Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Republicans in disarray!

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Consistently wrong since 2002

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Monday Evening Open Thread: Peter Doocy Has His Epitaph

At the end of a Biden photo op, when reporters shouted Q's hoping he'd respond, Fox's Peter Doocy asked, "Do you think inflation is a political liability in the midterms?" Biden deadpanned: "It's a great asset—more inflation. What a stupid son of a bitch." pic.twitter.com/Tt4ZVz5Ynj

… and nobody could be more pleased about it than Young Peter, I’m thinking.

A Belarusian hacktivist group says it has launched a limited cyberattack on the national railway company, aimed at impeding the movement of Russian troops and freight inside the Moscow-allied country.

The man is a lickspittle, but the rest of the White House press Corp is barely better.  They whined about not getting a press conference, asked terrible questions that took no effort to create and were intended as gotchas (Ask a policy question?  They are too good for that), and then whined the conference was too long.

Wikipedia says that they do, which isn’t surprising. Changing your rail gauge is a big hassle, so they wouldn’t do it without a very strong reason. FWIW, Wikipedia lists Ukraine as using the same gauge, so it’s unlikely to be an impediment to invasion.

@Roger Moore: FWIW, Wikipedia lists Ukraine as using the same gauge, so it’s unlikely to be an impediment to invasion.

I can vouch for that. In the early 2010s I sat for several hours, starting at 3 AM, in a train at the border crossing between Slovakia and Ukraine while the bogies were being changed. I passed the time trying to decipher the customs declaration I’d been handed, entirely and exclusively in Ukrainian. Prior exposure to the Cyrillic alphabet allowed me to answer one question (no, I was not carrying anything radioactive) by the time the functionaries returned. Eventually I got through to them that they had to find either a translation or a translator if they wanted the rest filled out, and they eventually did. Welcome to the Former Soviet Union, where any language other than Russian is worthless…(And I include Kyiv, where my Ukrainian phrase book was of no value whatsoever.)

    @Mr. Kite:

It’s actually an 85mm difference.  Oddly enough, the original Russian gauge was 5 feet, which was chosen because the engineers were from the Southern USA, where that gauge was in common use.  FWIW, wider gauges are generally better for heavy loading but worse for tight turns.  That’s why mountain railroads often used narrow gauge, and it makes sense that Russia would be happier with a wider gauge than Western Europe.

Of course it’s not real!”

And, because it’s Twitter, the complainer guy was discovered to be a well-to-do stock trader who got a $9,000 PPP loan for working from home. And who previously paid $16 for a burrito somewhere else and thought it was great.

Don’t answer, the peace of mind is worth it. Housemate’s husband was expelled from the house in May after a bad drug thing and moved to Lancaster, which CA jackals can confirm is one of the last places he should’ve gone. He posted some YouTubes of himself shooting school-shooting rifles and screaming about being King of the World.  I would’ve bet after living here five years that he was wholly on “Team Flight,” and never a fighter, but maybe not. Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious disease that can be deadly for babies. Whooping cough can cause uncontrollable, violent coughing, which often makes it hard to breathe. Its “whooping” name comes from the sharp breath intake sound right after a coughing fit. In babies, this disease also can cause life-threatening pauses in breathing with no cough at all. Whooping cough is especially dangerous to babies who are too young to be vaccinated themselves.

Sec. 34-21. – Heads of households to maintain firearms.

    (a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.

    (b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.

In other words, Kennesaw residents were required to own guns … save for those Kennesaw residents who couldn’t afford guns, couldn’t use guns, couldn’t legally own guns, or simply didn’t want to have guns. Essentially, Kennesaw residents were never actually required to own guns, making most assertions about mandatory gun ownership and crime rates in that town highly problematic

I don’t know if they’re “relying” on it, but rail is still really valuable militarily.  It’s the best way of transporting heavy equipment like tanks and artillery any distance- one of the limits on the size of tanks is the dimensions of rail tunnels- and is far more efficient for transporting supplies than trucks.  Trains that had to stop at a border because of a difference in rail gauge would be sitting ducks for an air strike.

Pretty much every country hauls a lot of freight around in trains. Moving arms, soldiers, tanks, etc. is just another category of freight railroads and trains can be used for.

Smallpox hasn’t come back in 40 years, since it was eradicated. People born 45-50 years* ago and younger have not gotten a smallpox vaccine.

Seriously, what smallpox and polio (nearly eradicated) show is mass vaccinations can eliminate transmissible diseases. They are success cases in the power of universal vaccinations to eliminate diseases.

I know people love sarcasm on the internet, but measles and whooping cough have had resent outbreaks. Smallpox not so much.

Saw Stevie Ray years ago, Lonnie Mack opened for him and tore the place up and down. The show was awesome, a small hall with about 3,000 folks cheering for more music.

Way more recently saw Buddy Guy on his 82nd birthday tour, he came down off the stage and ripped a long solo standing in the aisle righ beside me!!! His roadies were beside him every step up ond side of the hall and down the other side. What a great performer and person Buddy Guy is. Have seen him 3 times right here in town.

They’ll “do their own research”. The vaccine wanes so you’re supposed to get a booster- therefore that means it “doesn’t work”. What’s the distinction?

if you have a basement with the hot water heater in The basement, one can do passive recirculating hot water with just a run of pipe and a valve.

Hot water rises to the top, ( if it can), cold water sinks to the bottom, (if it can),

No need for pumps if the layout is correct.

    @Starboard Tack:

if the heater is at the bottom of the circuit, you put a tee connection at the cold water supply for the heater. Above the tee you put a one way flow valve in, so that the house water can enter from the plumbing, but the cold water feed cannot backflow into the house hold plumbing. You then connect the lowest part of the hot water circuit to the tee.

no need for a pump, hot water as it cools flows into the heater where convection currents connect “the loop”.

With the right layout, it’s all passive.

Wrong layout, you need a recirculating pump.

It hurts that Clapton is a covidiot. I’ve loved his music. But the reality is he hasn’t been relevant as a recording artist for roughly 20 years. So while it’s a shame that he’s making some of his last years an utter embarrassment, I find him easy to ignore now.
