Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

I always assume a red panda pose when a Canada goose presents itself. For some reason, they seem to think I’m bigger than I am.

There is a Canada Geese crossing in my neighborhood. It’s especially busy in the spring when the moms are leading their broods around.

Honking does no good. Neither does slowly moving forward. They can not be intimidated.

The video of Reuters’ best animal photos of the year includes one of a crowd storks? (or stork-like birds) in Israel. Reminds me of learning that during the founding of Israel, when the newcomers were famously draining swamps, they were inadvertently destroying wetlands migrating birds needed.

Question to ponder from most recent dog walk.

Is the thing called a “leash”

    • a device to lead a dog,
    • a device for a dog to lead a human, or
    • a mechanism for dogs and humans to argue about the route?

Speaking of fuzzies, there is news today on furries.

The Co-Chair of the Michigan Republican Party has been spreading a rumor about MPS High School.

“Kids who identify as ‘furries’ get a litter box in the school bathroom,” Maddock posted on her Facebook page the afternoon of Jan. 20. “Parent heroes will TAKE BACK our schools.”

Of course. The Maga Morons bought into this with the gusto heretofore reserved for Horse Paste Dewormer.

The head zookeeper  Superintendent was forced to issue this statement.

“Let me be clear in this communication, there is no truth whatsoever to this false statement/accusation! There have never been litter boxes within MPS schools.”

  66. 66.

    Benw

    January 23, 2022 at 11:33 am

@WaterGirl: leaked everywhere! I think we made our butter layer just a bit too thick, so there was too much in all the layers. I think it was actually good that they leaked, so the croissants actually came out nice and crispy (but still VERY rich). If all that butter had been trapped in the croissants they would’ve been soggy and/or greasy.

I’m a Masshole, and I live a couple miles from that intersection with the goose crossing. There’s a river called the Alewife Brook just off camera to the right, obviously what the geese are heading for.

But the real reason I’m commenting is to name-check the old classic children’s book Make Way for Ducklings, which was set in Boston proper. And there’s a little gift shop on Charles Street that sells copies of that book translated into well over a dozen other languages (the ones most likely spoken by people wealthy enough to come to Boston as tourists, or send their kids to Harvard or MIT).

There are plenty of reasons to wax wroth at the Boston area, like the subway extension that’s now supposed to open this summer, a mere five years past the original plan. But then there’s the geese.

I make the seedling pots out of newspaper with a wooden mold and fill it with “seed starting mix”, any brand. I have two ordinary heating pads. Put them under the trays with the seeding pots, on “low”. When they come up pull them off the heat. I also use a shop light on top of the whole set up- the kind you get at a hardware store. The Kansas state Senate has come up with a Congressional map, but the state House might tweak it. Republicans have enough votes to override a veto by Governor Kelly. The new map leaves 3rd District Representative Sharice Davids with a district that the Senate Majority Leader says she would have won in 2020, but I expect it’s close to a 50-50 district.

The map also moves Lawrence to a more Republican district. I think it’s old district was getting a little bit too purple, so Republicans thought it best  to make Lawrence the eastern end of a district that runs to Colorado.

Webb’s margin of victory was only 9000 votes out of 2.3 million, and since it gave the Dems control of the Senate (nominally, as it turned out: that’s when Mitch became Senate GOP leader, and began requiring 60 votes for everything), I assumed the GOP was going to legally contest the result every which way, and not hand over the seat until they were absolutely forced to. @mrmoshpotato: Miyares is just sucking up to Trump. There were former Trump people working in the Youngkin campaign, and I think they helped broker an agreement: Trump would help Youngkin by staying away, and Youngkin would help Trump once he was elected Governor.

Miyares is doing his part. It looks stupid and petty, but that is starting to look like a theme for the new administration. This is something Trump can appreciate.

@Ilieitz: Oh, yay!  You can find the link to submit to On the Road (OTR) i the sidebar and on any OTR post.

Pro tip:  Write your introduction and anything you want to say about your photos somewhere else, like Microsoft Word, for instance, and then copy it in.

That way if your submission is the 1 in a 100 that hiccups, all you have to do is copy and past and add your photos ago.  Much better than starting from scratch!

@Dorothy A. Winsor: Don’t know if this is true, but funny if it is! ?… according to Raw Story, Trump instructed Michael Cohen to make sure Don Jr. went to jail instead of his precious daughter/wife Ivanka!

I don’t know if it’s true either, but Rudy made it a point to rule her off limits during the Mueller probe, despite the fact that no one else was talking about her at the time.
