Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

We still have time to mess this up!

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Adam Schiff on the Midnight in Washington Book Club Zoom (Audio)

This post is in: Adam Schiff Midnight in Washington Book Club, Open Threads

We were so lucky to have Adam Schiff join us at the beginning of our second Midnight in Washington Book Club zoom!

It was wonderful and inspiring.  Almost Retired (Curt) did a masterful job of facilitating the conversation, Athenaze, Argiope and MomSense asked wonderful questions, and Adam Schiff was gracious, candid and thoughtful.  It was a real delight to have him with us and it felt more like a conversation than any of us expected.

By popular demand, here is the audio version of the Adam Schiff portion of our zoom.

There’s no profanity, so you know we were all on our best behavior!  Even a day later, I think a lot of us are still excited from the experience last night.

I learned how to clip audio files today, next up is clipping video files!

So we will likely have the video on Friday.  I have the video clipped to just the 40 minutes with Adam Schiff.  But I am waiting to hear back from our 3 questioners about whether they are okay with the video being posted publicly.

Update on Friday morning:  I have now heard back from everyone, in the affirmative, so I will be putting up a post with the video later.

Still listening. Today I was driven to a stomping rage, again, as I listened, again to Lisa Murkowski’s mealy mouthed excuses for voting first against witnesses, then to acquit.

Kind of shaking my head sadly as I listened to Schiff quote Mitt Romney’s speech explaining his vote to convict and remove. He’s so close to being the man he and his father always thought he would be, even if he fell short of fulfilling the White Horse/Mormon Kennedy prophecy/fantasy.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: He’ll never be the man his father was or the man his father hoped he would be. This is an indictment of inherited wealth and privilege. Nothing more.

a very good point, the twitter-ghost of Nixon agrees

I have never gone along with the whole “Well, Romney loves his wife and has fine grandchildren” garbage. George, for his faults, wasn’t afraid of anybody. Because George came from dirt. If you’re afraid in public life I have no respect for you.

I look forward to listening, as I was unfortunately unable to join. Thanks to all who worked on this project. This place has come a long way.

and as I said earlier, if Schiff’s father in FL is willing and able, they ought to campaign for Val Demmings together.

Thinking of the anecdote when they were walking into Adam’s cousin’s wedding, and Mr Schiff went up to the head of Adam’s security detail and said, “Thank you for protecting my son. I don’t know if you know this, but there are a lot of crazy fuckers out there”

@Gin & Tonic: I almost rephrased that after I hit post comment, but I was sure you would take that in the way that it was intended – not as an order issued but as an invitation to let us know.

As in “you’ll have to come over for dinner when you’re in town next time”.

    Another way of saying please.
