…after driving home from a really great trip to Mammoth, my wife and I are both not feeling great.  Mostly just very fatigued with a little runny nose.  Could just be the change in altitude, weather,  exhaustion from so much activity/driving or even seasonal allergies.  But of course, could be the C-word.  Made appointment for PCR tests tomorrow and my boss and am taking off work tonight and tomorrow in case either of us tests +.  We were only inside around others really briefly over the course of the trip.  Always wore N-95 masks and social distanced but some places (Like Mammoth Brewery, when placing our order) had several people without masks so given how crazy contagious Omicron is, wouldn’t be totally surprised.  We are both fully boosted.  Fingers crossed, but too worried knowing how well the vaccines work.  Main thing is finding out my status since I work with kids.  All in all a great trip but it would be hella ironic if we went to Texas and back just fine then caught the ‘Rona in Mammoth.

@The Moar You Know: The story I saw claimed it would put them out of business. Remember – OAN is the one that sprang into existence because AT&T wanted more conservative news options since everything “not Fox” was classified by AT&T executives as “liberal”. Who knows if they’ll survive or not without AT&T’s support, but they’re at least claiming they won’t, and if they don’t have a major cable provider broadcasting their shit and paying them for it, I think it’s reasonable to accept that they’ll go under. There’s plenty of competition out there for conservative shit programming.

@The Moar You Know: I’ve also always remained wary of any particular diagnoses, but it seems clear to me that Dump has brain rot, whether it’s just accelerating stupidity + age or something else. Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture.

Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed.

Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.

A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery.

In terms of a brighter future, note that the only age group that gave TFG a majority, and a small one at that, was the 65+ age group. @Kay: Interesting phenomenon about schools and red states. Remember when Kasich sponsored SB5 I think it was right after he got elected – the bill that was going to destroy public employee unions? All the sides came together to oppose that bill. The cities and the suburbs were united. It was glorious.

Same thing in Kentucky when Bevin got teachers up in arms. Here is link to Time magazine article with the details:

    https://time.com/5719885/matt-bevin-republican-kentucky-teacher-protests/

    An excerpt:

Paula Setser-Kissick was a registered Republican until August 2017, when she asked a question about teachers’ retirement eligibility during a Facebook Live Q&A with Bevin, who lashed out, saying, “If you happen to be a teacher who would walk out on your classroom in order to serve what’s in your own personal best interest at the expense of your children, you probably should retire.”

In response, Setser-Kissick — a digital learning coach for Fayette County Public Schools — registered as a Democrat, ran (unsuccessfully) for a state senate seat on an education-focused platform, and spent the last four months door-knocking for Beshear in Fayette County, where he ultimately won 65% of the vote.

“A lot of people really just see Gov. Bevin as being very abrasive in his style,” says Thomas Matijasic, a history professor at Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg, Ky., and an expert in Kentucky politics. “He really, really insulted a lot of teachers. That might not seem to be a big deal in another state, but I think in Kentucky, where a far lower percentage of people have college degrees, teachers kind of form the core of the middle class, especially in rural areas, and I think there was a really negative impact. Even a lot of teachers who were registered Republicans disliked him.”

Thanks for.the heads-up. I’m not sure how much good four tests among three people will be, but every little bit helps.

Had a long-awaited pulmonologist appointment yesterday. He found a crack in my CPAP machine hose and scolded me for not changing the filthy filter. Housemate took custody of it and by the time a new hose and other fittings arrive it will be immaculate. He also gave me a couple of prescriptions and a bigger set of upper body exercises to do.

Then just now today I have had my closest Covid contact yet. Her patient got into a favorite food and tried to cram down a couple of handfuls while housemate went potty. Poor housemate came back to patient slumped down on the sofa with black foam coming out of her mouth. She called 911 and the patient’s daughter. Then she grabbed a paper towel to swipe out the patient’s mouth, which cleared the airway and got her breathing again, yay!

Unfortunately housemate was just putting mask and gloves back on as she came back, and dropped the mask and one glove to run to help. It didn’t seem too bad as the patient has had Covid twice already, one alpha, one delta and due to good genes and full vaccinations spent a week in hospital the first time and three days the second.

So housemate had the rest of the day off and came home where I was sitting at the dining room table looking for inspiration for the replacement of my front porch the plumbers jackhammered and we spent an enjoyable two or three hours handing phones back and forth across the corner of the table and making fun of people’s tastes.

Then the phone rings and the daughter said the ER cleared the rest of the food out, patient is fine and will be released around 5 p.m. today. However, two tests found her positive for a third round of COVID. She has been fully aware and boosted and has no symptoms. At 97 years old.

So housemate is horrified that she had her hand in the patient’s mouth and has caught or transmitted Omicron to me or any other oldster patients who will want her to work. I feel fairly fatalistic- we were sitting by the wide open back door and had a couple of windows cracked. Housemate has washed her hands many times, including right when she got home.

Nevertheless we have returned to our original strict protocol where we wear masks inside again and stay in our assigned quadrants of the house texting from room to room. Blech.

    @Kathleen:

I was really involved with SB5. It was nice because labor people ran it and they were really disciplined- they wouldn’t let anyone hijack it. The only exception they made is we passed petitions on a voting rights referendum with their referendum. Everyone I asked signed both:

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio lawmakers on Tuesday repealed a controversial election bill that was supposed to go before voters on Nov. 6 — the first known case in Ohio history in which legislators repealed a bill up for referendum.

They were a pleasure to work with.

Stone’s ‘roid problem, it’s a wonder they can communicate at all.

Human growth hormone. It also is said to have the side effect of reducing heart disease risk/probability. Since he interacts with Russians (and others) who sometimes assassinate loose ends and other undesirables with “heart attacks”, making this known is one of his workarounds.

It’s easy to dismiss unions these days because of outsourcing, etc but unions play a huge role in Hamilton County also. One of the first things our Dem County Chair did was have a session with Unions, local activists and other Party stakeholders. They did breakout sessions on goals, etc. Good to see.

But I also really like Gary Cole.  I did not think their could ever be an NCIS without Gibbs, but I think they have done it successfully.

I think he slid right in, really well.  What do you think?  Do you hate the show with Leroy Jethro Gibbs?

I go to sleep at night with my iPad playing older episodes of NCIS, so I still get my fill of Gibbs.

@debbie: Yes! I remember how all the Mainslime Media Pundit Rattis apologized to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and I trust apology tweets to Garland will be every bit as satisfying. NOT.

What I find so unsettling (oh hell everything is unsettling) is that people are pronouncing failure and calling Garland names based on perceived disappointments that they’re anticipating. It’s bizarre.

@WaterGirl: TBH I only watch the reruns so I’ve not seen post Gibbs. It took me awhile to warm up to the characters on NCIS Original Recipe. I also love the characters in NCIS LA & NO and watched both of those shows a long time before I tuned into NCIS. But I hate change. The NCIS franchise mixes characters up too frequently for me.

@Gbbalto: There is video from a deposition that Roger Stone gave in February 2020 that is very striking. He looks odd, with protruding brows. And Stone definitely acts like he’s on some kind of stimulant, gnashing his teeth and raging. The other party in the lawsuit was attorney Larry Klayman, and he was doing the questioning. The deposition ended when Stone snarled “fu*k you” and walked away. It makes for some very creepy YouTube video.

Stones recent belittling of DeSantis seems like an attempt to suck up to Trump. He may want financial assistance. Stone and his wife have over $1.5 million in IRS tax judgements against them, and last week’s Oathkeepers indictments may mean criminal legal trouble for Stone.

@Baud: @japa21:Man, I don’t want to like Nick Sabin. I hate Manchin even more now.

How the F do you think this lifelong Baltimore sports fan feels? If anything I have even less interest in “liking” Paul Tagliabue. The Tagliaboob worked tirelessly for years to deny our city a replacement franchise after the Baltimore Colts slunk out of town toward Indianapolis under cover of dorkness [sic] so his buddy, Washington Ethnic Slurs’ owner Jack Kent Crook [sic], could claim us as part of his fan catchment area and force us to watch Slurs’ games on local TV.**

** After one episode when he maneuvered to reject a superior Baltimore bid for an expansion franchise, Small Paul suggested we take the $$$ raised to build an NFL stadium and spend them on a museum instead – IOW, we weren’t ever getting a franchise. Leaving only the option to steal someone else’s.

Perceptive Browns fans understand that it was the Tagliaboob plus a Mayor and city fatheads [sic] too clever for their own good that lost them [temporarily] their franchise, not the good citizens of Charm City. Unfortunately there seem to be no more than a few dozen of those perceptive folks around.

@SiubhanDuinne: I live in an apartment building and at first I got an error message, but when I clicked on the verify my address button, I found my address with the apartment number directly after the street address and not in the apartment number field so I put it that way and it worked. Then I remembered that I had to do that when I put a hold on my mail when I was out of town and it did work. My mail was held so you might try it that way.
